Dam impacts on the Changjiang (Yangtze) River sediment discharge to the sea: The past 55 years and after the Three Gorges Dam

    Get PDF
In 5 recent years ( 2000 - 2004), the Changjiang ( Yangtze) River has discharged past Datong (600 km from the river mouth) an average of similar to 250 million tons (mt) of sediment per year, a decrease of more than 40% since the 1950s and 1960s, whereas water discharge at Datong has increased slightly. Water and sediment discharge data from the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the river suggest that the reduction of the Changjiang sediment load has occurred in two phases between 1950 and 2002: following the closure of the Danjiangkou Reservoir on the Hanjiang tributary in1968 and following the installation of numerous dams and water-soil conservation works in the Jialingjijang catchment after1985. As the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) started operating in 2003, the Changjiang entered a third phase of sediment reduction with annual sediment loads at Datong less than 200 mt/yr. Upon completion of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) in 2009, the sediment load at Datong will decrease to similar to 210 mt/yr for the first 20 years, then will recover to similar to 230 mt/yr during 2030 - 2060, and will reach similar to 310 mt/yr during 2060 - 2110. From the sediment budget and sediment erosion data for the Changjiang subaqueous delta, it can be assumed that the delta will be eroded extensively during the first five decades after TGD operation and then will approach a balance during the next five decades as sediment discharging from TGD again increases

Determining the Shear Relaxation Modulus and Constitutive Models for Polyurea and Polyurea-Based Composite Materials from Dynamic Mechanical Testing Data

Polyurea and polyurea-based composite materials are widely used due to their excellent mechanical properties. In order to facilitate large-scale computational studies for this group of materials, a robust and standard method is needed to extract their viscoelastic constitutive parameters. In this study, frequency-domain master curves which cover a wide range of frequencies are developed using the data of dynamic mechanical analysis through time-temperature superposition (TTS). The quality of the master curves is assessed both by Kramers-Kronig relations and by comparing with the ultrasonic wave testing data. Then the time-domain relaxation modulus is obtained by the high-resolution Prony series approximated from the relaxation spectrum. To reduce computational cost, 4 to 8-term Prony series are then fitted from the time-domain relaxation modulus for a limited frequency range of interest. Both the high and low-resolution Prony series are converted back to frequency domain to compare with the master curves developed by TTS and show good agreements. This method is not limited to polyurea and polyurea-based composites and it can be applied to other similar polymer systems as well

Complete chloroplast genome sequence of Holoparasite Cistanche Deserticola (Orobanchaceae) reveals gene loss and horizontal gene transfer from Its host Haloxylon Ammodendron (Chenopodiaceae)

The central function of chloroplasts is to carry out photosynthesis, and its gene content and structure are highly conserved across land plants. Parasitic plants, which have reduced photosynthetic ability, suffer gene losses from the chloroplast (cp) genome accompanied by the relaxation of selective constraints. Compared with the rapid rise in the number of cp genome sequences of photosynthetic organisms, there are limited data sets from parasitic plants. The authors report the complete sequence of the cp genome of Cistanche deserticola, a holoparasitic desert species belonging to the family Orobanchaceae

The dosimetric effects of limited elective nodal irradiation in volumetric modulated arc therapy treatment planning for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer

Objective—Contemporary radiotherapy guidelines for locally advanced non-small cell lung carcinoma (LA-NSCLC) recommend omitting elective nodal irradiation, despite the fact that evidence supporting this came primarily from older reports assessing comprehensive nodal coverage using 3D conformal techniques. Herein, we evaluated the dosimetric implications of the addition of limited elective nodal irradiation (LENI) to standard involved field irradiation (IFI) using volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) planning. Method—Target volumes and organs-at-risk (OARs) were delineated on CT simulation images of 20 patients with LA-NSCLC. Two VMAT plans (IFI and LENI) were generated for each patient. Involved sites were treated to 60 Gy in 30 fractions for both IFI and LENI plans. Adjacent uninvolved nodal regions, considered high risk based on the primary tumor site and extent of nodal involvement, were treated to 51 Gy in 30 fractions in LENI plans using a simultaneous integrated boost approach. Results—All planning objectives for PTVs and OARs were achieved for both IFI and LENI plans. LENI resulted in significantly higher esophagus Dmean (15.3 vs. 22.5 Gy, p \u3c 0.01), spinal cord Dmax (34.9 vs. 42.4 Gy, p = 0.02) and lung Dmean (13.5 vs. 15.9 Gy, p = 0.02), V20 (23.0 vs. 27.9%, p = 0.03), and V5 (52.6 vs. 59.4%, p = 0.02). No differences were observed in heart parameters. On average, only 32.2% of the high-risk nodal volume received an incidental dose of 51 Gy when untargeted in IFI plans. Conclusion—The addition of LENI to VMAT plans for LA-NSCLC is feasible, with only modestly increased doses to OARs and marginal expected increase in associated toxicity

Functional Evolution of Duplicated Odorant-Binding Protein Genes, Obp57d and Obp57e, in Drosophila

Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) are extracellular proteins found in insect chemosensilla, where they participate in the sensing of odors, tastes, and pheromones. Although a large number of OBP genes have been identified in insect genomes, their molecular functions and biological roles have been clarified in limited cases. Two OBP genes, Obp57d and Obp57e, were involved in the evolution of host-plant preference in Drosophila sechellia. Comparative analyses of the Obp57d/e genomic sequences from 27 closely related species suggested that the two genes arose by tandem gene duplication and functionally diverged from each other. In this study, the functional evolution of Obp57d and Obp57e was examined by in vitro binding assays using recombinant proteins synthesized in a bacterial system. Compared to the ancestral Dpse\OBP57de, Dmel\OBP57d was more specialized to tridecanoic acid while Dmel\OBP57e was generalized regarding their binding affinity, suggesting that the two OBP genes underwent subfunctionalization and neofunctionalization. A behavioral analysis using knockout flies supported that the biological role is different between OBP57d and OBP57e in vivo. Site-directed mutagenesis of the evolutionarily conserved amino acids revealed that these residues play an important role in protein folding. These findings provide a clue to understanding how the repertoire of OBP genes is maintained in a genome under natural selection

Identification and genome characterization of genotype B and genotype C bovine parainfluenza type 3 viruses isolated in the United States

BACKGROUND: Bovine parainfluenza 3 viruses (BPI3V) are respiratory pathogens of cattle that cause disease singly but are often associated with bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) in conjunction with other viral and bacterial agents. Bovine vaccines currently contain BPI3V to provide protection against the virus, but there is no current information regarding the BPI3V strains that are circulating in the U.S. RESULTS: A project was initiated to sequence archival BPI3V isolates to study viral evolution over time. This was done with a deep sequencing protocol that generated sequences of multiple RNA virus genomes simultaneously. Analysis of the BPI3V sequences revealed that, in addition to the genotype A (BPI3Va) viruses previously described in the United States, there were two additional genotypes of BPI3V circulating that had been described only in Australia (BPI3Vb) and Asia (BPI3Vc). The U.S. BPI3Vb and BPI3Vc isolates showed some divergence from the Australian and Asian strains; the BPI3Vb were 93 % similar to the Australian Q5592 strain and the BPI3Vc viruses were 98 % similar to the 12Q061 strain that was described in South Korea. Overall, the three genotypes were 82 to 84 % identical to each other and 80 % identical to the most similar human PI3V. Cross-neutralization studies using an APHIS/NVSL BPI3V reference serum showed that neutralization titers against the genotype B and C viruses were 4- to ≥16-fold less then the titer against the APHIS BPI3Va reference strain, SF-4. CONCLUSIONS: This study clearly demonstrated that BPI3Vb and BPI3Vc strains, previously thought to be foreign to the U.S., are indeed circulating in domestic livestock herds. Based on virus neutralization using polyclonal antisera, there were antigenic differences between viruses from these genotypes and the BPI3Va viruses that are included in currently marketed bovine vaccines. Further study of these viruses is warranted to determine pathogenic potential and cross-protection afforded by vaccination

Conserved Odorant-Binding Proteins from Aphids and Eavesdropping Predators

Background: The sesquiterpene (E)-ß-farnesene is the main component of the alarm pheromone system of various aphid species studied to date, including the English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae. Aphid natural enemies, such as the marmalade hoverfly Episyrphus balteatus and the multicolored Asian lady beetle Harmonia axyridis, eavesdrop on aphid chemical communication and utilize (E)-ß-farnesene as a kairomone to localize their immediate or offspring preys. These aphidpredator systems are important models to study how the olfactory systems of distant insect taxa process the same chemical signal. We postulated that odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), which are highly expressed in insect olfactory tissues and involved in the first step of odorant reception, have conserved regions involved in binding (E)-ß-farnesene. Methodology: We cloned OBP genes from the English grain aphid and two major predators of this aphid species. We then expressed these proteins and compare their binding affinities to the alarm pheromone/kairomone. By using a fluorescence reporter, we tested binding of (E)-ß-farnesene and other electrophysiologically and behaviorally active compounds, including a green leaf volatile attractant. Conclusion: We found that OBPs from disparate taxa of aphids and their predators are highly conserved proteins, with apparently no orthologue genes in other insect species. Properly folded, recombinant proteins from the English grain aphid, SaveOBP3, and the marmalade hoverfly, EbalOBP3, specifically bind (E)-ß-farnesene with apparent high affinity. For the firs

AFM, SEM and TEM Studies on Porous Anodic Alumina

    Get PDF
Porous anodic alumina (PAA) has been intensively studied in past decade due to its applications for fabricating nanostructured materials. Since PAA’s pore diameter, thickness and shape vary too much, a systematical study on the methods of morphology characterization is meaningful and essential for its proper development and utilization. In this paper, we present detailed AFM, SEM and TEM studies on PAA and its evolvements with abundant microstructures, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The sample preparation, testing skills and morphology analysis are discussed, especially on the differentiation during characterizing complex cross-sections and ultrasmall nanopores. The versatility of PAAs is also demonstrated by the diversity of PAAs’ microstructure

Oil prices and stock returns : nonlinear links across sectors

    Get PDF
We present evidence of an asymmetric relationship between oil prices and stock returns. The two regime multivariate Markov switching vector autoregressive (MSVAR) model allow us to capture the state shifts in the relationship between regional stock markets and sectors. Results suggest that oil price risk is significantly priced in the sample used. The impact is asymmetric with respect to market phases, and regimes have been associated with world economic, social and political events. Our study also suggests asymmetric responses of sector stock returns to oil price changes and different transmission impacts depending on the sector analyzed. There is a high causality from oil to sectors like Industrials and Oil & Gas. Companies inside the Utilities sector were more able to hedge against oil price increases between 2007 and 2012. Historical crisis events between 1992–1998 and 2003–2007 do not seem to have affected the relationship between oil and sector stock returns, given the higher probability of remaining smoother. For all sectors there seems to be a turn back to stability from 2012 onwards. Finally, investors gain more through portfolio diversification benefits built across, rather than within sectors.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
