b-coloring is NP-hard on co-bipartite graphs and polytime solvable on tree-cographs
A b-coloring of a graph is a proper coloring such that every color class
contains a vertex that is adjacent to all other color classes. The b-chromatic
number of a graph G, denoted by \chi_b(G), is the maximum number t such that G
admits a b-coloring with t colors. A graph G is called b-continuous if it
admits a b-coloring with t colors, for every t = \chi(G),\ldots,\chi_b(G), and
b-monotonic if \chi_b(H_1) \geq \chi_b(H_2) for every induced subgraph H_1 of
G, and every induced subgraph H_2 of H_1.
We investigate the b-chromatic number of graphs with stability number two.
These are exactly the complements of triangle-free graphs, thus including all
complements of bipartite graphs. The main results of this work are the
following:
- We characterize the b-colorings of a graph with stability number two in
terms of matchings with no augmenting paths of length one or three. We derive
that graphs with stability number two are b-continuous and b-monotonic.
- We prove that it is NP-complete to decide whether the b-chromatic number of
co-bipartite graph is at most a given threshold.
- We describe a polynomial time dynamic programming algorithm to compute the
b-chromatic number of co-trees.
- Extending several previous results, we show that there is a polynomial time
dynamic programming algorithm for computing the b-chromatic number of
tree-cographs. Moreover, we show that tree-cographs are b-continuous and
b-monotonic
A comparison of A-level performance in economics and business studies: how much more difficult is economics?
This paper uses ALIS data to compare academic performance in two subjects often viewed as relatively close substitutes for one another at A-level. The important role of GCSE achievement is confirmed for both subjects. There is evidence of strong gender effects and variation in outcomes across Examination Boards. A counterfactual exercise suggests that if the sample of Business Studies candidates had studied Economics nearly 40% of those who obtained a grade C or better in the former subject would not have done so in the latter. The opposite exercise uggests that 12% more Economics candidates would have achieved a grade C or better if they had taken Business Studies. In order to render a Business Studies A-level grade comparable to an Economics one in terms of relative difficulty, we estimate that a downward adjustment of 1.5 UCAS points should be applied to the former subject. This adjustment is lower than that suggested by correction factors based on conventional subject pair analysis for these two subjects
Topological Interactions in Warped Extra Dimensions
Topological interactions will be generated in theories with compact extra
dimensions where fermionic chiral zero modes have different localizations. This
is the case in many warped extra dimension models where the right-handed top
quark is typically localized away from the left-handed one. Using
deconstruction techniques, we study the topological interactions in these
models. These interactions appear as trilinear and quadrilinear gauge boson
couplings in low energy effective theories with three or more sites, as well as
in the continuum limit. We derive the form of these interactions for various
cases, including examples of Abelian, non-Abelian and product gauge groups of
phenomenological interest. The topological interactions provide a window into
the more fundamental aspects of these theories and could result in unique
signatures at the Large Hadron Collider, some of which we explore.Comment: 40 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables; modifications in the KK parity

Provenance analysis for instagram photos
As a feasible device fingerprint, sensor pattern noise (SPN) has been proven to be effective in the provenance analysis of digital images. However, with the rise of social media, millions of images are being uploaded to and shared through social media sites every day. An image downloaded from social networks may have gone through a series of unknown image manipulations. Consequently, the trustworthiness of SPN has been challenged in the provenance analysis of the images downloaded from social media platforms. In this paper, we intend to investigate the effects of the pre-defined Instagram images filters on the SPN-based image provenance analysis. We identify two groups of filters that affect the SPN in quite different ways, with Group I consisting of the filters that severely attenuate the SPN and Group II consisting of the filters that well preserve the SPN in the images. We further propose a CNN-based classifier to perform filter-oriented image categorization, aiming to exclude the images manipulated by the filters in Group I and thus improve the reliability of the SPN-based provenance analysis. The results on about 20, 000 images and 18 filters are very promising, with an accuracy higher than 96% in differentiating the filters in Group I and Group II
Exploring the Photophysical Properties of Molecular Systems Using Excited State Accelerated ab Initio Molecular Dynamics.
In the present work, we employ excited state accelerated ab initio molecular dynamics (A-AIMD) to efficiently study the excited state energy landscape and photophysical topology of a variety of molecular systems. In particular, we focus on two important challenges for the modeling of excited electronic states: (i) the identification and characterization of conical intersections and crossing seams, in order to predict different and often competing radiationless decay mechanisms, and (ii) the description of the solvent effect on the absorption and emission spectra of chemical species in solution. In particular, using as examples the Schiff bases formaldimine and salicylidenaniline, we show that A-AIMD can be readily employed to explore the conformational space around crossing seams in molecular systems with very different photochemistry. Using acetone in water as an example, we demonstrate that the enhanced configurational space sampling may be used to accurately and efficiently describe both the prominent features and line-shapes of absorption and emission spectra

Evidence for clonal selection of gamma/delta T cells in response to a human pathogen.
T cells bearing gamma/delta antigen receptors comprise a resident population of intraepithelial lymphocytes in organs such as skin, gut, and lungs, where they are strategically located to contribute to the initial defense against infection. An important unsolved question about antigen-driven gamma/delta T cell responses regards the breadth of their T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire, since many specific epithelial compartments in mice display limited diversity. We have examined the diversity of TCR delta gene expression among human gamma/delta T cells from skin lesions induced by intradermal challenge with Mycobacterium leprae. We show that the vast majority of gamma/delta cells from M. leprae lesions use either V delta 1-J delta 1 or V delta 2-J delta 1 gene rearrangements and, within a given region of the lesion, display limited junctional diversity. This contrasts markedly with the extensive diversity of gamma/delta T cells from peripheral blood of these same individuals, as well as skin from normal donors. These results indicate that the gamma/delta response to M. leprae involves the selection of a limited number of clones from among a diverse repertoire, probably in response to specific mycobacterial and/or host antigens
