Correlation between Risk Aversion and Wealth distribution
Different models of capital exchange among economic agents have been proposed
recently trying to explain the emergence of Pareto's wealth power law
distribution. One important factor to be considered is the existence of risk
aversion. In this paper we study a model where agents posses different levels
of risk aversion, going from uniform to a random distribution. In all cases the
risk aversion level for a given agent is constant during the simulation. While
for a uniform and constant risk aversion the system self-organizes in a
distribution that goes from an unfair ``one takes all'' distribution to a
Gaussian one, a random risk aversion can produce distributions going from
exponential to log-normal and power-law. Besides, interesting correlations
between wealth and risk aversion are found.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physica A, Proceedings of the VIII

Association Of Bartonella Species With Wild And Synanthropic Rodents In Different Brazilian Biomes
Bartonella spp. comprise an ecologically successful group of microorganisms that infect erythrocytes and have adapted to different hosts, which include a wide range of mammals, besides humans. Rodents are reservoirs of about two-thirds of Bartonella spp. described to date; and some of them have been implicated as causative agents of human diseases. In our study, we performed molecular and phylogenetic analyses of Bartonella spp. infecting wild rodents from five different Brazilian biomes. In order to characterize the genetic diversity of Bartonella spp., we performed a robust analysis based on three target genes, followed by sequencing, Bayesian inference, and maximum likelihood analysis. Bartonella spp. were detected in 25.6% (117/457) of rodent spleen samples analyzed, and this occurrence varied among different biomes. The diversity analysis of gltA sequences showed the presence of 15 different haplotypes. Analysis of the phylogenetic relationship of gltA sequences performed by Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood showed that the Bartonella species detected in rodents from Brazil was closely related to the phylogenetic group A detected in other cricetid rodents from North America, probably constituting only one species. Last, the Bartonella species genogroup identified in the present study formed a monophyletic group that included Bartonella samples from seven different rodent species distributed in three distinct biomes. In conclusion, our study showed that the occurrence of Bartonella bacteria in rodents is much more frequent and widespread than previously recognized. © 2016, American Society for Microbiology. Non-linear QCD dynamics and exclusive production in collisions
The exclusive processes in electron-proton () interactions are an
important tool to investigate the QCD dynamics at high energies as they are in
general driven by the gluon content of proton which is strongly subject to
parton saturation effects. In this paper we compute the cross sections for the
exclusive vector meson production as well as the deeply virtual Compton
scattering (DVCS) relying on the color dipole approach and considering the
numerical solution of the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation including running
coupling corrections. We show that the small- evolution given by this
evolution equation is able to describe the DESY-HERA data and is relevant for
the physics of the exclusive observables in future electron-proton colliders
and in photoproduction processes to be measured in coherent interactions at the
LHC.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Non-linear QCD dynamics in two-photon interactions at high energies
Perturbative QCD predicts that the growth of the gluon density at high
energies should saturate, forming a Color Glass Condensate (CGC), which is
described in mean field approximation by the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation.
In this paper we study the interactions at high energies and
estimate the main observables which will be probed at future linear colliders
using the color dipole picture. We discuss in detail the dipole - dipole cross
section and propose a new relation between this quantity and the dipole
scattering amplitude. The total ,
cross-sections and the real photon structure function are
calculated using the recent solution of the BK equation with running coupling
constant and the predictions are compared with those obtained using
phenomenological models for the dipole-dipole cross section and scattering
amplitude. We demonstrate that these models are able to describe the LEP data
at high energies, but predict a very different behavior for the observables at
higher energies. Therefore we conclude that the study of
interactions can be useful to constrain the QCD dynamics.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. Version to be published in European Physical

Movements of hatchery-reared dusky groupers released in a Northeast Atlantic Coastal Marine Protected Area.
