Hydrogen-methane fuel control systems for turbojet engines
Design, development, and test of a fuel conditioning and control system utilizing liquid methane (natural gas) and liquid hydrogen fuels for operation of a J85 jet engine were performed. The experimental program evaluated the stability and response of an engine fuel control employing liquid pumping of cryogenic fuels, gasification of the fuels at supercritical pressure, and gaseous metering and control. Acceptably stable and responsive control of the engine was demonstrated throughout the sea level power range for liquid gas fuel and up to 88 percent engine speed using liquid hydrogen fuel

What is the impact of psychiatric decision units on mental health crisis care pathways? Protocol for an interrupted time series analysis with a synthetic control study
Background
The UK mental health system is stretched to breaking point. Individuals presenting with mental health problems wait longer at the ED than those presenting with physical concerns and finding a bed when needed is difficult – 91% of psychiatric wards are operating at above the recommended occupancy rate. To address the pressure, a new type of facility – psychiatric decision units (also known as mental health decision units) – have been introduced in some areas. These are short-stay facilities, available upon referral, targeted to help individuals who may be able to avoid an inpatient admission or lengthy ED visit. To advance knowledge about the effectiveness of this service for this purpose, we will examine the effect of the service on the mental health crisis care pathway over a 4-year time period; the 2 years proceeding and following the introduction of the service. We use aggregate service level data of key indicators of the performance of this pathway.
Methods
Data from four mental health Trusts in England will be analysed using an interrupted time series (ITS) design with the primary outcomes of the rate of (i) ED psychiatric presentations and (ii) voluntary admissions to mental health wards. This will be supplemented with a synthetic control study with the same primary outcomes, in which a comparable control group is generated for each outcome using a donor pool of suitable National Health Service Trusts in England. The methods are well suited to an evaluation of an intervention at a service delivery level targeting population-level health outcome and the randomisation or ‘trialability’ of the intervention is limited. The synthetic control study controls for national trends over time, increasing our confidence in the results. The study has been designed and will be carried out with the involvement of service users and carers.
Discussion
This will be the first formal evaluation of psychiatric decision units in England. The analysis will provide estimates of the effect of the decision units on a number of important service use indicators, providing much-needed information for those designing service pathways
Heterogeneity in susceptibility dictates the order of epidemiological models
The fundamental models of epidemiology describe the progression of an
infectious disease through a population using compartmentalized differential
equations, but do not incorporate population-level heterogeneity in infection
susceptibility. We show that variation strongly influences the rate of
infection, while the infection process simultaneously sculpts the
susceptibility distribution. These joint dynamics influence the force of
infection and are, in turn, influenced by the shape of the initial variability.
Intriguingly, we find that certain susceptibility distributions (the
exponential and the gamma) are unchanged through the course of the outbreak,
and lead naturally to power-law behavior in the force of infection; other
distributions often tend towards these "eigen-distributions" through the
process of contagion. The power-law behavior fundamentally alters predictions
of the long-term infection rate, and suggests that first-order epidemic models
that are parameterized in the exponential-like phase may systematically and
significantly over-estimate the final severity of the outbreak
Adjustment with aphasia after stroke: study protocol for a pilot feasibility randomised controlled trial for SUpporting wellbeing through PEeR Befriending (SUPERB)
Background: Despite the high prevalence of mood problems after stroke, evidence on effective interventions particularly for those with aphasia is limited. There is a pressing need to systematically evaluate interventions aiming to improve wellbeing for people with stroke and aphasia. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of a peer-befriending intervention.
Methods/design: SUPERB is a single blind, parallel group feasibility trial of peer befriending for people with aphasia post-stroke and low levels of psychological distress. The trial includes a nested qualitative study and pilot economic evaluation and it compares usual care (n = 30) with usual care + peer befriending (n = 30). Feasibility outcomes include proportion screened who meet criteria, proportion who consent, rate of consent, number of missing/incomplete data on outcome measures, attrition rate at follow-up, potential value of conducting main trial using value of information analysis (economic evaluation), description of usual care, and treatment fidelity of peer befriending. Assessments and outcome measures (mood, wellbeing, communication, and social participation) for participants and significant others will be administered at baseline, with outcome measures re-administered at 4 and 10 months post-randomisation. Peer befrienders will complete outcome measures before training and after they have completed two cycles of befriending. The qualitative study will use semi-structured interviews of purposively sampled participants (n = 20) and significant others (n = 10) from both arms of the trial, and all peer befrienders to explore the acceptability of procedures and experiences of care. The pilot economic evaluation will utilise the European Quality of life measure (EQ-5D-5 L) and a stroke-adapted version of the Client Service Receipt Inventory (CSRI).
Discussion: This study will provide information on feasibility outcomes and an initial indication of whether peer befriending is a suitable intervention to explore further in a definitive phase III randomised controlled trial.

