Self-completeness and spontaneous dimensional reduction
A viable quantum theory of gravity is one of the biggest challenges facing
physicists. We discuss the confluence of two highly expected features which
might be instrumental in the quest of a finite and renormalizable quantum
gravity -- spontaneous dimensional reduction and self-completeness. The former
suggests the spacetime background at the Planck scale may be effectively
two-dimensional, while the latter implies a condition of maximal compression of
matter by the formation of an event horizon for Planckian scattering. We
generalize such a result to an arbitrary number of dimensions, and show that
gravity in higher than four dimensions remains self-complete, but in lower
dimensions it is not. In such a way we established an "exclusive disjunction"
or "exclusive or" (XOR) between the occurrence of self-completeness and
dimensional reduction, with the goal of actually reducing the unknowns for the
scenario of the physics at the Planck scale. Potential phenomenological
implications of this result are considered by studying the case of a
two-dimensional dilaton gravity model resulting from dimensional reduction of

Toward a Social Practice Theory of Relational Competing
This paper brings together the competitive dynamics and strategy-aspractice literatures to investigate relational competition. Drawing on a global ethnography of the reinsurance market, we develop the concept of micro-competitions, which are the focus of competitors’ everyday competitive practices. We find variation in relational or rivalrous competition by individual competitors across the phases of a micro-competition, between competitors within a micro-competition, and across multiple micro-competitions. These variations arise from the interplay between the unfolding competitive arena and the implementation of each firm’s strategic portfolio. We develop a conceptual framework that makes four contributions to: relational competition; reconceptualizing action and response; elaborating on the awareness-motivation-capability framework within competitive dynamics; and the recursive dynamic by which implementing strategy inside firms shapes, and is shaped by, the competitive arena
Hawking emission from quantum gravity black holes
We address the issue of modelling quantum gravity effects in the evaporation
of higher dimensional black holes in order to go beyond the usual
semi-classical approximation. After reviewing the existing six families of
quantum gravity corrected black hole geometries, we focus our work on
non-commutative geometry inspired black holes, which encode model independent
characteristics, are unaffected by the quantum back reaction and have an
analytical form compact enough for numerical simulations. We consider the
higher dimensional, spherically symmetric case and we proceed with a complete
analysis of the brane/bulk emission for scalar fields. The key feature which
makes the evaporation of non-commutative black holes so peculiar is the
possibility of having a maximum temperature. Contrary to what happens with
classical Schwarzschild black holes, the emission is dominated by low frequency
field modes on the brane. This is a distinctive and potentially testable
signature which might disclose further features about the nature of quantum

Quantifier-Free Interpolation of a Theory of Arrays
The use of interpolants in model checking is becoming an enabling technology
to allow fast and robust verification of hardware and software. The application
of encodings based on the theory of arrays, however, is limited by the
impossibility of deriving quantifier- free interpolants in general. In this
paper, we show that it is possible to obtain quantifier-free interpolants for a
Skolemized version of the extensional theory of arrays. We prove this in two
ways: (1) non-constructively, by using the model theoretic notion of
amalgamation, which is known to be equivalent to admit quantifier-free
interpolation for universal theories; and (2) constructively, by designing an
interpolating procedure, based on solving equations between array updates.
(Interestingly, rewriting techniques are used in the key steps of the solver
and its proof of correctness.) To the best of our knowledge, this is the first
successful attempt of computing quantifier- free interpolants for a variant of
the theory of arrays with extensionality
Charged particle decay of hot and rotating Mo nuclei in fusion-evaporation reactions
A study of fusion-evaporation and (partly) fusion-fission channels for the
Mo compound nucleus, produced at different excitation energies in the
reaction Ti + Ca at 300, 450 and 600 MeV beam energies, is
presented. Fusion-evaporation and fusion-fission cross sections have been
extracted and compared with the existing systematics. Experimental data
concerning light charged particles have been compared with the prediction of
the statistical model in its implementation in the Gemini++ code, well suited
even for high spin systems, in order to tune the main model parameters in a
mass region not abundantly covered by exclusive experimental data.
Multiplicities for light charged particles emitted in fusion evaporation events
are also presented. Some discrepancies with respect to the prediction of the
statistical model have been found for forward emitted -particles; they
may be due both to pre-equilibrium emission and to reaction channels (such as
Deep Inelastic Collisions, QuasiFission/QuasiFusion) different from the

