Comparison of bioactivities, binding properties and intra-follicular levels of bovine follistatins
Five isoforms of follistatin (FST) (Mr 31, 33, 35, 37, 41kDa) were purified from bovine follicular fluid (bFF). Comparison of their activin- and heparan sulphate proteoglycan (HSP)-binding properties and bio-potencies in neutralization of activin-A action in vitro revealed that all five isoforms bound activin-A, but with different affinities. Only the 31kDa isoform (FST-288) bound to HSP. FST-288 also showed the greatest biopotency with 35 and 41kDa isoforms being least potent. To determine whether bovine follicle development is associated with changing intrafollicular FST and activin profiles, we analyzed bFF from dominant (DF) and subordinate (SF) follicles collected at strategic times during a synchronized estrous cycle. Total FST, activin-A and activin-AB were measured by immunoassay while individual FST isoforms were quantified by immunoblotting. Follicle diameter was positively correlated with estrogen:progesterone ratio (r=0.56) in bFF but negatively correlated with activin-A (r=-0.34), activin-AB (r=-0.80) and ‘total’ FST (r=-0.70) levels. Follicle diameter was positively correlated with abundance of the 41 kDa isoform (r=0.59) but negatively correlated with abundance of 33 and 31 kDa isoforms (r=-0.56, -0.41). Both follicle status (DF vs SF) and cycle stage affected total FST, activin-A, activin-B levels while follicle status, but not cycle stage, affected abundance of 41, 37, 33 and 31kDa FST isoforms. Collectively, these findings indicate that intrafollicular FST isoforms that differ in their ability to bind and neutralise activins and associate with cell-surface proteoglycans, show divergent changes during follicle development. Enhanced FST production may have an important negative role, either directly or via inhibition of the positive effects of activins, on follicle growth and function during follicular waves

Effects of playing position, pitch location, opposition ability and team ability on the technical performance of elite soccer players in different score line states
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of playing position, pitch location, team ability and opposition ability on technical performance variables (pass, cross, corner, free kick accuracy) of English Premier League Soccer players in difference score line states. A validated automatic tracking system (Venatrack) was used to code player actions in real time for passing accuracy, cross accuracy, corner accuracy and free kick accuracy. In total 376 of the 380 games played during the 2011-12 English premier League season were recorded, resulting in activity profiles of 570 players and over 35'000 rows of data. These data were analysed using multi-level modelling. Multi-level regression revealed a "u" shaped association between passing accuracy and goal difference (GD) with greater accuracy occurring at extremes of GD e.g., when the score was either positive or negative. The same pattern was seen for corner accuracy away from home e.g., corner accuracy was lowest when the score was close with the lowest accuracy at extremes of GD. Although free kicks were not associated with GD, team ability, playing position and pitch location were found to predict accuracy. No temporal variables were found to predict cross accuracy. A number of score line effects were present across the temporal factors which should be considered by coaches and managers when preparing and selecting teams in order to maximise performance. The current study highlighted the need for more sensitive score line definitions in which to consider score line effects
Emulation of Condensed Fuel Flames Using a Burning Rate Emulator (BRE) in Microgravity
The Burning Rate Emulator (BRE) is a gaseous fuel burner developed to emulate the burning of condensed phase fuels. The current study details several tests at the NASA Glenn 5-s drop facility to test the BRE technique in microgravity conditions. The tests are conducted for two burner diameters, 25 mm and 50 mm respectively, with methane and ethylene as the fuels. The ambient pressure, oxygen content and fuel flow rate are additional parameters. The microgravity results exhibit a nominally hemispherical flame with decelerating growth and quasi-steady heat flux after about 5 seconds. The BRE burner was evaluated with a transient analysis to assess the extent of steady-state achieved. The burning rate and flame height recorded at the end of the drop are correlated using two steady-state purely diffusive models. A higher burning rate for the bigger burner as compared to theory indicates the significance of gas radiation. The effect of the ambient pressure and oxygen concentration on the heat of gasification are also examined
Study of temperature-growth interactions of entomopathogenic fungi with potential for control of Varroa destructor (Acari: Mesostigmata) using a nonlinear model of poikilotherm development
Aims: To investigate the thermal biology of entomopathogenic fungi being examined as potential microbial control agents of Varroa destructor , an ectoparasite of the European honey bee Apis mellifera . Methods and Results: Colony extension rates were measured at three temperatures (20, 30 and 35degreesC) for 41 isolates of entomopathogenic fungi. All of the isolates grew at 20 and 30degreesC but only 11 isolates grew at 35degreesC. Twenty-two isolates were then selected on the basis of appreciable growth at 30-35degreesC (the temperature range found within honey bee colonies) and/or infectivity to V. destructor , and their colony extension rates were measured at 10 temperatures (12.5-35degreesC). This data were then fitted to Schoolfield et al . [J Theor Biol (1981)88:719-731] re-formulation of the Sharpe and DeMichele [J Theor Biol (1977)64:649-670] model of poikilotherm development. Overall, this model accounted for 87.6-93.9% of the data variance. Eleven isolates exhibited growth above 35degreesC. The optimum temperatures for extension rate ranged from 22.9 to 31.2degreesC. Only three isolates exhibited temperature optima above 30degreesC. The super-optimum temperatures (temperature above the optimum at which the colony extension rate was 10% of the maximum rate) ranged from 31.9 to 43.2degreesC. Conclusions: The thermal requirements of the isolates examined against V. destructor are well matched to the temperatures in the broodless areas of honey bee colonies, and a proportion of isolates, should also be able to function within drone brood areas. Significance and Impact of the Study: Potential exists for the control of V. destructor with entomopathogenic fungi in honey bee colonies. The methods employed in this study could be utilized in the selection of isolates for microbial control prior to screening for infectivity and could help in predicting the activity of a fungal control agent of V. destructor under fluctuating temperature conditions

Multi-Decadal Decline of Mercury in the North Atlantic Atmosphere Explained by Changing Subsurface Seawater Concentrations
[1] We analyze 1977–2010 trends in atmospheric mercury (Hg) from 21 ship cruises over the North Atlantic (NA) and 15 over the South Atlantic (SA). We find a steep 1990–2009 decline of −0.046 ± 0.010 ng m−3 a−1 (−2.5% a−1) over the NA (steeper than at Northern Hemispheric land sites) but no significant decline over the SA. Surface water Hg0 measurements in the NA show a decline of −5.7% a−1since 1999, and limited subsurface ocean data show an ∼80% decline from 1980 to present. We use a coupled global atmosphere-ocean model to show that the decline in NA atmospheric concentrations can be explained by decreasing oceanic evasion from the NA driven by declining subsurface water Hg concentrations. We speculate that this large historical decline of Hg in the NA Ocean could have been caused by decreasing Hg inputs from rivers and wastewater and by changes in the oxidant chemistry of the atmospheric marine boundary layer.Engineering and Applied Science
Proteome-based plasma biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease is a common and devastating disease for which there is no readily available biomarker to aid diagnosis or to monitor disease progression. Biomarkers have been sought in CSF but no previous study has used two-dimensional gel electrophoresis coupled with mass spectrometry to seek biomarkers in peripheral tissue. We performed a case-control study of plasma using this proteomics approach to identify proteins that differ in the disease state relative to aged controls. For discovery-phase proteomics analysis, 50 people with Alzheimer's dementia were recruited through secondary services and 50 normal elderly controls through primary care. For validation purposes a total of 511 subjects with Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases and normal elderly controls were examined. Image analysis of the protein distribution of the gels alone identifies disease cases with 56% sensitivity and 80% specificity. Mass spectrometric analysis of the changes observed in two-dimensional electrophoresis identified a number of proteins previously implicated in the disease pathology, including complement factor H (CFH) precursor and α-2-macroglobulin (α- 2M). Using semi-quantitative immunoblotting, the elevation of CFH and α- 2M was shown to be specific for Alzheimer's disease and to correlate with disease severity although alternative assays would be necessary to improve sensitivity and specificity. These findings suggest that blood may be a rich source for biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease and that CFH, together with other proteins such as α- 2M may be a specific markers of this illness. © 2006 The Author(s).link_to_subscribed_fulltex
Gendered Representations of Male and Female Social Actors in Iranian Educational Materials
This research investigates the representations of gendered social actors within the subversionary discourse of equal educational opportunities for males and females in Iranian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) books. Using critical discourse analysis (CDA) as the theoretical framework, the authors blend van Leeuwen’s (Texts and practices: Readings in critical discourse analysis, Routledge, London, 2003) ‘Social Actor Network Model’ and Sunderland’s (Gendered discourses, Palgrave Macmillan, Hampshire, 2004) ‘Gendered Discourses Model’ in order to examine the depictions of male and female social actors within this gendered discourse. The gendered discourse of equal opportunities was buttressed by such representations within a tight perspective in proportion to gender ideologies prevailing in Iran. Resorting to CDA, we can claim that resistance against such gendered discourse in Iranian EFL textbooks militates against such gender norms. These representations of male and female social actors in school books are indicative of an all-encompassing education, reinforcing that the discourse of equal opportunities is yet to be realized in the education system of Iran

Neglect patients exhibit egocentric or allocentric neglect for the same stimulus contingent upon task demands
Hemispatial Neglect (HN) is a failure to allocate attention to a region of space opposite to where damage has occurred in the brain, usually the left side of space. It is widely documented that there are two types of neglect: egocentric neglect (neglect of information falling on the individual?s left side) and allocentric neglect (neglect of the left side of each object, regardless of the position of that object in relation to the individual). We set out to address whether neglect presentation could be modified from egocentric to allocentric through manipulating the task demands whilst keeping the physical stimulus constant by measuring the eye movement behaviour of a single group of neglect patients engaged in two different tasks (copying and tracing). Eye movements and behavioural data demonstrated that patients exhibited symptoms consistent with egocentric neglect in one task (tracing), and allocentric neglect in another task (copying), suggesting that task requirements may influence the nature of the neglect symptoms produced by the same individual. Different task demands may be able to explain differential neglect symptoms in some individuals
