    Quantity versus Quality: The Impact of Environmental Disclosures on the reputations of UK plcs

    The theoretical framework of this paper integrates quality-signalling theory and the resource based view of the firm to test the differential effects of the quantity and quality of environmental disclosures on the firm’s environmental reputation. Uniquely, the study uses a quality-adjusted method of content analysis, so that sentences are not merely counted but also weighted to reflect their likely significance. Investments in research and development and diversification, as potential methods of enhancing of environmental reputation, are also considered. In doing so the paper complements and extends the work of Toms (2002). The results confirm the framework and models tested in the original paper on more recent data and also suggest that quality of environmental disclosure rather than mere quantity has a stronger effect on the creation of environmental reputation amongst executive and investor stakeholder groups.     L-functions with large analytic rank and abelian varieties with large algebraic rank over function fields

    The goal of this paper is to explain how a simple but apparently new fact of linear algebra together with the cohomological interpretation of L-functions allows one to produce many examples of L-functions over function fields vanishing to high order at the center point of their functional equation. The main application is that for every prime p and every integer g>0 there are absolutely simple abelian varieties of dimension g over Fp(t) for which the BSD conjecture holds and which have arbitrarily large rank.Comment: To appear in Inventiones Mathematica

    A 25,000 years climate record from the East African equator: Half-precessional climate forcing and the history of temperature and hydrological change

    Particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, high-resolution climate records have demonstrated major variability in the hydrological cycle at orbital, millennial and sub-millennial time scales in the last 25,000 years. Geographical patterns of past climate change (from the equator to both poles, and among continents and ocean basins at similar latitude) at these various time scales hold the key to understanding the climate-dynamical processes governing them, and to resolution of longstanding questions about the relative importance of tropical and high-latitude climate dynamics in translating external climate-forcing mechanisms into regional climate variability. Currently, dynamical analysis of past tropical climate variability is being hampered by the fragmentary or poorly dated nature of available records from key continental regions, debate to what extent marine records are representative for climate history on the continents, and uncertainty about whether traditional isotopic tracers applied to tropical continental records mainly reflect temperature or hydrological change. What has been missing is a continuous, high-resolution climate record from the tropics that adequately separates the evolution of temperature and hydrological change, and covers the period from the Last Glacial Maximum until the present with sufficient age control to establish supra-regional phase relationships in past climate anomalies at millennial and century time scales.In this context, the EuroCLIMATE project CHALLACEA here presents a reconstruction of climate history on the East African equator, based on multiple proxy-indicator analyses in the sediment record of a permanently stratified crater lake (Lake Challa, a 4.2 km2, 92 m deep crater lake on the lower East slope of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania) with stable physical limnology and sedimentation dynamics over the past 25,000 years. This has resulted in a unique combination of high temporal resolution, excellent radiometric (210Pb, 14C) age control, and confidence that the recording parameters of the climatic proxies (i.e. the relationship between climate change and its proxy signals extracted from the sediment record) have remained constant through time. The equatorial (3° S) location of our study site in East Africa, where seasonal migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone spans the widest latitude range, provides unique information on how varying rainfall contributions from the Indian Ocean monsoons have shaped the region’s climate history. The detailed reconstruction of the temperature and moisture-balance history of equatorial East Africa from before the Last Glacial Maximum to the present uniquely weaves together tropical climate variability at orbital, millennial and century time scales. The temporal pattern of reconstructed climate changes bears the clear signature of half-precessional insolation forcing of tropical monsoon dynamics on the East African equator, modified by high southern latitude influence on the timing of post-glacial temperature rise, and by high northern latitude influence on tropical hydrological variability at millennial and century time scales

    Galois sections for abelianized fundamental groups

    Given a smooth projective curve XX of genus at least 2 over a number field kk, Grothendieck's Section Conjecture predicts that the canonical projection from the \'etale fundamental group of XX onto the absolute Galois group of kk has a section if and only if the curve has a rational point. We show that there exist curves where the above map has a section over each completion of kk but not over kk. In the appendix Victor Flynn gives explicit examples in genus 2. Our result is a consequence of a more general investigation of the existence of sections for the projection of the \'etale fundamental group `with abelianized geometric part' onto the Galois group. We give a criterion for the existence of sections in arbitrary dimension and over arbitrary perfect fields, and then study the case of curves over local and global fields more closely.     Mirrored one-nucleon knockout reactions to the T-z = +/- 3/2 A=53 mirror nuclei

    Background: The study of excited states in mirror nuclei allows us to extract information on charge-dependent (i.e., isospin-nonconserving) interactions in nuclei. Purpose: To extend previous studies of mirror nuclei in the f72 region, investigating charge symmetry breaking of the strong nuclear force. Methods: γ-ray spectroscopy has been performed for the mirror (Tz=±32) pair Ni53 and Mn53, produced via mirrored one-nucleon knockout reactions. Results: Several new transitions have been identified in Ni53 from which a new level scheme has been constructed. Cross sections for knockout have been analyzed and compared with reaction model calculations where evidence is found for knockout from high-spin isomeric states. Mirror energy differences between isobaric analog states have been computed, compared to large scale shell-model calculations, and interpreted in terms of isospin-nonconserving effects. In addition, lifetimes for the long-lived Jπ=52−1 analog states in both Mn53 and Ni53 have been extracted through lineshape analysis, giving half-lives of t12=120(14) ps and t12=198(12) ps, respectively. Conclusions: The inclusion of a set of isovector isospin-nonconserving matrix elements to the shell-model calculations gave the best agreement with the experimental data

    Particle-Like Description in Quintessential Cosmology

    Assuming equation of state for quintessential matter: p=w(z)ρp=w(z)\rho, we analyse dynamical behaviour of the scale factor in FRW cosmologies. It is shown that its dynamics is formally equivalent to that of a classical particle under the action of 1D potential V(a)V(a). It is shown that Hamiltonian method can be easily implemented to obtain a classification of all cosmological solutions in the phase space as well as in the configurational space. Examples taken from modern cosmology illustrate the effectiveness of the presented approach. Advantages of representing dynamics as a 1D Hamiltonian flow, in the analysis of acceleration and horizon problems, are presented.
