    Lubrication of DLC Coatings with Two Tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate Anion-Based Ionic Liquids

    The lubrication of a Cr-DLC coating with ethyl-dimethyl-2-methoxyethylammonium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluoropho-sphate [(NEMM)MOE][FAP] and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrro-lidinium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate [BMP] [FAP] ionic liquids (ILs) as 1 wt% additives to a polyalphaolefin (PAO 6) was studied. Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) was also used as reference in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the ILs. Reciprocating ball-on-plate tribological tests at loads of 20 and 40 N were performed. The results showed that both ILs exhibited a friction reduction, especially at the lowest load tested. Antiwear properties were also improved; the PAO 6 + 1% [BMP][FAP] mixture was slightly better, close to the values for PAO 6 + 1% ZDDP. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that the additive–surface interaction was responsible for the tribological improvement

    Modeling Slope Instability as Shear Rupture Propagation in a Saturated Porous Medium

    When a region of intense shear in a slope is much thinner than other relevant geometric lengths, this shear failure may be approximated as localized slip, as in faulting, with strength determined by frictional properties of the sediment and effective stress normal to the failure surface. Peak and residual frictional strengths of submarine sediments indicate critical slope angles well above those of most submarine slopes—in contradiction to abundant failures. Because deformation of sediments is governed by effective stress, processes affecting pore pressures are a means of strength reduction. However, common methods of exami ning slope stability neglect dynamically variable pore pressure during failure. We examine elastic-plastic models of the capped Drucker-Prager type and derive approximate equations governing pore pressure about a slip surface when the adjacent material may deform plastically. In the process we identify an elastic-plastic hydraulic diffusivity with an evolving permeability and plastic storage term analogous to the elastic term of traditional poroelasticity. We also examine their application to a dynamically propagating subsurface rupture and find indications of downslope directivity.Earth and Planetary SciencesEngineering and Applied Science

    Coseismic fault lubrication by viscous deformation

    Despite the hazard posed by earthquakes, we still lack fundamental understanding of the processes that control fault lubrication behind a propagating rupture front and enhance ground acceleration. Laboratory experiments show that fault materials dramatically weaken when sheared at seismic velocities (>0.1 m s−1). Several mechanisms, triggered by shear heating, have been proposed to explain the coseismic weakening of faults, but none of these mechanisms can account for experimental and seismological evidence of weakening. Here we show that, in laboratory experiments, weakening correlates with local temperatures attained during seismic slip in simulated faults for diverse rock-forming minerals. The fault strength evolves according to a simple, material-dependent Arrhenius-type law. Microstructures support this observation by showing the development of a principal slip zone with textures typical of sub-solidus viscous flow. We show evidence that viscous deformation (at either sub- or super-solidus temperatures) is an important, widespread and quantifiable coseismic lubrication process. The operation of these highly effective fault lubrication processes means that more energy is then available for rupture propagation and the radiation of hazardous seismic waves

    Antifriction and Antiwear Properties of an Ionic Liquid with Fluorine-Containing Anion Used as Lubricant Additive.

    Tribological behavior of trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide [P66614][NTf2] ionic liquid (IL) used as additive in a diester oil at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5 and 1 wt% was studied in this research. The IL solubility in the base oil was measured using the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique, and corrosion analysis was done at room temperature at relative humidity of 49–77%. Tribological tests were conducted for 30 min at room temperature, 15 Hz frequency, 4 mm of stroke length, a load of 80 N (corresponding to 2 GPa of maximum contact pressure) and relative humidity of 35–53%. Friction coefficient was recorded during tests, and the wear scar was measured by confocal microscopy. Worn surface was also analyzed by SEM, EDS and XPS. Results showed that a saturated solution of [P66614][NTf2] in the base oil contains about 30 wt% of IL and corrosion activity for the highest concentration of IL (1 wt%) was not found after a 20-day test. Although the base oil and the mixtures had similar friction behavior, only the 1 wt% sample exhibited slightly lower wear volume than the base oil. SEM images exhibited similar wear track width (707–796 µm) and wear mechanism (adhesive) for all samples tested. In addition, the EDS spectra only showed the elements present in the steel. Finally, the XPS measurements could not detect differences regarding iron chemical state among the samples, which is consistent with the tribological behavior obtained

    Thermal weakening friction during seismic slip experiments and models with heat sources and sinks

    Experiments that systematically explore rock friction under crustal earthquake conditions reveal that faults undergo abrupt dynamic weakening. Processes related to heating and weakening of fault surfaces have been invoked to explain pronounced velocity weakening. Both contact asperity temperature Ta and background temperature T of the slip zone evolve significantly during high-velocity slip due to heat sources (frictional work), heat sinks (e.g., latent heat of decomposition processes), and diffusion. Using carefully calibrated High-Velocity Rotary Friction experiments, we test the compatibility of thermal weakening models: (1) a model of friction based only on T in an extremely simplified, Arrhenius-like thermal dependence; (2) a flash heating model which accounts for the evolution of both V and T; (3) same but including heat sinks in the thermal balance; and (4) same but including the thermal dependence of diffusivity and heat capacity. All models reflect the experimental results but model (1) results in unrealistically low temperatures and model (2) reproduces the restrengthening phase only by modifying the parameters for each experimental condition. The presence of dissipative heat sinks in stage (3) significantly affects T and reflects on the friction, allowing a better joint fit of the initial weakening and final strength recovery across a range of experiments. Temperature is significantly altered by thermal dependence of (4). However, similar results can be obtained by (3) and (4) by adjusting the energy sinks.     Tribological performance of tributylmethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide as neat lubricant and as an additive in a polar oil

    The ionic liquid (IL) tributylmethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([N4441][NTf2]) was used as neat lubricant and as an additive (1.5 wt%) in a polar oil to study its friction and wear reducing properties. Tribological tests were completed for 90 minutes at room temperature and 100 °C in a reciprocating configuration at loads of 30 and 70 N, 10 Hz-frequency, and 4 mm stroke length. Wear volume was measured by confocal microscopy and the surface-IL interaction determined by XPS. The main findings were that neat IL showed the best tribological behavior; the IL-containing mixture behaved similar to the base oil regarding friction, however outperformed the antiwear behavior of the base oil under higher temperature; surface-IL chemical interaction was found mainly at 100 °C

    Boundary film formation of ionic liquid (IL) 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [HMIM][BF4], as an additive of hydrocracked mineral oil is evaluated for a steel–steel contact. Accelerated wear testing was carried out using a high frequency reciprocating rig (HFRR) under these test conditions: maximum contact pressure of 1.04 GPa, two different temperatures (40 and 100 °C) and three different times (300, 1800 and 3600 s). Wear volumes were measured using a non-contact 3D profilometer while worn surfaces were characterized using XPS. Furthermore, electrical contact resistance (ECR) was used as qualitative indicator of the formation of electrically insulating films in the sliding contact. Experiments show that the rate of boundary film formation of base oil-ionic liquid blend is faster than neat base oil. Moreover, ECR was in good agreement with film formation and friction behaviour. Ionic liquid as additive not only decreases the time of running-in but also the time of wear-in. Results of neat base oil show that wear-in was not reached during any duration of tests. The improved friction and wear results for the blend are closely related to the boundary film formation on the worn surfaces due to the reactivity of the anion with the steel surfaces