Peer support for discharge from inpatient to community mental health services: Study protocol clinical trial (SPIRIT Compliant).
INTRODUCTION: In the period shortly after discharge from inpatient to community mental health care, people are at increased risk of self-harm, suicide, and readmission to hospital. Discharge interventions including peer support have shown potential, and there is some evidence that community-based peer support reduces readmissions. However, systematic reviews of peer support in mental health services indicate poor trial quality and a lack of reporting of how peer support is distinctive from other mental health support. This study is designed to establish the clinical and cost effectiveness of a peer worker intervention to support discharge from inpatient to community mental health care, and to address issues of trial quality and clarity of reporting of peer support interventions. METHODS: This protocol describes an individually randomized controlled superiority trial, hypothesizing that people offered a peer worker discharge intervention in addition to usual follow-up care in the community are less likely to be readmitted in the 12 months post discharge than people receiving usual care alone. A total of 590 people will be recruited shortly before discharge from hospital and randomly allocated to care as usual plus the peer worker intervention or care as usual alone. Manualized peer support provided by trained peer workers begins in hospital and continues for 4 months in the community post discharge. Secondary psychosocial outcomes are assessed at 4 months post discharge, and service use and cost outcomes at 12 months post discharge, alongside a mixed methods process evaluation. DISCUSSION: Clearly specified procedures for sequencing participant allocation and for blinding assessors to allocation, plus full reporting of outcomes, should reduce risk of bias in trial findings and contribute to improved quality in the peer support evidence base. The involvement of members of the study team with direct experience of peer support, mental distress, and using mental health services, in coproducing the intervention and designing the trial, ensures that we theorize and clearly describe the peer worker intervention, and evaluate how peer support is related to any change in outcome. This is an important methodological contribution to the evidence base. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was prospectively registered as ISRCTN 10043328 on November 28, 2016
Dataset Construction and Analysis of Screenshot Malware
Among the various types of spyware, screenloggers are distinguished by their ability to capture screenshots. This gives them considerable nuisance capacity, giving rise to theft of sensitive data or, failing that, to serious invasions of the privacy of users. Several examples of attacks relying on this screen capture feature have been documented in recent years. However, there is not sufficient empirical and experimental evidence on this topic. Indeed, to the best of our knowledge, there is no dataset dedicated to screenshot-taking malware until today. The lack of datasets or common testbed platforms makes it difficult to analyse and study their behaviour in order to develop effective countermeasures. The screenshot feature is often a smart feature that does not activate automatically once the malware has infected the machine; the activation mechanisms of this function are often more complex. Consequently, a dataset which is completely dedicated to them would make it possible to better understand the subtleties of triggering screenshots and even to learn to distinguish them from the legitimate applications widely present on devices. The main purpose of this paper is to build such a dataset and analyse the behaviour of screenloggers
Constraints on the Stellar/Sub-stellar Mass Function in the Inner Orion Nebula Cluster
We present the results of a 0.5-0.9" FWHM imaging survey at K (2.2 micron)
and H (1.6 micron) covering 5.1' x 5.1' centered on Theta 1C Ori, the most
massive star in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). At the age and distance of this
cluster, and in the absence of extinction, the hydrogen burning limit (0.08 Mo)
occurs at K~13.5 mag while an object of mass 0.02 Mo has K~16.2 mag. Our
photometry is complete for source detection at the 7 sigma level to K~17.5 mag
and thus is sensitive to objects as low-mass as 0.02 Mo seen through visual
extinction values as high as 10 magnitudes. We use the observed magnitudes,
colors, and star counts to constrain the shape of the inner ONC stellar mass
function across the hydrogen burning limit. After determining the stellar age
and near-infrared excess properties of the optically visible stars in this same
inner ONC region, we present a new technique that incorporates these
distributions when extracting the mass function from the observed density of
stars in the K-(H-K) diagram. We find that our data are inconsistent with a
mass function that rises across the stellar/sub-stellar boundary. Instead, we
find that the most likely form of the inner ONC mass function is one that rises
to a peak around 0.15 Mo, and then declines across the hydrogen-burning limit
with slope N(log M) ~ M^(0.57+/-0.05). We emphasize that our conclusions apply
to the inner 0.71 pc x 0.71 pc of the ONC only; they may not apply to the ONC
as a whole where some evidence for general mass segregation has been found.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.

Temperature perturbation model of the opto-galvanic effect in CO2-laser discharges
A detailed discharge model of the opto-galvanic effect in molecular laser gas mixtures is developed based on the temperature perturbation or discharge cooling mechanism of Smith and Brooks (1979). Excellent agreement between the model and experimental results in CO2 laser gas mixtures is obtained. The model should be applicable to other molecular systems where the OGE is being used for laser stabilisation and as a spectroscopic tool