Reduced level of arousal and increased mortality in adult acute medical admissions: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Abstract Background Reduced level of arousal is commonly observed in medical admissions and may predict in-hospital mortality. Delirium and reduced level of arousal are closely related. We systematically reviewed and conducted a meta-analysis of studies in adult acute medical patients of the relationship between reduced level of arousal on admission and in-hospital mortality. Methods We conducted a systematic review (PROSPERO: CRD42016022048), searching MEDLINE and EMBASE. We included studies of adult patients admitted with acute medical illness with level of arousal assessed on admission and mortality rates reported. We performed meta-analysis using a random effects model. Results From 23,941 studies we included 21 with 14 included in the meta-analysis. Mean age range was 33.4 - 83.8 years. Studies considered unselected general medical admissions (8 studies, n=13,039) or specific medical conditions (13 studies, n=38,882). Methods of evaluating level of arousal varied. The prevalence of reduced level of arousal was 3.1%-76.9% (median 13.5%). Mortality rates were 1.7%-58% (median 15.9%). Reduced level of arousal was associated with higher in-hospital mortality (pooled OR 5.71; 95% CI 4.21-7.74; low quality evidence: high risk of bias, clinical heterogeneity and possible publication bias). Conclusions Reduced level of arousal on hospital admission may be a strong predictor of in-hospital mortality. Most evidence was of low quality. Reduced level of arousal is highly specific to delirium, better formal detection of hypoactive delirium and implementation of care pathways may improve outcomes. Future studies to assess the impact of interventions on in-hospital mortality should use validated assessments of both level of arousal and delirium
Minimum black hole mass from colliding Gaussian packets
We study the formation of a black hole in the collision of two Gaussian
packets. Rather than following their dynamical evolution in details, we assume
a horizon forms when the mass function for the two packets becomes larger than
half the flat areal radius, as it would occur in a spherically symmetric
geometry. This simple approximation allows us to determine the existence of a
minimum black hole mass solely related to the width of the packets. We then
comment on the possible physical implications, both in classical and quantum
physics, and models with extra spatial dimensions.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

Part 1: IS/IT Implementation and AppropriationInternational audienceOrganizational researchers have acknowledged that understanding the relationship between technology and organization is crucial to understanding modern organizing and organizational change [1]. There has been a significant amount of debate concerning the theoretical foundation of this relationship. Our research draws and extends Deleuze and DeLanda’s work on assemblages and Callon’s concept of performation to investigate how different sociomaterial practices are changed and stabilized after the implementation of new technology. Our findings from an in-depth study of two ambulatory clinics within a hospital system indicate that “perform-ing” of constituting, counter-performing, calibrating, and stratifying explained the process of sociomaterial change and that this process is governed by an overarching principle of “performative exigency”. Future studies on sociomateriality and change may benefit from a deeper understanding of how sociomaterial assemblages are rendered performative
Tumor markers in breast cancer - European Group on Tumor Markers recommendations
Recommendations are presented for the routine clinical use of serum and tissue-based markers in the diagnosis and management of patients with breast cancer. Their low sensitivity and specificity preclude the use of serum markers such as the MUC-1 mucin glycoproteins ( CA 15.3, BR 27.29) and carcinoembryonic antigen in the diagnosis of early breast cancer. However, serial measurement of these markers can result in the early detection of recurrent disease as well as indicate the efficacy of therapy. Of the tissue-based markers, measurement of estrogen and progesterone receptors is mandatory in the selection of patients for treatment with hormone therapy, while HER-2 is essential in selecting patients with advanced breast cancer for treatment with Herceptin ( trastuzumab). Urokinase plasminogen activator and plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 are recently validated prognostic markers for lymph node-negative breast cancer patients and thus may be of value in selecting node-negative patients that do not require adjuvant chemotherapy. How do things become strategic? ‘Strategifying’ corporate social responsibility
How do things become ‘strategic’? Despite the development of strategy-as-practice studies and the recognized institutional importance of strategy as a social practice, little is known about how strategy boundaries change within organizations. This article focuses on this gap by conceptualizing ‘strategifying’ – or making something strategic – as a type of institutional work that builds on the institution of strategy to change the boundaries of what is regarded as strategy within organizations. We empirically investigate how corporate social responsibility has been turned into strategy at a UK electricity company, EnergyCorp. Our findings reveal the practices that constitute three types of strategifying work – cognitive coupling, relational coupling and material coupling – and show how, together and over time, these types of work changed the boundaries of strategy so that corporate social responsibility became included in EnergyCorp’s official strategy, became explicitly attended to by strategists and corporate executives and became inscribed within strategy devices. By disambiguating the notions of strategifying and strategizing, our study introduces new perspectives for analysing the institutional implications of the practice of strategy
