How neutral is the intergalactic medium surrounding the redshift z=7.085 quasar ULAS J1120+0641?
The quasar ULAS J1120+0641 at redshift z=7.085 has a highly ionised near zone
which is smaller than those around quasars of similar luminosity at z~6. The
spectrum also exhibits evidence for a damping wing extending redward of the
systemic Lya redshift. We use radiative transfer simulations in a cosmological
context to investigate the implications for the ionisation state of the
inhomogeneous IGM surrounding this quasar. Our simulations show that the
transmission profile is consistent with an IGM in the vicinity of the quasar
with a volume averaged HI fraction of f_HI>0.1 and that ULAS J1120+0641 has
been bright for 10^6--10^7 yr. The observed spectrum is also consistent with
smaller IGM neutral fractions, f_HI ~ 10^-3--10-4, if a damped Lya system in an
otherwise highly ionised IGM lies within 5 proper Mpc of the quasar. This is,
however, predicted to occur in only ~5 per cent of our simulated sight-lines
for a bright phase of 10^6--10^7 yr. Unless ULAS J1120+0641 grows during a
previous optically obscured phase, the low age inferred for the quasar adds to
the theoretical challenge of forming a 2x10^9 M_sol black hole at this high

Exit Options in Corporate Finance: Liquidity versus Incentives
This paper provides a first study of the optimal design of active monitors' exit options in a problem involving a demand for liquidity and costly monitoring of the issuer. Optimal incentives to monitor the issuer may involve restricting the monitor's right to sell her claims on the firm's cash-flow early. But the monitor will then require a liquidity premium for holding such an illiquid claim. In general, therefore, there will be a trade off between incentives and liquidity. The paper highlights a fundamental complementarity between speculative monitoring in financial markets (which increases the informativeness of prices) and active monitoring inside the firm: in financial markets where price discovery is better and securities prices reflect the fundamentals of the issuer better, the incentive cost of greater liquidity may be smaller and active monitoring incentives may be preserved. The paper spells out the conditions under which more or less liquidity is warranted and applies the analysis to shed light on common exit provisions in venture capital financing.Economic
The seaweeds of Kenya: Checklist, history of seaweed study, coastal environment, and analysis of seaweed diversity and biogeography
The seaweeds of Kenya are relatively well documented in comparison with the marine floras of other countries in the Indian Ocean. A checklist is provided of the seaweeds recorded, which includes a total of 386 species (214 red algae, 116 green algae and 56 brown algae), plus an additional 19 infra-specific taxa. This is the first detailed list for almost 30 years, with a 29% increase in species compared to the previous listing. The history of seaweed study in Kenya and the Kenyan coastal environment as a habitat for seaweeds are discussed in detail. An ordination analysis of the global biogeographic relationships of the Kenyan seaweed flora shows clearly the internal consistency of the Indo-Pacific seaweed flora at this large scale. Data on Indian Ocean relationships show that the Kenyan flora produces a distinct grouping of seaweed floras from Tanzania, Madagascar, Mozambique and the Indian Ocean coast of South Africa, which is somewhat separated from the floras of the rest of the Indian Ocean. The data reveal that Mozambiquan seaweeds are seriously understudied, with only 26% of the Kenyan flora having been recorded in that country, compared with 68% in Tanzania, 41% in Madagascar, and 43% in South Africa
A New Einstein Cross: A Highly Magnified, Intrinsically Faint Lyman-Alpha Emitter at z=2.7
We report the discovery of a new Einstein cross at redshift z_S = 2.701 based
on Lyman-alpha emission in a cruciform configuration around an SDSS luminous
red galaxy (z_L = 0.331). The system was targeted as a possible lens based on
an anomalous emission line in the SDSS spectrum. Imaging and spectroscopy from
the W. M. Keck Observatory confirm the lensing nature of this system. This is
one of the widest-separation galaxy-scale lenses known, with an Einstein radius
of ~1.84 arcsec. We present simple gravitational lens models for the system and
compute the intrinsic properties of the lensed galaxy. The total mass of the
lensing galaxy within the 8.8 +/- 0.1 kpc enclosed by the lensed images is (5.2
+/- 0.1) x 10^11 M_sun. The lensed galaxy is a low mass galaxy (0.2 L*) with a
high equivalent-width Lyman-alpha line (EW_Lya_rest = 46 +/- 5 Angstroms).
