    Spin-orbit mediated anisotropic spin interaction in interacting electron systems

    We investigate interactions between spins of strongly correlated electrons subject to the spin-orbit interaction. Our main finding is that of a novel, spin-orbit mediated anisotropic spin-spin coupling of the van der Waals type. Unlike the standard exchange, this interaction does not require the wave functions to overlap. We argue that this ferromagnetic interaction is important in the Wigner crystal state where the exchange processes are severely suppressed.     Theory of ultrafast quasiparticle dynamics in high-temperature superconductors: Pump fluence dependence

    We present a theory for the time-resolved optical spectroscopy of high-temperature superconductors at high excitation densities with strongly anisotropic electron-phonon coupling. A signature of the strong coupling between the out-of-plane, out-of-phase O buckling mode (B1gB_{1g}) and electronic states near the antinode is observed as a higher-energy peak in the time-resolved optical conductivity and Raman spectra, while no evidence of the strong coupling between the in-plane Cu-O breathing mode and nodal electronic states is observed. More interestingly, it is observed that under appropriate conditions of pump fluence, this signature exhibits a re-entrant behavior with time delay, following the fate of the superconducting condensate.Comment: 5 pages, 3 embedded eps figures, to appear in PR

    Climbing the Density Functional Ladder: Non-Empirical Meta-Generalized Gradient Approximation Designed for Molecules and Solids

    The electron density, its gradient, and the Kohn-Sham orbital kinetic energy density are the local ingredients of a meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA). We construct a meta-GGA density functional for the exchange-correlation energy that satisfies exact constraints without empirical parameters. The exchange and correlation terms respect {\it two} paradigms: one- or two-electron densities and slowly-varying densities, and so describe both molecules and solids with high accuracy, as shown by extensive numerical tests.     Identification of Epstein-Barr virus replication proteins in Burkitt’s lymphoma cells

    The working model to describe the mechanisms used to replicate the cancer-associated virus Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is partly derived from comparisons with other members of the Herpes virus family. Many genes within the EBV genome are homologous across the herpes virus family. Published transcriptome data for the EBV genome during its lytic replication cycle show extensive transcription, but the identification of the proteins is limited. We have taken a global proteomics approach to identify viral proteins that are expressed during the EBV lytic replication cycle. We combined an enrichment method to isolate cells undergoing EBV lytic replication with SILAC-labeling coupled to mass-spectrometry and identified viral and host proteins expressed during the OPEN ACCESS Pathogens 2015, 4 740 EBV lytic replication cycle. Amongst the most frequently identified viral proteins are two components of the DNA replication machinery, the single strand DNA binding protein BALF2, DNA polymerase accessory protein BMRF1 and both subunits of the viral ribonucleoside-diphosphate reductase enzyme (BORF2 and BaRF1). An additional 42 EBV lytic cycle proteins were also detected. This provides proteomic identification for many EBV lytic replication cycle proteins and also identifies post-translational modifications

    Exchange and Correlation in Open Systems of Fluctuating Electron Number

    While the exact total energy of a separated open system varies linearly as a function of average electron number between adjacent integers, the energy predicted by semi-local density functional approximations curves upward and the exact-exchange-only or Hartree-Fock energy downward. As a result, semi-local density functionals fail for separated open systems of fluctuating electron number, as in stretched molecular ions A2+_2^{+} and in solid transition metal oxides. We develop an exact-exchange theory and an exchange-hole sum rule that explain these failures and we propose a way to correct them via a local hybrid functional.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Nonempirical Density Functionals Investigated for Jellium: Spin-Polarized Surfaces, Spherical Clusters, and Bulk Linear Response

    Earlier tests show that the Tao-Perdew-Staroverov-Scuseria (TPSS) nonempirical meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) for the exchange-correlation energy yields more accurate surface energies than the local spin density (LSD) approximation for spin-unpolarized jellium. In this study, work functions and surface energies of a jellium metal in the presence of ``internal'' and external magnetic fields are calculated with LSD, Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) GGA, and TPSS meta-GGA and its predecessor, the nearly nonempirical Perdew-Kurth-Zupan-Blaha (PKZB) meta-GGA, using self-consistent LSD orbitals and densities. The results show that: (i) For normal bulk densities, the surface correlation energy is the same in TPSS as in PBE, as it should be since TPSS strives to represent a self-correlation correction to PBE; (ii) Normal surface density profiles can be scaled uniformly to the low-density or strong-interaction limit, and TPSS provides an estimate for that limit that is consistent with (but probably more accurate than) other estimates; (iii) For both normal and low densities, TPSS provides the same description of surface magnetism as PBE, suggesting that these approximations may be generally equivalent for magnetism. The energies of jellium spheres with up to 106 electrons are calculated using density functionals and compared to those obtained with Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo data, including our estimate for the fixed-node correction. Finally we calculate the linear response of bulk jellium using these density functionals, and find that not only LSD but also PBE GGA and TPSS meta-GGA yield a linear-response in good agreement with that of the Quantum Monte Carlo method, for wavevectors of the perturbing external potential up to twice the Fermi wavevector.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure

