    AbstractA HT 29 cell line derived from human colonic carcinoma was shown to express the intrinsic factor receptor, with about 5000 binding sites per cell and an association constant of 20 × 109 1/mol at pH 7.4 and 4°C. The number of binding sites increased dramatically between 7 and 10 days of culture time. Endocytosis of the intrinsic factor-cobalamin-receptor complex was inhibited by two ways: at 4°C and at 37°C by incubating the cells with vinblastine, monensin and chloroquine. The plasma membrane receptor was cross-linked to [57Co]cobalamin-intrinsic factor and solubilized with Triton X-100. The cross-linked complex had a relative molecular mass of 330 kDa in native PAGE

    Radio Observations of the January 20, 2005 X-Class Event

    We present a multi-frequency and multi-instrument study of the 20 January 2005 event. We focus mainly on the complex radio signatures and their association with the active phenomena taking place: flares, CMEs, particle acceleration and magnetic restructuring. As a variety of energetic particle accelerators and sources of radio bursts are present, in the flare-ejecta combination, we investigate their relative importance in the progress of this event. The dynamic spectra of {Artemis-IV-Wind/Waves-Hiras with 2000 MHz-20 kHz frequency coverage, were used to track the evolution of the event from the low corona to the interplanetary space; these were supplemented with SXR, HXR and gamma-ray recordings. The observations were compared with the expected radio signatures and energetic-particle populations envisaged by the {Standard Flare--CME model and the reconnection outflow termination shock model. A proper combination of these mechanisms seems to provide an adequate model for the interpretation of the observational data.Comment: Accepted for publication in Solar Physic

    Dense cores are the simplest star-forming sites that we know, but despite their simplicity, they still hold a number of mysteries that limit our understanding of how solar-type stars form. ALMA promises to revolutionize our knowledge of every stage in the life of a core, from the pre-stellar phase to the final disruption by the newly born star.     Energy Flow in the Hadronic Final State of Diffractive and Non-Diffractive Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    An investigation of the hadronic final state in diffractive and non--diffractive deep--inelastic electron--proton scattering at HERA is presented, where diffractive data are selected experimentally by demanding a large gap in pseudo --rapidity around the proton remnant direction. The transverse energy flow in the hadronic final state is evaluated using a set of estimators which quantify topological properties. Using available Monte Carlo QCD calculations, it is demonstrated that the final state in diffractive DIS exhibits the features expected if the interaction is interpreted as the scattering of an electron off a current quark with associated effects of perturbative QCD. A model in which deep--inelastic diffraction is taken to be the exchange of a pomeron with partonic structure is found to reproduce the measurements well. Models for deep--inelastic epep scattering, in which a sizeable diffractive contribution is present because of non--perturbative effects in the production of the hadronic final state, reproduce the general tendencies of the data but in all give a worse description.Comment: 22 pages, latex, 6 Figures appended as uuencoded fil

    A measurement of the proton structure function F ⁣2(x,Q2)F_{\!2}(x,Q^2) is reported for momentum transfer squared Q2Q^2 between 4.5 GeV2GeV^2 and 1600 GeV2GeV^2 and for Bjorken xx between 1.81041.8\cdot10^{-4} and 0.13 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1993. It is observed that F ⁣2F_{\!2} increases significantly with decreasing xx, confirming our previous measurement made with one tenth of the data available in this analysis. The Q2Q^2 dependence is approximately logarithmic over the full kinematic range covered. The subsample of deep inelastic events with a large pseudo-rapidity gap in the hadronic energy flow close to the proton remnant is used to measure the "diffractive" contribution to F ⁣2F_{\!2}.Comment: 32 pages, ps, appended as compressed, uuencoded fil
