    Isobar-free neon isotope measurements of flux-fused potential reference minerals on a Helix-MC-Plus^(10K) mass spectrometer

    This work presents new analytical techniques for extraction and analysis of neon from a suite of different mineral phases, including quartz, pyroxene, hematite, apatite, zircon, topaz, and fluorite. Neon was quantitatively extracted at 1100 °C from all of these minerals using an in-vacuum lithium borate-flux fusion technique. Evolved neon was purified using a cryogenic method capable of separating Ne from He present in abundances ~8 orders of magnitude higher, typical of samples carrying nucleogenic/radiogenic noble gases. The purified neon was measured on a Helix-MC-Plus^(10K) mass spectrometer that permits isobar-free measurement of all three neon isotopes. When operated at its highest mass resolving power (MRP) of ~10,300, the shoulder representing solely ²²Ne on the low mass-side of the ²²Ne-CO₂⁺² doublet is wide enough to permit measurement of isobar free ²²Ne. Operating in this mode comes with the penalty of a 50% reduction in neon sensitivity. Coupled with a mathematical isobar-stripping method, this approach excludes 99.5% of the CO₂⁺² while still collecting >99% of the ²²Ne beam. Routine edge-centering on the dynamic CO₂⁺² peak prior to introduction of a sample permits rapid and robust relocation of the desired measure point in the mass spectrum. Cosmogenic ²¹Ne and ²²Ne concentrations obtained using these methods on the Cronus-A quartz and Cronus-P pyroxene international reference materials are in excellent agreement with previous work or expectations. Similarly, the concentration of nucleogenic ²¹Ne and ²²Ne in Durango apatite and the CIT hematite standard agree well with previous work. Durango apatite has notable heterogeneity in neon concentrations, consistent with previous observations of heterogeneous He, U and Th concentrations in this apatite. Nucleogenic neon concentrations are also presented for previously unstudied minerals including a Sri Lanka zircon (SLC), a topaz from the Imperial Topaz mine in Brazil (ITP1), and a fluorite (W-90) from New Hampshire. Taken together this set of potential reference minerals and the associated dataset provide a starting point for intercalibration among multiple mineral phases carrying ²¹Ne and ²²Ne of cosmogenic or nucleogenic origin

    Calculation of inviscid flow over shuttle-like vehicles at high angles of attack and comparisons with experimental data

    A computer code HALIS, designed to compute the three dimensional flow about shuttle like configurations at angles of attack greater than 25 deg, is described. Results from HALIS are compared where possible with an existing flow field code; such comparisons show excellent agreement. Also, HALIS results are compared with experimental pressure distributions on shuttle models over a wide range of angle of attack. These comparisons are excellent. It is demonstrated that the HALIS code can incorporate equilibrium air chemistry in flow field computations

    Structural evaluation of candidate designs for the large space telescope primary mirror

    Structural performance analyses were conducted on two candidate designs (Itek and Perkin-Elmer designs) for the large space telescope three-meter mirror. The mirror designs and the finite-element models used in the analyses evaluation are described. The results of the structural analyses for several different types of loading are presented in tabular and graphic forms. Several additional analyses are also reported: the evaluation of a mirror design concept proposed by the Boeing Co., a study of the global effects of local cell plate deflections, and an investigation of the fracture mechanics problems likely to occur with Cervit and ULE. Flexibility matrices were obtained for the Itek and Perkin-Elmer mirrors to be used in active figure control studies. Summary, conclusions, and recommendations are included

    Computer model calibration with large non-stationary spatial outputs: application to the calibration of a climate model

    Bayesian calibration of computer models tunes unknown input parameters by comparing outputs with observations. For model outputs that are distributed over space, this becomes computationally expensive because of the output size. To overcome this challenge, we employ a basis representation of the model outputs and observations: we match these decompositions to carry out the calibration efficiently. In the second step, we incorporate the non-stationary behaviour, in terms of spatial variations of both variance and correlations, in the calibration. We insert two integrated nested Laplace approximation-stochastic partial differential equation parameters into the calibration. A synthetic example and a climate model illustration highlight the benefits of our approach

    A comparative analysis of national media responses to the OECD survey of adult skills: policy making from the global to the local?

    OECD’s Programme of International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) is put forward as a landmark development in the lifelong monitoring and international comparison of education. PIAAC’s first round of the Survey of Adult Skills compared performance in Literacy, Numeracy and Problem Solving in Technology-Rich Environments across 24 countries. However, the translation of any OECD agenda into national policies is mediated by many actors including the media. This paper examines and compares how national media of Japan, England and France reported on the PIAAC results of their countries, and the extent to which these reports mirror key messages from the OECD’s Country Notes. It begins to trace how the OECD PIAAC agendas materialise into national policies. Although their role in this initial period was limited, we argue the roles of the media together with other policy actors must be monitored as they interact to shape possibilities for sustainable adult education policies

    Nuclear Model of Binding alpha-particles

    The model of binding alpha-particles in nuclei is suggested. It is shown good (with the accuracy of 1-2%) description of the experimental binding energies in light and medium nuclear systems.     Control of the persistent currents in two interacting quantum rings through the Coulomb interaction and inter-ring tunneling

    The persistent current in two vertically coupled quantum rings containing few electrons is studied. We find that the Coulomb interaction between the rings in the absence of tunneling affects the persistent current in each ring and the ground state configurations. Quantum tunneling between the rings alters significantly the ground state and the persistent current in the system.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    Study of the single body yawed-wing aircraft concept

    Areas relating to the development and improvement of the single-fuselage, yawed-wing transonic transport concept were investigated. These included: (1) developing an alternate configuration with a simplified engine installation;(2) determining a structural design speed placard that would allow the engine-airframe match for optimum airplane performance; and (3) conducting an aeroelastic stability and control analysis of the yawed-wing configuration with a flexible wing. A two-engine, single-fuselage, yawed-wing configuration was developed that achieved the Mach 1.2 design mission at 5560 km (3000 nmi) and payload of 18,140 kg (40,000 lb) with a gross weight of 217,700 kg (480,000 lb). This airplane was slightly heavier than the aft-integrated four-engine configuration that had been developed in a previous study. A modified structural design speed placard, which was determined, resulted in a 6% to 8% reduction in the gross weight of the yawed-wing configurations. The dynamic stability characteristics of the single-fuselage yawed-wing configuration were found to be very dependent on the magnitude of the pitch/roll coupling, the static longitudinal stability, and the dihedral effect
