    High--Resolution 3D Simulations of Relativistic Jets

    We have performed high-resolution 3D simulations of relativistic jets with beam flow Lorentz factors up to 7, a spatial resolution of 8 cells per beam radius, and for up to 75 normalized time units to study the morphology and dynamics of 3D relativistic jets. Our simulations show that the coherent fast backflows found in axisymmetric models are not present in 3D models. We further find that when the jet is exposed to non-axisymmetric perturbations, (i) it does not display the strong perturbations found for 3D classical hydrodynamic and MHD jets (at least during the period of time covered by our simulations), and (ii) it does propagate according to the 1D estimate. Small 3D effects in the relativistic beam give rise to a lumpy distribution of apparent speeds like that observed in M87. The beam is surrounded by a boundary layer of high specific internal energy.     Relativistic Jets from Collapsars

    We have studied the relativistic beamed outflow proposed to occur in the collapsar model of gamma-ray bursts. A jet forms as a consequence of an assumed energy deposition of 10501051\sim 10^{50}- 10^{51} erg/s within a 3030^{\circ} cone around the rotation axis of the progenitor star. The generated jet flow is strongly beamed (\la few degrees) and reaches the surface of the stellar progenitor (r 31010\approx 3 10^{10} cm) intact. At break-out the maximum Lorentz factor of the jet flow is about 33.     Relativistic hydrodynamics on spacelike and null surfaces: Formalism and computations of spherically symmetric spacetimes

    We introduce a formulation of Eulerian general relativistic hydrodynamics which is applicable for (perfect) fluid data prescribed on either spacelike or null hypersurfaces. Simple explicit expressions for the characteristic speeds and fields are derived in the general case. A complete implementation of the formalism is developed in the case of spherical symmetry. The algorithm is tested in a number of different situations, predisposing for a range of possible applications. We consider the Riemann problem for a polytropic gas, with initial data given on a retarded/advanced time slice of Minkowski spacetime. We compute perfect fluid accretion onto a Schwarzschild black hole spacetime using ingoing null Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates. Tests of fluid evolution on dynamic background include constant density and TOV stars sliced along the radial null cones. Finally, we consider the accretion of self-gravitating matter onto a central black hole and the ensuing increase in the mass of the black hole horizon.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Phys.     One-year monitoring of nitrogen forms after the application of various types of biochar on different soils

    Biochar is a carbon rich product obtained from pyrolysis of biomass. The use of biochar as soil amendment has been boosted in the last years due to its possible influence on fertility, including its potential ability to lower mineral nitrogen losses, but specially for its potential to reduce greenhouse gases and to increase carbon sequestration in soil. However, the studies on the effects of biochar on nitrogen forms in soil are heterogeneous and contradictory. The present work aims to clarify this point by applying 6 different biochars (with different origin and production process) on 6 different soils (of different properties). The amendment corresponded to an agronomic addition rate of 30 Mg ha− 1 , together with the addition of urea at a 100 kg N per ha rate. Then those mixtures were incubated for one year at a 60% of the WHC. The samples were analyzed for nitrogen forms (Kjeldahl-N, ammonium-N, nitrate-N, nitrite-N, and microbial-N) at different incubation times (1 week, 1 month, 4 months and 1 year after the addition). The results showed that the effects of different biochars on the soil nitrogen forms were variegated, mainly attributable to soil properties, and to a lesser extent to the particular biochar used. Overall, the Kjeldahl-N (KN) decreased after the incubation time, and only the mixtures with N-rich biochars achieved slightly higher KN compared to controls. Also, biochars tended to induce a decrease in NH4 +-N, and, especially, in NO3 - -N. The biochars causing highest shifts on N inorganic forms were those produced from agronomic sources (olive and corn wastes) and the one from pine wood materials subjected to high pyrolysis temperature conditions

    Biomarkers improve mortality prediction by prognostic scales in community-acquired pneumonia

    Background: Prognostic scales provide a useful tool to predict mortality in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). However, the inflammatory response of the host, crucial in resolution and outcome, is not included in the prognostic scales. Methods: The aim of this study was to investigate whether information about the initial inflammatory cytokine profile and markers increases the accuracy of prognostic scales to predict 30-day mortality. To this aim, a prospective cohort study in two tertiary care hospitals was designed. Procalcitonin (PCT), C-reactive protein (CRP) and the systemic cytokines tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) and interleukins IL6, IL8 and IL10 were measured at admission. Initial severity was assessed by PSI (Pneumonia Severity Index), CURB65 (Confusion, Urea nitrogen, Respiratory rate, Blood pressure, > or = 65 years of age) and CRB65 (Confusion, Respiratory rate, Blood pressure, > or = 65 years of age) scales. A total of 453 hospitalised CAP patients were included. Results: The 36 patients who died (7.8%) had significantly increased levels of IL6, IL8, PCT and CRP. In regression logistic analyses, high levels of CRP and IL6 showed an independent predictive value for predicting 30-day mortality, after adjustment for prognostic scales. Adding CRP to PSI significantly increased the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) from 0.80 to 0.85, that of CURB65 from 0.82 to 0.85 and that of CRB65 from 0.79 to 0.85. Adding IL6 or PCT values to CRP did not significantly increase the AUC of any scale. When using two scales (PSI and CURB65/CRB65) and CRP simultaneously the AUC was 0.88. Conclusions: Adding CRP levels to PSI, CURB65 and CRB65 scales improves the 30-day mortality prediction. The highest predictive value is reached with a combination of two scales and CRP. Further validation of that improvement is needed

