Scattering of surface plasmons by one-dimensional periodic nanoindented surfaces
In this work, the scattering of surface plasmons by a finite periodic array
of one-dimensional grooves is theoretically analyzed by means of a modal
expansion technique. We have found that the geometrical parameters of the array
can be properly tuned to achieve optimal performance of the structure either as
a Bragg reflector or as a converter of surface plasmons into light. In this
last case, the emitted light is collimated within a few degrees cone.
Importantly, we also show that a small number of indentations in the array are
sufficient to fully achieve its functional capabilities.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures; changed sign convention in some definition
Analysis of Deterioration in a Plasma Focus Device
Indexación: Scopus. The Plasma Focus (PF) is a kind of dense transient plasmas in with high-pulsed voltage. To produce devices for eld application it is necessary to obtain PF equipment able to operate for a long period of time. Thus, a reliability analysis is indispensable. In this work a reliability analysis program for plasma focus devices is presented. The program considers a criticality analysis using Failure Modes and Effects Criticality Analysis (FMECA) to identify the most important failure modes of the system. Said failure modes are studied operating the Plasma Focus for many cycles, obtaining from them the characteristic curves of V(t) and İ(t). Feature Extraction (FE) techniques are applied to obtain a list of parameters that correlate to the degrading process. Furthermore, Machine Learning tools are used to learn from the obtained data, linking the changes in these parameters during its life cycle to the decay of the system in hope for future implementation of a predictive maintenance system and a reference for data analysis and prediction in PFs. The study was applied to a portable plasma focus device operated at 2 joules of stored energy. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.The work is supported by IAEA CRP contract 20370 and by grant ACT-1115, CONICYT, Chile.https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1742-6596/1043/1/01204
Scattering of surface plasmon polaritons by one-dimensional inhomogeneities
The scattering of surface plasmons polaritons by a one-dimensional defect of
the surface is theoretically studied, by means of both Rayleigh and modal
expansions. The considered defects are either relief perturbations or
variations in the permittivity of the metal. The dependence of transmission,
reflection and out-of-plane scattering on parameters defining the defect is
presented. We find that the radiated energy is forwardly directed (with respect
to the surface plasmon propagation) in the case of an impedance defect.
However, for relief defects, the radiated energy may be directed into backward
or forward (or both) directions, depending on the defect width.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, corrected typos, some minor modifications in

Using radio astronomical receivers for molecular spectroscopic characterization in astrochemical laboratory simulations: A proof of concept
We present a proof of concept on the coupling of radio astronomical receivers
and spectrometers with chemical reactorsand the performances of the resulting
setup for spectroscopy and chemical simulations in laboratory astrophysics.
Several experiments including cold plasma generation and UV photochemistry were
performed in a 40\,cm long gas cell placed in the beam path of the Aries 40\,m
radio telescope receivers operating in the 41-49 GHz frequency range interfaced
with fast Fourier transform spectrometers providing 2 GHz bandwidth and 38 kHz
resolution.
The impedance matching of the cell windows has been studied using different
materials. The choice of the material and its thickness was critical to obtain
a sensitivity identical to that of standard radio astronomical observations.
Spectroscopic signals arising from very low partial pressures of CH3OH,
CH3CH2OH, HCOOH, OCS,CS, SO2 (<1E-03 mbar) were detected in a few seconds. Fast
data acquisition was achieved allowing for kinetic measurements in
fragmentation experiments using electron impact or UV irradiation. Time
evolution of chemical reactions involving OCS, O2 and CS2 was also observed
demonstrating that reactive species, such as CS, can be maintained with high
abundance in the gas phase during these experiments.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics in September

Optimal light harvesting structures at optical and infrared frequencies
One-dimensional light harvesting structures with a realistic geometry
nano-patterned on an opaque metallic film are optimized to render high
transmission efficiencies at optical and infrared frequencies. Simple design
rules are developed for the particular case of a slit-groove array with a given
number of grooves that are symmetrically distributed with respect to a central
slit. These rules take advantage of the hybridization of Fabry-Perot modes in
the slit and surface modes of the corrugated metal surface. Same design rules
apply for optical and infrared frequencies. The parameter space of the groove
array is also examined with a conjugate gradient optimization algorithm that
used as a seed the geometries optimized following physical intuition. Both
uniform and nonuniform groove arrays are considered. The largest transmission
enhancement, with respect to a uniform array, is obtained for a chirped groove
profile. Such enhancement is a function of the wavelength. It decreases from
39% in the optical part of the spectrum to 15% at the long wavelength infrared.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
Geologic mapping of the Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko's Northern hemisphere
The Optical, Spectroscopic, and Infrared Remote Imaging System (OSIRIS), the scientific
imaging system onboard the Rosetta mission, has been acquiring images of the nucleus of
the comet 67P/Churyumov¿Gerasimenko since 2014 August with a resolution which allows
a detailed analysis of its surface. Indeed, data reveal a complex surface morphology which is
likely the expression of different processes which occurred at different times on the cometary
nucleus. In order to characterize these different morphologies and better understand their
distribution, we performed a geologic mapping of comet¿s 67P Northern hemisphere in which
features have been distinguished based on their morphological, textural and stratigraphic
characteristics. For this purpose, we used narrow-angle camera images acquired in 2014
August and September with a spatial scale ranging from 1.2 to 2.4 m pixel¿1. Several different
geologic units have been identified on the basis of their different surface textures, granulometry
and morphology. Some of these units are distinctive and localized, whereas others are more
common and distributed all over the Northern hemisphere. Moreover, different types of linear
features have been distinguished on the basis of their morphology. Some of these lineaments
have never been observed before on a comet and can offer important clues on the internal
structures of the nucleus itself. The geologic mapping results presented here will allow us to
better understand the processes which affected the nucleus¿ surface and thus the origin and
evolutionary history of comet 67P/Churyumov¿Gerasimenko. © 2016 The Authors. The support of the national funding agencies of Germany (DLR), France(CNES), Italy(ASI), Spain(MEC), Sweden(SNSB) and the ESA Technical Directorate is gratefully acknowledged.Peer Reviewe
Triggering antitumoural drug release and gene expression by magnetic hyperthermia
Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are promising tools for a wide array of biomedical applications. One of their most outstanding properties is the ability to generate heat when exposed to alternating magnetic fields, usually exploited in magnetic hyperthermia therapy of cancer. In this contribution, we provide a critical review of the use of MNPs and magnetic hyperthermia as drug release and gene expression triggers for cancer therapy. Several strategies for the release of chemotherapeutic drugs from thermo-responsive matrices are discussed, providing representative examples of their application at different levels (from proof of concept to in vivo applications). The potential of magnetic hyperthermia to promote in situ expression of therapeutic genes using vectors that contain heat-responsive promoters is also reviewed in the context of cancer gene therapy
Efficient unidirectional nanoslit couplers for surface plasmons
Plasmonics is based on surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes which can be
laterally confined below the diffraction limit, thereby enabling ultracompact
optical components. In order to exploit this potential, the fundamental
bottleneck of poor light-SPP coupling must be overcome. In established SPP
sources (using prism, grating} or nanodefect coupling) incident light is a
source of noise for the SPP, unless the illumination occurs away from the
region of interest, increasing the system size and weakening the SPP intensity.
Back-side illumination of subwavelength apertures in optically thick metal
films eliminates this problem but does not ensure a unique propagation
direction for the SPP. We propose a novel back-side slit-illumination method
based on drilling a periodic array of indentations at one side of the slit. We
demonstrate that the SPP running in the array direction can be suppressed, and
the one propagating in the opposite direction enhanced, providing localized
unidirectional SPP launching.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Zircon to monazite phase transition in CeVO4
X-ray diffraction and Raman-scattering measurements on cerium vanadate have
been performed up to 12 and 16 GPa, respectively. Experiments reveal that at
5.3 GPa the onset of a pressure-induced irreversible phase transition from the
zircon to the monazite structure. Beyond this pressure, diffraction peaks and
Raman-active modes of the monazite phase are measured. The zircon to monazite
transition in CeVO4 is distinctive among the other rare-earth orthovanadates.
We also observed softening of external translational Eg and internal B2g
bending modes. We attributed it to mechanical instabilities of zircon phase
against the pressure-induced distortion. We additionally report
lattice-dynamical and total-energy calculations which are in agreement with the
experimental results. Finally, the effect of non-hydrostatic stresses on the
structural sequence is studied and the equations of state of different phases
are reported.Comment: 45 pages, 8 figures, 8 table