No-take areas are key instruments to promote the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), particularly concerning the protection of endangered species such as the dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus). However, despite the establishment of no-take areas and the prohibition of catching this species in a southwestern Portuguese MPA (SACVMP—‘Sudoeste Alentejano’ and ‘Costa Vicentina’ Marine Park) since 2011, there is still no evidence of population recovery. By using acoustic biotelemetry, this work aimed to evaluate the feasibility of restocking hatchery-reared adult dusky groupers in two no-take areas within the SACVMP. In 2019 and 2021, thirty groupers were tagged with acoustic transmitters and the site attachment and movements of the groupers were assessed in the releasing sites (no-take areas). None of the tagged fish settled down in either of the areas, leaving the no-take areas mainly at dusk and night. Some individuals displayed extended movements of more than a hundred kilometers along the Portuguese coast which was rarely reported for this species. At least in some coastal stretches, those movements were performed close to the shore, which may evidence the importance of coastal MPAs to protect and promote the connectivity of species more associated with rocky reef habitats. Following studies should focus on the conditions that promote site attachment and fidelity by hatchery-reared dusky groupers so that future large-scale restocking programs can be successful in MPAs with appropriate habitats
Ten-year follow-up of clinical governance implementation in primary care : Improving screening, diagnosis and control of cardiovascular risk factors
Altres ajuts: CAM was awarded a predoctoral scholarship from the Fundació Institut Universitari per a la Recerca a l'Atenció Primària de Salut Jordi Gol i Gurina (IDIAPJGol) (http: //www.idiapjordigol.com/index.php/ca/) (7Z06/003).protective effect of having a cardiovascular event (hazard ratio (HR) = 0.64, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.44-0.94) or death (HR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.35-0.88) was observed in patients from centres where general practitioners received high frequency feedback. Additionally, these PCCs presented improved cardiovascular health indicators and lower incidence and mortality by CVD, illustrating the impact of this intervention. Current improvement strategies for the control of cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) in Europe are based on quality management policies. With the aim of understanding the effect of interventions delivered by primary healthcare systems, we evaluated the impact of clinical governance on cardiovascular health after ten years of implementation in Catalonia. A cohort study that included 1878 patients was conducted in 19 primary care centres (PCCs). Audits that comprised 13 cardiovascular health indicators were performed and general practitioners received periodic (annual, biannual or monthly) feedback about their clinical practice. We evaluated improvement in screening, diagnosis and control of the main CRFs and the effects of the feedback on cardiovascular risk (CR), incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality, comparing baseline data with data at the end of the study (after a 10-year follow-up). The impact of the intervention was assessed globally and with respect to feedback frequency. General improvement was observed in screening, percentage of diagnoses and control of CRFs. At the end of the study, few clinically significant differences in CRFs were observed between groups. However, the reduction in CR was greater in the group receiving high frequency feedback, specifically in relation to smoking and control of diabetes and cholesterol (Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and High Density Lipoprotein (HDL)). Assessment of rubber tree panels under crowns resistant to South American leaf blight
The objective of this work was to assess the performance of panel clones under crowns resistant to South American leaf blight (Microcyclus ulei). The experiment was carried out with 18 panel clones crown-budded with Hevea pauciflora x H. guianensis, in a Xanthic Ferralsol (Oxisol) in Manaus, AM, Brazil. The following parameters were evaluated: dry rubber yield, plant nutritional status, and anatomical and physiological characteristics of the latex vessels. In the first three years of evaluation, the panel clones IAN 2878, IAN 2903, CNS AM 7905, CNS AM 7905 P1, and PB 28/59 showed the highest dry rubber yield potential, while the clones IAN 6158, IAN 6590, and IAN 6515 should not be recommended for crown budding. Higher potassium and copper foliar content in panel clones were associated to an increase in dry rubber yield. The simultaneous evaluation of anatomical and physiological characteristics of latex is fundamental for the selection of panel clones in the Amazon region. Crown budding is an efficient technology for South American leaf blight management in endemic regions