    Longitudinal association of telomere length and obesity indices in an intervention study with a Mediterranean diet: the PREDIMED-NAVARRA trial

    Background: Telomeres are nucleoprotein structures that protect the ends of eukaryote chromosomes. Shorter telomere length (TL) is associated with some age-related human disorders, but its relationship with obesity or adiposity parameters remains unclear. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between TL and changes in adiposity indices after a 5-year nutritional intervention. Design and subjects: TL was measured by quantitative real-time PCR in 521 subjects (55-80 years, 55% women). Participants were randomly selected from the PREDIMED-NAVARRA centre after they completed a 5-year intervention programme. Anthropometric parameters were directly measured by trained personnel at baseline and on a yearly basis thereafter. TL at baseline and changes in TL after a 5-year intervention were assessed. Results: Higher baseline TL significantly predicted a greater decrease in body weight (B=−1.09 kg, 95% confidence interval (CI): −2.01 to −0.16), body mass index (BMI) (B=−0.47 kg m−2, 95% CI: −0.83 to −0.11), waist circumference (B=−1.15 cm, 95% CI: −2.28 to −0.01) and waist to height ratio (B=−0.008, 95% CI: −0.010 to −0.001) in multiple-adjusted models. In addition, changes in TL during the 5-year intervention were inversely associated with changes in the four anthropometric variables. The reduction in adiposity indices during the intervention, associated with increasing TL, was even higher among subjects with the longest telomeres at baseline. Logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of remaining obese after 5 years was lower in those participants who initially had the longest telomeres and increased their TL after intervention (odds ratio=0.27, 95% CI: 0.03-2.03). Conclusions: Our research suggests that TL is inversely associated with changes in obesity parameters. The assessment of TL can provide further insights for biological pathways leading to adiposity. We show for the first time an improvement of obesity indices when an increase in TL is observed after a 5-year Mediterranean diet intervention

    Phage inducible islands in the gram-positive cocci

    The SaPIs are a cohesive subfamily of extremely common phage-inducible chromosomal islands (PICIs) that reside quiescently at specific att sites in the staphylococcal chromosome and are induced by helper phages to excise and replicate. They are usually packaged in small capsids composed of phage virion proteins, giving rise to very high transfer frequencies, which they enhance by interfering with helper phage reproduction. As the SaPIs represent a highly successful biological strategy, with many natural Staphylococcus aureus strains containing two or more, we assumed that similar elements would be widespread in the Gram-positive cocci. On the basis of resemblance to the paradigmatic SaPI genome, we have readily identified large cohesive families of similar elements in the lactococci and pneumococci/streptococci plus a few such elements in Enterococcus faecalis. Based on extensive ortholog analyses, we found that the PICI elements in the four different genera all represent distinct but parallel lineages, suggesting that they represent convergent evolution towards a highly successful lifestyle. We have characterized in depth the enterococcal element, EfCIV583, and have shown that it very closely resembles the SaPIs in functionality as well as in genome organization, setting the stage for expansion of the study of elements of this type.     Very Large Baseline Array observations of Mrk 6 : probing the jet-lobe connection

    We present the results of high-resolution VLBI (very long baseline interferometry) observations at 1.6 and 4.9 GHz of the radio-loud Seyfert galaxy, Mrk 6. These observations are able to detect a compact radio core in this galaxy for the first time. The core has an inverted spectral index (α1.6 4.9 = +1.0 ± 0.2) and a brightness temperature of 1 × 108 K. Three distinct radio components, which resemble jet elements and/or hotspots, are also detected. The position angles of these elongated jet elements point not only to a curved jet in Mrk 6, but also towards a connection between the AGN and the kpc-scale radio lobes/bubbles in this galaxy. Firmer constraints on the star formation rate provided by new Herschel observations (SFR <0.8 M⊙ yr-1) make the starburst-wind-powered bubble scenario implausible. From plasma speeds, obtained via prior Chandra X-ray observations, and ram pressure balance arguments for the interstellar medium and radio bubbles, the north-south bubbles are expected to take 7.5 × 106 yr to form, and the east-west bubbles 1.4 × 106 yr. We suggest that the jet axis has changed at least once in Mrk 6 within the last ≈107 yr. A comparison of the nuclear radio-loudness of Mrk 6 and a small sample of Seyfert galaxies with a subset of low-luminosity FR I radio galaxies reveals a continuum in radio properties.Peer reviewe