Follow-up studies of this lens system can probe the mass structure of the
lensing galaxy, and can provide a unique view of an intrinsically faint,
high-redshift, star-forming galaxy at high signal-to-noise ratio.Comment: ApJ Letters, in pres
The Sloan Lens ACS Survey. IX. Colors, Lensing and Stellar Masses of Early-type Galaxies
We present the current photometric dataset for the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS)
Survey, including HST photometry from ACS, WFPC2, and NICMOS. These data have
enabled the confirmation of an additional 15 grade `A' (certain) lens systems,
bringing the number of SLACS grade `A' lenses to 85; including 13 grade `B'
(likely) systems, SLACS has identified nearly 100 lenses and lens candidates.
Approximately 80% of the grade `A' systems have elliptical morphologies while
~10% show spiral structure; the remaining lenses have lenticular morphologies.
Spectroscopic redshifts for the lens and source are available for every system,
making SLACS the largest homogeneous dataset of galaxy-scale lenses to date. We
have developed a novel Bayesian stellar population analysis code to determine
robust stellar masses with accurate error estimates. We apply this code to
deep, high-resolution HST imaging and determine stellar masses with typical
statistical errors of 0.1 dex; we find that these stellar masses are unbiased
compared to estimates obtained using SDSS photometry, provided that informative
priors are used. The stellar masses range from 10^10.5 to 10^11.8 M and
the typical stellar mass fraction within the Einstein radius is 0.4, assuming a
Chabrier IMF. The ensemble properties of the SLACS lens galaxies, e.g. stellar
masses and projected ellipticities, appear to be indistinguishable from other
SDSS galaxies with similar stellar velocity dispersions. This further supports
that SLACS lenses are representative of the overall population of massive
early-type galaxies with M* >~ 10^11 M, and are therefore an ideal
dataset to investigate the kpc-scale distribution of luminous and dark matter

Closing in on the picture : analyzing interactions in video recordings
This paper provides a detailed account of the processing and analysing of data, obtained through video recording during reflective practitioner research. It sets out five stages in the analysis of video recordings of classroom interactions during a series of educational drama lessons: from decisions relating to the selection of data for close analysis, to the seeking of themes, and finally to the presentation of conclusions. The researcher adapted and synthesised several processes derived from discourse analysis (Wells, 2001; Spiers, 2004; Gee, 2005) to produce a range of instruments for use in transcription and analysis of verbal and non-verbal discourse. These include: a simple transcription key; classifications for verbal and non-verbal discourse; and a template for a transcription and analysis matrix
The Application of Microperforated Panels in Duct Systems
Microperforated panels (MPPs) are usually considered to be an alternative sound absorbing surface treatment in architectural acoustics applications, where they can serve as effective, fiber-free replacements for the more traditional glass fibers and other porous materials. However, the areas in which MPPs may be applied are not only limited to the replacement of conventional sound absorbing materials, but MPPs can also be used in spaces where more conventional materials cannot be conveniently used. For example, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) duct application is one area where MPPs can be used as a stand-alone material,in contrast with glass fiber, which typically must be covered by perforated surface treatments to prevent erosion of the fibers due to the flow. In this study, it will be shown how a suitably designed MPP can be an effective noise control element in ducts by reducing fan and flow noise while at the same time maintaining the flow delivery performance of the duct
Metal abundances at z<1.5: new measurements in sub-Damped Lyman-alpha Absorbers
Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) and sub-DLAs seen toward background quasars
provide the most detailed probes of elemental abundances. Somewhat
paradoxically these measurements are more difficult at lower redshifts due to
the atmospheric cut-off, and so a few years ago our group began a programme to
study abundances at z < 1.5 in quasar absorbers. In this paper, we present new
UVES observations of six additional quasar absorption line systems at z < 1.5,
five of which are sub-DLAs. We find solar or above solar metallicity, as
measured by the abundance of zinc, assumed not to be affected by dust, in two
sub-DLAs: one, towards Q0138-0005 with [Zn/H]=+0.28 +/- 0.16; the other towards
Q2335+1501 with [Zn/H]=+0.07 +/- 0.34. Relatively high metallicity was observed
in another system: Q0123-0058 with [Zn/H]=-0.45 +/- 0.20. Only for the one DLA
in our sample, in Q0449-1645, do we find a low metallicity, [Zn/H]=-0.96 +/-
0.08. We also note that in some of these systems large relative abundance
variations from component to component are observed in Si, Mn, Cr and Zn.Comment: 7 figures and 10 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRA
