Synchronization and Diversity in Business Cycles: A Network Approach Applied to the European Union
This paper analyses synchronization in business cycles across the European Union (EU) since 1989. We include both old and new European Union members and countries which are currently negotiating accession, as well as potential European Union members. Our methodological approach is based on the correlation matrix and the networks within, which allows us to summarize the individual interaction and co-movement, while also capturing the existing heterogeneity of connectivity within the European economic system. The results indicate that the synchronization of the old EU countries remained stable until the current financial crisis. Additionally, the synchronization of the new and potential members has approached to the old EU members although we observe the existence of different synchronization levels and dynamics in output growth in single countries as well as in groups of countries. Some countries have achieved an important degree of co-movement (such as the Baltic Republics, Hungary, Slovenia and Iceland), while others have experienced reduced synchronization, or even desynchronization (such as Romania, Bulgaria and even Greece and Ireland).Business cycle synchronization, European Union countries, EU candidates, complex systems, network topology.
Measuring Globalization: A hierarchical network approach
This paper investigates the business cycle co-movement across countries and regions since the middle of the last century as a measure for quantifying the ongoing globalization process of the world economy. Our methodological approach is based on analysis of a correlation matrix and the networks it contains. Such an approach summarizes the interaction and interdependence of all elements and it represents a more accurate measure of the global interdependence involved in the economic system. Our results show (1) that the dynamics of globalization has been more driven by synchronization in regional growth patterns than by the synchronization of the world economy as a whole in contrast with other empirical works and (2) that world crisis periods increase dramatically the global co movement in the world economy.Globalization, regionalism, correlation matrix, clustering, synchronization
Co-movements in commodity prices: a note based on network analysis
This paper analyses co-movements in a wide group of commodity prices during the time period 1992-2010. Our methodological approach is based on the correlation matrix and the networks inside. Through this approach we are able to summarize global interaction and interdependence, capturing the existing heterogeneity in the degrees of synchronization between commodity prices. Our results produce two main findings: (a) we do not observe a persistent increase in the degree of co-movement of the commodity prices in our time sample, however from mid-2008 to the end of 2009 co-movements almost doubled when compared with the average correlation; (b) we observe three groups of commodities which have exhibited similar price dynamics (metals, oil and grains and oilseeds) and which have increased their degree of co-movement during the sampled period. Diaphragmatic paralysis, respiratory function, and postoperative pain after interscalene brachial plexus block with a reduced dose of 10 ml levobupivacaine 0.25% versus a 20 ml dose in patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery: study protocol for the randomized controlled double-blind Redole
Background: Arthroscopic shoulder surgery causes severe postoperative pain. An interscalene brachial plexus block provides adequate analgesia, but unintended spread of the local anesthetic administered may result in a phrenic nerve block, usually associated with a nonnegligible incidence of acute hemidiaphragmatic paralysis. The main purpose of this trial will be to analyze the incidence of hemidiaphragmatic paralysis ensuing after interscalene brachial plexus block in patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery administered a standard volume (20 ml) vs. a low volume (10 ml) of levobupivacaine 0.25%. Methods: This will be a prospective double-blind randomized controlled single-center two-arm comparative trial. Forty-eight patients will be included. The primary goal will be to ultrasonographically determine the incidence of hemidiaphragmatic paralysis by calculating the diaphragmatic thickness ratio in each group. The secondary goals will be to compare the two arms in terms of (1) decrease in forced vital capacity and (2) in forced expiratory volume at 1 s by spirometry; (3) decrease in diaphragmatic excursion by ultrasound; (4) 24-h total intravenous morphine consumption; (5) time to first opioid request of a patient-controlled analgesia pump; and (6) postoperative complications. Discussion: This trial will demonstrate that a low-volume interscalene brachial plexus block decreases hemidiaphragmatic paralysis following arthroscopic shoulder surgery according to spirometry and ultrasound measurements and does not provide inferior postoperative analgesia to the standard volume, as measured by opioid requirements. Circulating omentin concentration increases after weight loss
Omentin-1 is a novel adipokine expressed in visceral adipose tissue
and negatively associated with insulin resistance and obesity. We aimed to study
the effects of weight loss-induced improved insulin sensitivity on circulating
omentin concentrations. METHODS: Circulating omentin-1 (ELISA) concentration in
association with metabolic variables was measured in 35 obese subjects (18 men,
17 women) before and after hypocaloric weight loss. RESULTS: Baseline circulating
omentin-1 concentrations correlated negatively with BMI (r = -0.58, p < 0.001),
body weight (r = -0.35, p = 0.045), fat mass (r = -0.67, p < 0.001), circulating
leptin (r = -0.7, p < 0.001) and fasting insulin (r = -0.37, p = 0.03).
Circulating omentin-1 concentration increased significantly after weight loss
(from 44.9 +/- 9.02 to 53.41 +/- 8.8 ng/ml, p < 0.001). This increase in
circulating omentin after weight loss was associated with improved insulin
sensitivity (negatively associated with HOMA value and fasting insulin, r =
-0.42, p = 0.02 and r = -0.45, p = 0.01, respectively) and decreased BMI (r =
-0.54, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: As previously described with adiponectin,
circulating omentin-1 concentrations increase after weight loss-induced
improvement of insulin sensitivity
Albumin-induced apoptosis of tubular cells is modulated by BASP1
Albuminuria promotes tubular injury and cell death, and is associated with faster progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) to
end-stage renal disease. However, the molecular mechanisms regulating tubular cell death in response to albuminuria are not fully
understood. Brain abundant signal protein 1 (BASP1) was recently shown to mediate glucose-induced apoptosis in tubular cells.
