Crossover in the nature of the metallic phases in the perovskite-type RNiO_3
We have measured the photoemission spectra of NdSmNiO,
where the metal-insulator transition and the N\'{e}el ordering occur at the
same temperature for and the metal-insulator transition
temperature () is higher than the N\'{e}el temperature for . For , the spectral intensity at the Fermi level is high in the
metallic phase above and gradually decreases with cooling in the
insulating phase below while for it shows a pseudogap-like
behavior above and further diminishes below . The results
clearly establish that there is a sharp change in the nature of the electronic
correlations in the middle () of the metallic phase of the

Self-organization of ultrasound in viscous fluids
We report the theoretical and experimental demonstration of pattern formation
in acoustics. The system is an acoustic resonator containing a viscous fluid.
When the system is driven by an external periodic force, the ultrasonic field
inside the cavity experiences different pattern-forming instabilities leading
to the emergence of periodic structures. The system is also shown to possess
bistable regimes, in which localized states of the ultrasonic field develop.
The thermal nonlinearity in the viscous fluid, together with the
far-from-equilibrium conditions, are is the responsible of the observed
effects
Molecular prototypes for spin-based CNOT quantum gates
We show that a chemically engineered structural asymmetry in [Tb2] molecular
clusters renders the two weakly coupled Tb3+ spin qubits magnetically
inequivalent. The magnetic energy level spectrum of these molecules meets then
all conditions needed to realize a universal CNOT quantum gate.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Friedel Oscillations in Relativistic Nuclear Matter
We calculate the low-momentum N-N effective potential obtained in the OBE
approximation, inside a nuclear plasma at finite temperature, as described by
the relativistic - model. We analyze the screening effects
on the attractive part of the potential in the intermediate range as density or
temperature increase. In the long range the potential shows Friedel-like
oscillations instead of the usual exponential damping. These oscillations arise
from the sharp edge of the Fermi surface and should be encountered in any

On the existence of a compact generator on the derived category of a noetherian formal scheme
In this paper, we prove that for a noetherian formal scheme X, its derived
category of sheaves of modules with quasi-coherent torsion homologies D_qct(X)
is generated by a single compact object. In an appendix we prove that the
category of compact objects in D_qct(X) is skeletally small.Comment: 13 page
Monte Carlo determination of the phase diagram of the double-exchange model
We study the phase diagram of the double exchange model, with antiferromagnetic interactions, in a cubic lattice both at zero and finite temperature. There is a rich variety of magnetic phases, combined with regions where phase separation takes place. We identify phases, intrinsic to the cubic lattice, which are stable for realistic values of the interactions and dopings. Some of these phases break chiral symmetry, leading to unusual features
Microplastics increase susceptibility of amphibian larvae to the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis.
Microplastics (MPs), a new class of pollutants that pose a threat to aquatic biodiversity, are of increasing global concern. In tandem, the amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) causing the disease chytridiomycosis is emerging worldwide as a major stressor to amphibians. We here assess whether synergies exist between this infectious disease and MP pollution by mimicking natural contact of a highly susceptible species (midwife toads, Alytes obstetricans) with a Bd-infected reservoir species (fire salamanders, Salamandra salamandra) in the presence and absence of MPs. We found that MP ingestion increases the burden of infection by Bd in a dose-dependent manner. However, MPs accumulated to a greater extent in amphibians that were not exposed to Bd, likely due to Bd-damaged tadpole mouthparts interfering with MP ingestion. Our experimental approach showed compelling interactions between two emergent processes, chytridiomycosis and MP pollution, necessitating further research into potential synergies between these biotic and abiotic threats to amphibians
Business computing - A shared curriculum proposal for the spanish-portuguese border under the auspices of the new european higher education area
The Bologna Declaration is leading to a change of paradigm in the context of higher education in many countries of the European Community; it has a significant impact at the level of curriculum and learning models. Therefore, any reflection and decision work on the processes of teaching/learning imposes the curricular reformulation of higher courses in an innovating way, supported by new references and assumptions. In the context of a project financed by European Community program Interreg III A, we have created a workgroup to o propose the reformulation of several courses that belong to Business Computing, from ESTiG-Portugal and from ESPZ-Spain, in an attempt to create harmony between both study plans, considering the socio-economic specific context of the border region between Braganca (Portugal) and Zamora (Spain). This article intends to describe a case-study related to the work done to achieve a curriculum for Business Computing; it describes the changes due to the recent recommendations of Bologna and governmental reflections of Portugal and Spain.This study was partly financed by the European Union with INTERREG III A funds
