The general gaugings of maximal d=9 supergravity
We use the embedding tensor method to construct the most general maximal
gauged/massive supergravity in d=9 dimensions and to determine its extended
field content. Only the 8 independent deformation parameters (embedding tensor
components, mass parameters etc.) identified by Bergshoeff \textit{et al.} (an
SL(2,R) triplet, two doublets and a singlet can be consistently introduced in
the theory, but their simultaneous use is subject to a number of quadratic
constraints. These constraints have to be kept and enforced because they cannot
be used to solve some deformation parameters in terms of the rest. The
deformation parameters are associated to the possible 8-forms of the theory,
and the constraints are associated to the 9-forms, all of them transforming in
the conjugate representations. We also give the field strengths and the gauge
and supersymmetry transformations for the electric fields in the most general
case. We compare these results with the predictions of the E11 approach,
finding that the latter predicts one additional doublet of 9-forms, analogously
to what happens in N=2, d=4,5,6 theories.Comment: Latex file, 43 pages, reference adde
Tensor hierarchies, Borcherds algebras and E11
Gauge deformations of maximal supergravity in D=11-n dimensions generically
give rise to a tensor hierarchy of p-form fields that transform in specific
representations of the global symmetry group E(n). We derive the formulas
defining the hierarchy from a Borcherds superalgebra corresponding to E(n).
This explains why the E(n) representations in the tensor hierarchies also
appear in the level decomposition of the Borcherds superalgebra. We show that
the indefinite Kac-Moody algebra E(11) can be used equivalently to determine
these representations, up to p=D, and for arbitrarily large p if E(11) is
replaced by E(r) with sufficiently large rank r.Comment: 22 pages. v2: Published version (except for a few minor typos

The Gaugings of Maximal D=6 Supergravity
We construct the most general gaugings of the maximal D=6 supergravity. The
theory is (2,2) supersymmetric, and possesses an on-shell SO(5,5) duality
symmetry which plays a key role in determining its couplings. The field content
includes 16 vector fields that carry a chiral spinor representation of the
duality group. We utilize the embedding tensor method which determines the
appropriate combinations of these vectors that participate in gauging of a
suitable subgroup of SO(5,5). The construction also introduces the magnetic
duals of the 5 two-form potentials and 16 vector fields.Comment: 34 pages, latex, reference added, typo's corrected and minor

The Tensor Hierarchies of Pure N=2,d=4,5,6 Supergravities
We study the supersymmetric tensor hierarchy of pure (gauged) N=2,d=4,5,6
supergravity and compare them with those of the pure, ungauged, theories
(worked out by Gomis and Roest for d=5) and the predictions of the Kac-Moody
approach made by Kleinschmidt and Roest. We find complete agreement in the
ungauged case but we also find that, after gauging, new Stueckelberg symmetries
reduce the number of independent "physical" top-forms. The analysis has to be
performed to all orders in fermion fields.
We discuss the construction of the worldvolume effective actions for the
p-branes which are charged with respect to the (p+1)-form potentials and the
relations between the tensor hierarchies and p-branes upon dimensional
reduction.Comment: LaTeX2e file, 20 pages, 1 figure Results refined by extension of the