    A Non-Collinear Mixing Technique to Measure the Acoustic Nonlinearity Parameter of Adhesive Bond from Only One Side of the Sample

    The acoustic nonlinearity parameter (ANLP) of a material is often positively correlated with the damage in the material. Therefore, the ability to nondestructively measure the ANLP may enable the nondestructive characterization of the material’s remaining strength. In this work, we developed a non-collinear mixing technique to measure the ANLP of adhesive bonds. One of the most significant features of the new method is that it requires only one-side access to the adhesive bond being measured, which significantly increases it utility in field measurements. Specifically, the test sample considered in this study consists of two aluminum plates adhesively joined together through a commercial adhesive tape. The non-collinear wave mixing technique consists of generating a longitudinal wave and a shear wave by piezoelectric transmitters attached to the same surface of the sample under test. These waves are introduced into the sample in such an angle that they will mix at the adhesive bond region. Mixing of these two waves generates a shear wave that propagates back towards the surface where the two waves were generated. This mixing wave is then recorded by a shear wave receiver placed on the same surface where the longitudinal and shear wave transmitters are located. It was shown that amplitude of this mixing wave is proportional to the ANLP of the adhesive bond. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the newly developed technique, a freshly made adhesive sample was first measured using the non-collinear mixing technique to obtain the ANLP of the adhesive bond. This sample is then placed inside a thermal chamber for aging to change its ANLP. The sample was taken out the thermal chamber periodically to measure its ANLP. The measured results clearly show that the ANLP varies with aging time. Initially, the ANLP decreases with aging time, possibly due to further curing. Afterward, the ANLP begins to increase with aging time, likely due to aging induced damage in the polymer adhesive. To verify that the signals received from the shear wave receiver are indeed the mixing wave, the finite element method was used to simulate the wave motion in the test sample. The simulation results clearly show that the signals recorded by the shear wave receiver are indeed the desired mixing wave, whose amplitude is proportional to the ANLP of the adhesive bond

    Dimensionality of Business Ethics in China

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the ethical dimensions in China. It reviews the extant business ethics literature on China, collects data on ethical conduct from a large Chinese university, and analyzes the data to examine emerging trends. Design/methodology/approach – Factor analysis and multidimensional scaling (MDS) are applied to an established survey instrument after reliability is confirmed. Findings – Principal-components factor analysis uncovers six main factors. MDS further reduces the explanatory variables into four ethical dimensions, while increasing the number of useable observations. These four dimensions are then correlated with some demographic and psychographic variables. Results reveal four quadrants with different characteristics: Quadrant I “Unsympathetic, ethically challenged, self centered” have lower grade-point index (GPA); Quadrant II “Ethically challenged, other directed” have higher GPA, watch more TV, and are more likely to be female; Quadrant III “Community orientation, ethically centered” are more likely to be female with higher class ranking and Quadrant IV “Challenge avoidance, controlling, religious” are more likely to have a lower GPA and lower level of religiosity. Research limitations/implications – Inferences from this paper may be limited to the sample group. Further expansion of the paper may suggest additional insights. Originality/value – Ethics is often ignored in China\u27s business education. While well researched in the USA, this topic is rarely studied in China. This is of concern to businesses looking for managers in the Chinese market and for individuals and researchers who want a framework to better understand ethical dimensions of Chinese management

    Linear Continuum Mechanics for Quantum Many-Body Systems

    We develop the continuum mechanics of quantum many-body systems in the linear response regime. The basic variable of the theory is the displacement field, for which we derive a closed equation of motion under the assumption that the time-dependent wave function in a locally co-moving reference frame can be described as a geometric deformation of the ground-state wave function. We show that this equation of motion is exact for systems consisting of a single particle, and for all systems at sufficiently high frequency, and that it leads to an excitation spectrum that has the correct integrated strength.
