    Enhancing Central Nervous System Remyelination in Multiple Sclerosis

    Recent studies on adult neural stem cells and the developmental biology of myelination have generated the expectation that neural precursors can repair the damaged central nervous system of multiple sclerosis patients where the endogenous remyelination process has failed. As a result, many laboratories are engaged in translational studies in which the goal is to design ways to promote remyelination and repair. Here we raise issues highlighted by prior experimental and human work that should be considered lest these studies become “lost in translation.

    Study of decagonal approximant and γ-brass-type compounds in Al-Cr-Fe thin films

    This paper reports the preparation conditions and structure characteristics of Al-Cr-Fe very thin films (10-30 nm) obtained by the flash evaporation technique. The films are either amorphous or crystallized, depending on the thickness of the sample and temperature of the substrate. Annealing of amorphous films leads to crystallization of intermetallic phases that are all linked with quasicrystals. In particular, we have identified by transmission electron microscopy the following structures: body-centered-cubic (bcc) γ-brass phase, monoclinic λ-Al13(Cr,Fe)4 phase, and orthorhombic O1-phase, all of them already observed in this system, together with four new structures, i.e., a face-centered-cubic (fcc) γ-brass phase (superstructure of the bcc phase), monoclinic λ′-phase (related to the λ-phase) and two orthorhombic phases (1/1/; 1/1) and (1/0; 2/1) approximants of the decagonal phase). In this study, we point out the occurrence of twin defects of the λ-Al13(Cr,Fe)4 phase. Films prepared directly in the crystalline state comprise the O1 approximant. Electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements show that all films are not oxidized except for the presence of a native oxide layer that forms in ambient atmosphere with a thickness that cannot exceed 0.3 nm. Optical properties were investigated and show that films need to be large enough (>30 nm) to reproduce the properties of bulk alloys. Finally, contact angle wetting measurements reveal that the presence of such films on a substrate, even at very low thickness, considerably decreases the wetting behavior by wate

    Bipolar querying of valid-time intervals subject to uncertainty

    Databases model parts of reality by containing data representing properties of real-world objects or concepts. Often, some of these properties are time-related. Thus, databases often contain data representing time-related information. However, as they may be produced by humans, such data or information may contain imperfections like uncertainties. An important purpose of databases is to allow their data to be queried, to allow access to the information these data represent. Users may do this using queries, in which they describe their preferences concerning the data they are (not) interested in. Because users may have both positive and negative such preferences, they may want to query databases in a bipolar way. Such preferences may also have a temporal nature, but, traditionally, temporal query conditions are handled specifically. In this paper, a novel technique is presented to query a valid-time relation containing uncertain valid-time data in a bipolar way, which allows the query to have a single bipolar temporal query condition

    AMBER on the VLTI: data processing and calibration issues

    We present here the current performances of the AMBER / VLTI instrument for standard use and compare these with the offered modes of the instrument. We show that the instrument is able to reach its specified precision only for medium and high spectral resolution modes, differential observables and bright objects. For absolute observables, the current achievable accuracy is strongly limited by the vibrations of the Unit Telescopes, and also by the observing procedure which does not take into account the night-long transfer function monitoring. For low-resolution mode, the current limitation is more in the data reduction side, since several effects negligible at medium spectral resolution are not taken into account in the current pipeline. Finally, for faint objects (SNR around 1 per spectral channel), electromagnetic interferences in the VLTI interferometric laboratory with the detector electronics prevents currently to get unbiased measurements. Ideas are under study to correct in the data processing side this effect, but a hardware fix should be investigated seriously since it limits seriously the effective limiting magnitude of the instrument.Comment: 10 page

    Using level-2 fuzzy sets to combine uncertainty and imprecision in fuzzy regions

    In many applications, spatial data need to be considered but are prone to uncertainty or imprecision. A fuzzy region - a fuzzy set over a two dimensional domain - allows the representation of such imperfect spatial data. In the original model, points of the fuzzy region where treated independently, making it impossible to model regions where groups of points should be considered as one basic element or subregion. A first extension overcame this, but required points within a group to have the same membership grade. In this contribution, we will extend this further, allowing a fuzzy region to contain subregions in which not all points have the same membership grades. The concept can be used as an underlying model in spatial applications, e.g. websites showing maps and requiring representation of imprecise features or websites with routing functions needing to handle concepts as walking distance or closeby

    Generalized Classical BRST Cohomology and Reduction of Poisson Manifolds

    In this paper, we formulate a generalization of the classical BRST construction which applies to the case of the reduction of a poisson manifold by a submanifold. In the case of symplectic reduction, our procedure generalizes the usual classical BRST construction which only applies to symplectic reduction of a symplectic manifold by a coisotropic submanifold, \ie\ the case of reducible ``first class'' constraints. In particular, our procedure yields a method to deal with ``second-class'' constraints. We construct the BRST complex and compute its cohomology. BRST cohomology vanishes for negative dimension and is isomorphic as a poisson algebra to the algebra of smooth functions on the reduced poisson manifold in zero dimension. We then show that in the general case of reduction of poisson manifolds, BRST cohomology cannot be identified with the cohomology of vertical differential forms.Comment: 3

    Phosphorus budget and phosphorus availability in soils under organic and conventional farming

    The aim of this work was to assess to which extent organic farming practices would affect the accumulation of total and available phosphorus (P) in a cropped soil in comparison to conventional practices. In order to achieve this, soil samples were taken from a long-term field trial comparing a non-fertilised control (NON), two conventionally cultivated treatments (MIN, CON), and two organically cultivated treatments (ORG, DYN). Soil samples were taken from each treatment at two depths (0-20 and 30-50 cm) before starting the field trial (1977) and at the end of every three crop rotations (1984, 1991 and 1998). They were then analysed for total P (Pt), total inorganic P (Pi), total organic P (Po) and isotopically exchangeable Pi. After 21 years, the average P input-output budget reached -20.9 kg P ha−1 a−1 for NON, -7.8 for DYN, -5.7 for ORG, -5.0 for MIN and +3.8 for CON. Total P, Pi as well as the amount of Pi isotopically exchangeable within 1 minute (E1) were positively correlated to the P budget. Comparison between P budget and Pt in the top- and subsoils of the fertilised treatments suggested a net transfer of P from the 0-20 to the 30-50 cm layers between 13 and 26 kg P ha−1 a−1during the first rotation and between 3 and 12 kg P ha−1 a−1during the second rotation. During the third rotation a net upward movement of P from the subsurface to the topsoil ranging between 3.7 and 10.5 kg P ha−1 a−1was estimated. In the topsoil, E1decreased from an initial value of 12 mg P kg−1 to 11 in CON, 8 in MIN, 6 in ORG, 5 in DYN and 2 in NON after 21 years. In the subsoil, E1 increased from an initial value of 2 mg P kg−1 to 4 in MIN, ORG, DYN and NON and to 6 in CON. These results show that, with the exception of NON, all treatments had still an adequate level of available P after 21 years of trial and that, in this low to moderately P sorbing soil, an equilibrated input-output budget allows to maintain P availability at a constant level. In the organic systems, yields have so far partly been attained at the expense of soil reserves or residual P from earlier fertiliser application
