Psychiatrists should investigate their patients less
Psychiatrists often order investigations such as blood tests, neuroimaging and electroencephalograms for their patients. Rationales include ruling out 'organic' causes of psychiatric presentations, providing baseline parameters before starting psychotropic medications, and screening for general cardiometabolic health. Hospital protocols often recommend an extensive panel of blood tests on admission to a psychiatric ward. In this Against the Stream article, we argue that many of these investigations are at best useless and at worst harmful: the yield of positive findings that change clinical management is extremely low; special investigations are a poor substitute for a targeted history and examination; and incidental findings may cause anxiety and further unwarranted investigation. Cognitive and cultural reasons why over-investigation continues are discussed. We conclude by encouraging a more targeted approach guided by a thorough bedside clinical assessment
Suppression of electron spin decoherence of the diamond NV center by a transverse magnetic field
We demonstrate that the spin decoherence of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in
diamond can be suppressed by a transverse magnetic field if the electron spin
bath is the primary decoherence source. The NV spin coherence, created in "a
decoherence-free subspace" is protected by the transverse component of the
zero-field splitting, increasing the spin-coherence time about twofold. The
decoherence due to the electron spin bath is also suppressed at magnetic fields
stronger than ~25 gauss when applied parallel to the NV symmetry axis. Our
method can be used to extend the spin-coherence time of similar spin systems
for applications in quantum computing, field sensing, and other metrologies.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure
NESTING ACTIVITY BUDGETS AND ANTIPREDATOR BEHAVIORS OF MISSISSIPPI SANDHILL CRANES
We studied activity budgets and antipredator behaviors of Mississippi sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis pulla) to determine if parental behavior influenced nest outcomes. We used infrared motion-activated cameras to capture behavioral sequences from 21 nests over a 2-year period. Overall activity budgets were similar among crane pairs regardless of nest outcome. Specific activity patterns did predict nest outcomes; pairs at unsuccessful nests spent more time away from the nest and more time manipulating nest contents than successful pairs, while pairs at nests that were lost to predation cooperated poorly and started the nest a month later on average than successful nests. Wild-reared birds gave more agonistic displays toward potential threats than captive-reared birds, but both wild- and captive-reared birds successfully defended nests from potential predators. The results suggest that behavior patterns of nesting pairs can be used to predict likely nest outcome, and that birds differ in their ability to defend nests from predators. We suggest that training in antipredator behavior during captive rearing may increase behavioral competence and reduce losses to nest predators
A Millisecond Interferometric Search for Fast Radio Bursts with the Very Large Array
We report on the first millisecond timescale radio interferometric search for
the new class of transient known as fast radio bursts (FRBs). We used the Very
Large Array (VLA) for a 166-hour, millisecond imaging campaign to detect and
precisely localize an FRB. We observed at 1.4 GHz and produced visibilities
with 5 ms time resolution over 256 MHz of bandwidth. Dedispersed images were
searched for transients with dispersion measures from 0 to 3000 pc/cm3. No
transients were detected in observations of high Galactic latitude fields taken
from September 2013 though October 2014. Observations of a known pulsar show
that images typically had a thermal-noise limited sensitivity of 120 mJy/beam
(8 sigma; Stokes I) in 5 ms and could detect and localize transients over a
wide field of view. Our nondetection limits the FRB rate to less than
7e4/sky/day (95% confidence) above a fluence limit of 1.2 Jy-ms. Assuming a
Euclidean flux distribution, the VLA rate limit is inconsistent with the
published rate of Thornton et al. We recalculate previously published rates
with a homogeneous consideration of the effects of primary beam attenuation,
dispersion, pulse width, and sky brightness. This revises the FRB rate downward
and shows that the VLA observations had a roughly 60% chance of detecting a
typical FRB and that a 95% confidence constraint would require roughly 500
hours of similar VLA observing. Our survey also limits the repetition rate of
an FRB to 2 times less than any known repeating millisecond radio transient.Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 13 pages, 9 figure

A family with three affected members over two generations with features of Dermatosparaxic EDS (dEDS) autosomal dominant transmission was reported by Desai et al. and having a heterozygous nonsynonymous missense variant of ADAMTSL2 (c.1261G > A; p. Gly421Ser). Variation in this gene is also reported to cause autosomal recessive geleophysic dysplasia. We report five unrelated patients with the Gly421Ser variant identified from a large series of patients presenting with features of connective tissue disorders, each with a positive family history consistent with autosomal dominant transmission. Clinical features of a connective tissue disorder included generalized joint hypermobility and pain with fragility of internal and external tissues including of skin, dura, and arteries. Overall, our analyses including bioinformatics, protein modeling, and gene-protein interactions with the cases described would add evidence for the Gly421Ser variant in ADAMTSL2 as causative for variable expressivity of autosomal dominant connective tissue disorders
Discourse and identity in a corpus of lesbian erotica
This article uses corpus linguistic methodologies to explore representations of lesbian desires and identities in a corpus of lesbian erotica from the 1980s and 1990s. We provide a critical examination of the ways in which “lesbian gender,” power, and desire are represented, (re-)produced, and enacted, often in ways that challenge hegemonic discourses of gender and sexuality. By examining word frequencies and collocations, we critically analyze some of the themes, processes, and patterns of representation in the texts. Although rooted in linguistics, we hope this article provides an accessible, interdisciplinary, and timely contribution toward developing understandings of discursive practices surrounding gender and sexuality
Statement of the Third International Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia Consensus Development Conference, Carlsbad, California, 2015
The third International Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia (EAH) Consensus Development Conference convened in Carlsbad, California in February 2015 with a panel of 17 international experts. The delegates represented 4 countries and 9 medical and scientific sub-specialties pertaining to athletic training, exercise physiology, sports medicine, water/sodium metabolism, and body fluid homeostasis. The primary goal of the panel was to review the existing data on EAH and update the 2008 Consensus Statement.1 This document serves to replace the second International EAH Consensus Development Conference Statement and launch an educational campaign designed to address the morbidity and mortality associated with a preventable and treatable fluid imbalance.
The following statement is a summary of the data synthesized by the 2015 EAH Consensus Panel and represents an evolution of the most current knowledge on EAH. This document will summarize the most current information on the prevalence, etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of EAH for medical personnel, athletes, athletic trainers, and the greater public. The EAH Consensus Panel strove to clearly articulate what we agreed upon, did not agree upon, and did not know, including minority viewpoints that were supported by clinical experience and experimental data. Further updates will be necessary to both: (1) remain current with our understanding and (2) critically assess the effectiveness of our present recommendations. Suggestions for future research and educational strategies to reduce the incidence and prevalence of EAH are provided at the end of the document as well as areas of controversy that remain in this topic. State business: gender, sex and marriage in Tajikistan
This article examines the relation of the state to masculinity and sexuality by way of an exploration of the sexual problems of a young man and his wife in Tajikistan at the end of the Soviet era. It suggests that the regime’s inattention to this kind of issue was bound up with the importance to the state of projecting appropriate versions of masculinity. It further posits the idea that the continued refusal of the independent Tajik state to offer appropriate treatments for sexual dysfunction is consistent with the image of modernity President Rahmon wishes to present to the world. The article shows that as masculinity discursively occupies the superior gender position, with men expected to dominate, the state is itself impotent to respond when they are, in fact, unable to do so in sexual practice. However, the myth of male dominance persists to the point that it may prevent women from seeing beyond their subordination and finding mutually beneficial solutions in their familial and sexual relationships
