Degenerate Topological Vortex solutions from a generalized Abelian Higgs Model with a Chern-Simons term
We consider a generalization of the abelian Higgs model with a Chern-Simons
term by modifying two terms of the usual Lagrangian. We multiply a dielectric
function with the Maxwell kinetic energy term and incorporate nonminimal
interaction by considering generalized covariant derivative. We show that for a
particular choice of the dielectric function this model admits topological
vortices satisfying Bogomol'nyi bound for which the magnetic flux is not
quantized even though the energy is quantized. Furthermore, the vortex solution

Abatement of particulate-laden SO2 in tapered bubble column with internals
The performance of particulate-laden SO2 scrubbing in a modified tapered bubble column with internals is reported in this article. The presence of particles improved the particulate-laden SO2 removal efficiency to about 15% that was elucidated by the facilitated adsorptive mass transport. Experimentation revealed that nearly 100% removal efficiency of particulate-laden SO2 was achievable without any additives or pretreatment under certain operating condition of the scrubber. An empirical correlation was developed to predict the performance of the modified tapered scrubber. Experimental values fitted excellently well with the predicted values through the correlation (within ±5% deviation). The performance of the modified tapered bubble scrubber with column internals has been found to be better than a tapered bubble column without any internals
Collective T- and P- Odd Electromagnetic Moments in Nuclei with Octupole Deformations
Parity and time invariance violating forces produce collective P- and T- odd
moments in nuclei with static octupole deformation. Collective Schiff moment,
electric octupole and dipole and also magnetic quadrupole appear due to the
mixing of rotational levels of opposite parity and can exceed single-particle
moments by more than a factor of 100. This enhancement is due to two factors,
the collective nature of the intrinsic moments and the small energy separation
between members of parity doublets. The above moments induce T- and P- odd
effects in atoms and molecules. Experiments with such systems may improve
substantially the limits on time reversal violation.Comment: 9 pages, Revte
Dynamic Modelling of Nickel Complexation in Xylem Sap of Quercus ilex: A Voltammetric Study
Holm oak (Quercus ilex) is the dominant tree growing on serpentine soils of northeast Portugal, characterized by elevated soil concentrations of Ni and Mg, combined with low Ca concentrations. Apparently Q. ilex does not suffer from excessive concentrations of Ni in the soil. In this work we report a complexation study of nickel by the relevant ligands present in xylem sap: histidine, aspartic acid, oxalic and citric acids, at 0.10Â M ionic strength and pHÂ 5.5. Single and mixed complexes were characterized. To validate the proposed complexation model, diluted solutions of Q. ilex xylem sap were titrated with nickel. All studies were done using square-wave voltammetry (SWV) at a hanging mercury drop electrode. Due to the dynamic nature of SWV, it is possible to obtain the conditional stability constants of the complexes formed but also to have knowledge on the kinetics of the interconversion of the species present
Enhanced T-odd P-odd Electromagnetic Moments in Reflection Asymmetric Nuclei
Collective P- and T- odd moments produced by parity and time invariance
violating forces in reflection asymmetric nuclei are considered. The enhanced
collective Schiff, electric dipole and octupole moments appear due to the
mixing of rotational levels of opposite parity. These moments can exceed
single-particle moments by more than two orders of magnitude. The enhancement
is due to the collective nature of the intrinsic moments and the small energy
separation between members of parity doublets. In turn these nuclear moments
induce enhanced T- and P- odd effects in atoms and molecules. First a simple
estimate is given and then a detailed theoretical treatment of the collective
T-, P- odd electric moments in reflection asymmetric, odd-mass nuclei is
presented and various corrections evaluated. Calculations are performed for
octupole deformed long-lived odd-mass isotopes of Rn, Fr, Ra, Ac and Pa and the
corresponding atoms. Experiments with such atoms may improve substantially the
limits on time reversal violation.Comment: 28 pages, Revte