    International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force Consensus Proposal: Diagnostic approach to epilepsy in dogs

    This article outlines the consensus proposal on diagnosis of epilepsy in dogs by the International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force. The aim of this consensus proposal is to improve consistency in the diagnosis of epilepsy in the clinical and research settings. The diagnostic approach to the patient presenting with a history of suspected epileptic seizures incorporates two fundamental steps: to establish if the events the animal is demonstrating truly represent epileptic seizures and if so, to identify their underlying cause. Differentiation of epileptic seizures from other non-epileptic episodic paroxysmal events can be challenging. Criteria that can be used to make this differentiation are presented in detail and discussed. Criteria for the diagnosis of idiopathic epilepsy (IE) are described in a three-tier system. Tier I confidence level for the diagnosis of IE is based on a history of two or more unprovoked epileptic seizures occurring at least 24 h apart, age at epileptic seizure onset of between six months and six years, unremarkable inter-ictal physical and neurological examination, and no significant abnormalities on minimum data base blood tests and urinalysis. Tier II confidence level for the diagnosis of IE is based on the factors listed in tier I and unremarkable fasting and post-prandial bile acids, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain (based on an epilepsy-specific brain MRI protocol) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. Tier III confidence level for the diagnosis of IE is based on the factors listed in tier I and II and identification of electroencephalographic abnormalities characteristic for seizure disorders. The authors recommend performing MRI of the brain and routine CSF analysis, after exclusion of reactive seizures, in dogs with age at epileptic seizure onset 6 years, inter-ictal neurological abnormalities consistent with intracranial neurolocalisation, status epilepticus or cluster seizure at epileptic seizure onset, or a previous presumptive diagnosis of IE and drug-resistance with a single antiepileptic drug titrated to the highest tolerable dose

    Factores de riesgo cardiovascular entre pacientes con síndrome de Cushing, curados y no curados con respecto a un grupo control

    Objetivos: Describir los factores de riesgo cardiovascular que se presentan en el paciente con Síndrome de Cushing (SC), para establecer programas educativos adaptados a este grupo de pacientes. Método: El ámbito de estudio se desarrolló en el Hospital de Sant Pau, en el Servicio de Endocrinología. Se extrajeron datos de las Historias Clínicas de los pacientes que fueron visitados en consultas con diagnóstico de SC en el 2005, realizándose una recogida retrospectiva. No se excluyó ningún paciente, independientemente de los años de duración de la patología, de las opciones terapéuticas o del tratamiento farmacológico recibido, incluyendo todos los pacientes con SC. Elaboramos una hoja de recogida de datos demográficos, clínicos (peso, índice de masa corporal, tensión arterial, perímetro abdominal) y analíticos (lípidos, glicemia); para el tratamiento informático se utilizó el programa SPSS. Resultados: El perímetro abdominal fue mayor en pacientes no curados (100.8 ±13.9cm) que en controles (89±12.8cm) (p<0.05). Respecto al peso no se encontraron diferencias significativas entre controles (69,9±13,3Kg), curados (69,9±16,5Kg) y no curados (76,4±16,5Kg). El IMC tampoco reflejó diferencias en los tres grupos en estudio: control (26,5±5,2), curados (27,8±6,4) y no curados (29,3±3,8). El colesterol fue más alto en los pacientes curados (5.90±0.92mmol/L) que en controles (5.38±1.07mmol/L) (p<0.05), al igual que los triglicéridos (1.20±0.51mmol/L versus controles 1.05±0.56mmol/L; p<0.05). Ambos grupos de pacientes presentaron presión sistólica mayor que los controles (curados,128.3±16.7mmHg p<0.05; no curados,134.1±13mmHg, p<0.001). Los no curados (78.6±9.2mmHg) presentaron además presión diastólica mayor que los controles (72.3±8.6, p<0.05) Fig.3. No observamos diferencias en la glicemia basal entre los 3 grupos de pacientes. Conclusiones: Los pacientes con SC, curados de su hipercortisolismo y con enfermedad activa presentan mayor riesgo cardiovascular y metabólico, comparados con el grupo control. La enfermera educadora deberá contemplar e incluir en los programas de prevención secundaria a dichos pacientes, para promocionar hábitos saludables, prevenir y controlar sus factores de riesgo.