Strong Couplings of X(3872)_{J=1,2} and a New Look at J/psi Suppression in Heavy Ion Collisions
We define and compute from data the strong couplings of the X(3872) with both
of the possible quantum numbers assignments J^{PC}=1^{++},2^{-+}. We use these
to compute cross sections for J/psi resonance scattering into D Dbar*. As an
application of the results obtained we revise the calculation of the J/psi
absorption in a hot hadron gas to confront with recent RHIC observations in
Au-Au collisions.Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures, 4 table
Electric/magnetic duality for chiral gauge theories with anomaly cancellation
We show that 4D gauge theories with Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation and
possible generalized Chern-Simons terms admit a formulation that is manifestly
covariant with respect to electric/magnetic duality transformations. This
generalizes previous work on the symplectically covariant formulation of
anomaly-free gauge theories as they typically occur in extended supergravity,
and now also includes general theories with (pseudo-)anomalous gauge
interactions as they may occur in global or local N=1 supersymmetry. This
generalization is achieved by relaxing the linear constraint on the embedding
tensor so as to allow for a symmetric 3-tensor related to electric and/or
magnetic quantum anomalies in these theories. Apart from electric and magnetic
gauge fields, the resulting Lagrangians also feature two-form fields and can
accommodate various unusual duality frames as they often appear, e.g., in
string compactifications with background fluxes.Comment: 37 pages; v2: typos corrected and 1 reference adde
N=2 Supersymmetric Scalar-Tensor Couplings
We determine the general coupling of a system of scalars and antisymmetric
tensors, with at most two derivatives and undeformed gauge transformations, for
both rigid and local N=2 supersymmetry in four-dimensional spacetime. Our
results cover interactions of hyper, tensor and double-tensor multiplets and
apply among others to Calabi-Yau threefold compactifications of Type II
supergravities. As an example, we give the complete Lagrangian and
supersymmetry transformation rules of the double-tensor multiplet dual to the
universal hypermultiplet.Comment: 23 pages, LaTeX2e with amsmath.sty; v2: corrected typos and added

Gauge Theories, Duality Relations and the Tensor Hierarchy
We compute the complete 3- and 4-dimensional tensor hierarchies, i.e. sets of
p-form fields, with , which realize an off-shell algebra of
bosonic gauge transformations. We show how these tensor hierarchies can be put
on-shell by introducing a set of duality relations, thereby introducing
additional scalars and a metric tensor. These so-called duality hierarchies
encode the equations of motion of the bosonic part of the most general gauged
supergravity theories in those dimensions, including the (projected) scalar
equations of motion. We construct gauge-invariant actions that include all the
fields in the tensor hierarchies. We elucidate the relation between the gauge
transformations of the p-form fields in the action and those of the same fields
in the tensor hierarchy.Comment: 48 pages, v2: number of clarifications, ref. added, to appear in JHE
A mid-IR interferometric survey with MIDI/VLTI: resolving the second-generation protoplanetary disks around post-AGB binaries
We present a mid-IR interferometric survey of the circumstellar environment
of a specific class of post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) binaries. For
this class the presence of a compact dusty disk has been postulated on the
basis of various spatially unresolved measurements. Our interferometric survey
was performed with the MIDI instrument on the VLTI. In total 19 different
systems were observed using variable baseline configurations. Combining all the
visibilities at a single wavelength at 10.7 micron, we fitted two parametric
models to the data: a uniform disk (UD) and a ring model mimicking a
temperature gradient. We compared our observables of the whole sample, with
synthetic data computed from a grid of radiative transfer models of passively
irradiated disks in hydrostatic equilibrium. These models are computed with a
Monte Carlo code that has been widely applied to describe the structure of
protoplanetary disks around young stellar objects (YSO). The spatially resolved
observations show that the majority of our targets cluster closely together in
the distance-independent size-colour diagram, and have extremely compact N-band
emission regions. The typical uniform disk diameter of the N-band emission
region is about 40 mass which corresponds to a typical brightness temperature
of 400-600~K. The resolved objects display very similar characteristics in the
interferometric observables and in the spectral energy distributions.
Therefore, the physical properties of the disks around our targets must be
similar. The grid of protoplanetary disk models covers very well the observed
objects. Much like for young stars, the spatially resolved N-band emission
region is determined by the hot inner rim of the disk. Continued comparisons
between post-AGB and protoplanetary disks will help to understand grain growth
and disk evolution processes,Comment: 30 pages, 21 figures, in press in Astronomy and Astrophysic
Anti-de Sitter Supersymmetry
We give a pedagogical introduction to certain aspects of supersymmetric field
theories in anti-de Sitter space. Among them are the presence of masslike terms
in massless wave equations, irreducible unitary representations and the
phenomenon of multiplet shortening.Comment: Lectures presented by B. de Wit at the Winter School of Theoretical
