    Mostramos el trabajo realizado con alumnos de 4º curso del grado de maestro de educación primaria de la Universitat de Vic, para la enseñanza de conceptos fundamentales acerca de la luz. En particular, el mero hecho de la propagación de la luz, del que se suele dar por descontado que será fácilmente asimilado, se muestra en la realidad como un aspecto difícil de ser comprendido plenamente: la invisibilidad de la luz, su velocidad extremadamente alta y los preconceptos de los alumnos, hacen este tema mucho más difícil de lo que podríamos esperar, tanto su comprensión como su enseñanza. Dentro de una asignatura semestral, hemos creado una secuencia de experiencias razonadas para conseguir un aprendizaje gradual y comprensivo de algunos conceptos básicos sobre la luz.     Estimating the incidence of equine viral arteritis and the sensitivity of its surveillance in the French breeding stock

    Equine viral arteritis (EVA) may have serious economic impact on the equine industry. For this reason, it is monitored in many countries, especially in breeding stock, to avoid its spread during breeding activities. In France, surveillance is mainly based on serological tests, since mares are not vaccinated, but difficulties in interpreting certain series of results may impair the estimation of the number of outbreaks. In this study, we propose specific rules for identifying seroconversion in order to estimate the number of outbreaks that were detected by the breeding stock surveillance component (BSSC) in France between 2006 and 2013. A consensus among multidisciplinary experts was reached to consider seroconversion as a change in antibody titer from negative to at least 32, or as an eight-fold or greater increase in antibody level. Using these rules, 239 cases and 177 outbreaks were identified. Subsequently, we calculated the BSSC's sensitivity as the ratio of the number of detected outbreaks to the total number of outbreaks that occurred in breeding stock (including unreported outbreaks) estimated using a capture-recapture model. The total number of outbreaks was estimated at 215 (95% credible interval 195-249) and the surveillance sensitivity at 82% (CrI95% 71-91). Our results confirm EVA circulation in French breeding stock, show that neutralizing antibodies can persist up to eight years in naturally infected mares and suggest that certain mares have been reinfected. This study shows that the sensitivity of the BSSC is relatively high and supports its relevance to prevent the disease spreading through mating

    Introducción. Las complicaciones cardiológicas son la causa más frecuente de mortalidad en el estado epiléptico. La miocardiopatía de Takotsubo es una entidad descrita recientemente, que puede aparecer en numerosas emergencias médicas, entre ellas el estado epiléptico. Caso clínico. Se presenta un caso de miocardiopatía de Takotsubo en el contexto de un estado epiléptico y se revisan casos similares descritos en la literatura científica, especialmente la semiología y etiología de las crisis epilépticas, los datos epidemiológicos de los enfermos, las alteraciones en el electrocardiograma y las complicaciones ocurridas. La paciente, una mujer de 43 años, se recuperó por completo tanto cardiológica como neurológicamente, y no tuvo recurrencias en un año de seguimiento. Conclusión. La miocardiopatía de Takotsubo es una complicación grave y tratable que puede ocurrir en el estado epilépticoIntroduction. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a recently reported condition that can appear in a number of medical emergencies, including epileptic status. Case report. We present a case of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy within the context of an epileptic status and we also review similar cases reported in the literature. Special attention is given to the semiology and aetiology of the epileptic seizures, patients’ epidemiological data, the alterations noted in the electrocardiogram and the complications that occurred. The patient, a 43-year-old female, recovered completely both cardiologically and neurologically, and did not suffer any relapses during the one-year follow-up. Conclusion.     Bio-based substances from urban waste as auxiliaries for solar photo-Fenton treatment under mild conditions: optimization of operational variables

    The use of soluble bio-based organic substances (SBO) obtained from urban wastes to expand the pH region where the photo-Fenton process can be applied has been investigated in this study. For this purpose, a mixture of six pollutants, namely acetaminophen, carbamazepine, amoxicillin, acetamiprid, clofibric acid and caffeine, at an initial concentration of 5 mg L−1 each, has been employed. Surface response methodology, based on the Doehlert matrix, has shown to be a useful tool to determine the effect of pH (in the range 3–7), concentration of SBO (15–25 mg L−1) and iron (2–6 mg L−1) on the performance of the photodegradation of the studied pollutants, measured by their half-life. Results indicate that, at high SBO concentration, the optimum pH shifts in most cases to a higher value (between 3 and 4) and that a significant loss of efficiency of the process was only observed at pH values above 5. An iron concentration of 4–5 mg L−1 and an amount of SBO of 19–22 mg L−1 have been determined to be the optimal conditions for the degradation of most of the studied pollutants at pH = 5.Instituto de Investigaciones Fisicoquímicas Teóricas y Aplicada

    Involvement of lipid rafts in the localization and dysfunction effect of the antitumor ether phospholipid edelfosine in mitochondria

The synthetic antitumor alkyl-lysophospholipid analog edelfosine (1-O-octadecyl-2-O-methyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphocholine) has been reported to target lipid rafts. Here, we have found that edelfosine induced loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and apoptosis in human cervical carcinoma HeLa cells, both responses being abrogated by Bcl-xL overexpression. We synthesized a number of new fluorescent edelfosine analogs, which preserved the proapoptotic activity of the parent drug, and colocalized with mitochondria in HeLa cells. Edelfosine induced swelling in isolated mitochondria, indicating an increase in mitochondrial membrane permeability. This mitochondrial swelling was independent of reactive oxygen species generation. A structurally related inactive analog was unable to promote mitochondrial swelling, highlighting the importance of edelfosine molecular structure in its effect on mitochondria. Raft disruption inhibited mitochondrial localization of the drug in cells and edelfosine-induced swelling in isolated mitochondria. Edelfosine promoted a redistribution of lipid rafts from the plasma membrane to mitochondria, suggesting a raft-mediated link between plasma membrane and mitochondria. Our data suggest that direct interaction of edelfosine with mitochondria eventually leads to mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis.