We have studied the role of BASP1 in albumin-induced tubular cell death. BASP1 expression was studied in experimental
puromycin aminonucleoside-induced nephrotic syndrome in rats and in human nephrotic syndrome. The role of BASP1 in
albumin-induced apoptosis was studied in cultured human HK2 proximal tubular epithelial cells. Puromycin aminonucleoside
induced proteinuria and increased total kidney BASP1 mRNA and protein expression. Immunohistochemistry localized the
increased BASP1 to tubular cells. BASP1 expression colocalized with deoxynucleotidyl-transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end
labeling staining for apoptotic cells. Increased tubular BASP1 expression was observed in human proteinuric nephropathy by
immunohistochemistry, providing evidence for potential clinical relevance. In cultured tubular cells, albumin induced apoptosis
and increased BASP1 mRNA and protein expression at 6–48 h. Confocal microscopy localized the increased BASP1 expression
in albumin-treated cells mainly to the perinuclear area. A peripheral location near the cell membrane was more conspicuous in
albumin-treated apoptotic cells, where it colocalized with actin. Inhibition of BASP1 expression by a BASP1 siRNA protected from
albumin-induced apoptosis. In conclusion, albumin-induced apoptosis in tubular cells is BASP1-dependent. This information may
be used to design novel therapeutic approaches to slow CKD progression based on protection of tubular cells from the adverse

Adipogenesis Regulation and Endocrine Disruptors: Emerging Insights in Obesity

They are environmentally distributed as synthetic fertilizers, electronic waste, and several food additives that are part of the food chain. They can be considered as obesogenic compounds since they have the capacity to influence cellular events related to adipose tissue, altering lipid metabolism and adipogenesis processes. This review will present the latest scientific evidence of different EDs such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), heavy metals, "nonpersistent" phenolic compounds, triclosan, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and smoke-derived compounds (benzo -alpha-pyrene) and their influence on the differentiation processes towards adipocytes in both in vitro and in vivo models.https://www.hindawi.com/journals/bmri/2020/7453786/#copyrigh
Endometrial area of the blood flow as a marker of endometritis in equine
In this study, uterine blood flow area (BFA) has been evaluated for the first time using power Doppler ultrasound (PD) as a marker of endometritis in mares and jennies. The uterine BFA in healthy mares was greater in oestrus than in diestrus (p <.001). However, differences in endometrial blood flow between oestrus and diestrus were not observed in mares with endometritis. The uterine blood flow in healthy jennies is not affected by the oestrus cycle. Both species showed an increase in endometrial BFA in pathological uterine conditions compared to controls. BFA was a good marker of endometritis with an area under curve (AUC) (estrus:0.94 (p <.001) diestrus:0.98 (p <.001) in mares and AUC (0.91 (p <.0001) in jennies. The results of this preliminary study suggest that PD ultrasound in combination with computerized image analysis has the potential to be a very useful tool in the diagnosis of endometritis
Study of caveolin-1 gene expression in whole adipose tissue and its subfractions and during differentiation of human adipocytes
Caveolins are 21-24 kDa integral membrane proteins that serve as
scaffolds to recruit numerous signaling molecules. Specific subclasses of
caveolae carry out specific functions in cell metabolism. In particular,
triglycerides are synthesized at the site of fatty acid entry in one of these
caveolae classes. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: We studied the expression of caveolin-1
(CAV-1) gene in association with metabolic variables in 90 visceral and 55
subcutaneous adipose tissue samples from subjects with a wide range of fat mass,
in the stromovascular fraction (SVC) and isolated adipocytes, and during
differentiation of human adipocytes. RESULTS: CAV-1 gene expression was
significantly decreased in visceral adipose tissue (v-CAV-1) of obese subjects.
v-CAV-1 was positively associated with several lipogenic genes such as acetyl-coA
carboxylase (ACACA, r = 0.34, p = 0.004) and spot-14 (r = 0.33, p = 0.004). In
non-obese subjects v-CAV-1 also correlated with fatty acid synthase (FAS, r =
0.60, p < 0.0001). Subcutaneous (sc) adipose tissue (sc-CAV-1) gene expression
was not associated with these lipogenic factors when obese and non-obese subjects
were studied together. In obese subjects, however, sc-CAV-1 was associated with
fatty acid synthase (FAS, r = 0.36, p = 0.02), sterol regulatory element binding
protein-1c (SREBP-1c (r = 0.58, p < 0.0001), ACACA (r = 0.33, p = 0.03), spot-14
(r = 0.36, p = 0.02), PPAR-gamma co-activator-1 (PGC-1, r = 0.88, n = 19). In
these obese subjects, sc-CAV-1 was also associated with fasting triglycerides (r
= -0.50, p < 0.0001).CAV-1 expression in mature adipocytes was significantly
higher than in stromal vascular cells. CAV-1 gene expression in adipocytes from
subcutaneous adipose tissue (but not in adipocytes from visceral adipose tissue)
was significatively associated with fasting triglycerides. CAV-1 gene expression
did not change significantly during differentiation of human preadipocytes from
lean or obese subjects despite significant increase of FAS gene expression.
CONCLUSION: Decreased CAV-1 gene expression was simultaneously linked to
increased triglycerides and decreased lipogenic gene expression among obese
subjects, paralleling the observations of hypertriglyceridemia in CAV-1 knockout
mice. However, the regulation of CAV-1 gene expression seems independent of the
adipogenic program
