The main inorganic arsenic species present in natural waters are arsenate (oxidation state V) and arsenite ions (oxidation state III). Arsenite is more toxic and mobile than arsenate. Therefore, it is important the development of new materials for analysis and control of these toxic species. This research proves that polymer-metal composite electrode materials synthesized by incorporation of Pt-0 and Pd-0 nanoparticles into a poly(pyrrole-ferrocenyl alkylammonium) matrix present electrocatalytic properties towards the oxidation of arsenite to arsenate. The polymer films displayed a stable electrochemical response in aqueous solution. However, when the polymer film modified electrode were transferred to aqueous solution in presence of arsenite anions, the CV curves for polymer films were deeply modified by the decrease in the electroactivity of the film. It can be concluded that the cationic polymer films present a strong affinity toward arsenite anions. The composite films containing Pt-0 or Pd-0 showed catalytic activity towards oxidation of As(III) to As(V) due to the presence of metal catalyst particles into the polymer films.http://ref.scielo.org/dgdvx

    Pycnodysostosis with Epilepsy in a Malawian patient: A case report

    Background: Pycnodysostosis is a very rare genetic disease resulting from deletion the short arm of one of the group – G chromosomes leading to deficiency of Cathepsin –K, a cysteine protease needed for proper functioning of Osteoclasts to resorb and remodel bone. Unlike many skeletal dysplasias, it is lysosomal enzyme defect and it is inherited in a typical autosomal recessive mode. Patients present with repeated fractures due to brittle bone as well as multiple other health problems. World wide extremely few cases have been reported. This presentation therefore is aimed at documenting an occurrence of a very rare disease from Blantyre, Malawi. We hope that this report creates awareness among clinicians in dealing with some 200 various types of skeletal dysplasias, and the diagnosis should be considered when evaluating patients with strikingly short stature. This is a typical case description of the syndrome, including clinical approach and radiological features of a patient seen at College of Medicine, Queen Elisabeth Central Hospital (QECH), in January 2009.Case report: A 38 years old Malawian male with dark African complexion presented to QECH with a left side combined supracondylar and olecranon fracture which he had sustained following a simple twisting injury. It was the 7th fracture in our patient’s life. He is a known epileptic on medication and had poor performance at school. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of the fracture was successfully done. The many clinical, hematological and radiological findings seen in our patient were consistent with a diagnosis of Pycnodysostosis.Conclusion: This may be the first case report of Pycnodysostosis with seizure from Africa. Increased clinical awareness and a systematic approach (algorism) to a very rare disease can lead to a reasonable level of accuracy in making diagnosis in set-ups lacking genetic or molecular methods of syndrome investigation

    The measurement of household socio-economic position in tuberculosis prevalence surveys: a sensitivity analysis.

    OBJECTIVE: To assess the robustness of socio-economic inequalities in tuberculosis (TB) prevalence surveys. DESIGN: Data were drawn from the TB prevalence survey conducted in Lusaka Province, Zambia, in 2005-2006. We compared TB socio-economic inequalities measured through an asset-based index (Index 0) using principal component analysis (PCA) with those observed using three alternative indices: Index 1 and Index 2 accounted respectively for the biases resulting from the inclusion of urban assets and food-related variables in Index 0. Index 3 was built using regression-based analysis instead of PCA to account for the effect of using a different assets weighting strategy. RESULTS: Household socio-economic position (SEP) was significantly associated with prevalent TB, regardless of the index used; however, the magnitude of inequalities did vary across indices. A strong association was found for Index 2, suggesting that the exclusion of food-related variables did not reduce the extent of association between SEP and prevalent TB. The weakest association was found for Index 1, indicating that the exclusion of urban assets did not lead to higher extent of TB inequalities. CONCLUSION: TB socio-economic inequalities seem to be robust to the choice of SEP indicator. The epidemiological meaning of the different extent of TB inequalities is unclear. Further studies are needed to confirm our conclusions

    Distribution of satellite galaxies in high redshift groups

    We use galaxy groups at redshifts between 0.4 and 1.0 selected from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) to study the color-morphological properties of satellite galaxies, and investigate possible alignment between the distribution of the satellites and the orientation of their central galaxy. We confirm the bimodal color and morphological type distribution for satellite galaxies at this redshift range: the red and blue classes corresponds to the early and late morphological types respectively, and the early-type satellites are on average brighter than the late-type ones. Furthermore, there is a {\it morphological conformity} between the central and satellite galaxies: the fraction of early-type satellites in groups with an early-type central is higher than those with a late-type central galaxy. This effect is stronger at smaller separations from the central galaxy. We find a marginally significant signal of alignment between the major axis of the early-type central galaxy and its satellite system, while for the late-type centrals no significant alignment signal is found.     Electroabsorption enhancement in disordered, strained InGaAs/GaAs quantum well

    The results of modeling the application of an external electric field to disordered, strained InGaAs/GaAs single quantum well are presented. An error function profile is used to model the constituent atoms composition after interdiffusion. Results indicate that the exciton Stark shift in the disordered quantum well is greater than in the as-grown 10 nm wide In0.2Ga0.8As well, and that the change in electroabsorption near the fundamental exciton absorption peak is enhanced by 30% in the disordered quantum well for a 30 kV/cm electric field applied perpendicular to the well. These results may be used to achieve optical modulators with improved performance characteristics in strained quantum well structures. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

    Feeling of knowing and restudy choices

    Feeling-of-knowing judgments (FOK-Js) reflect people’s confidence that they would be able to recognize a currently unrecallable item. Although much research has been devoted to the factors determining the magnitude and accuracy of FOK-Js, much less work has addressed the issue of whether FOK-Js are related to any form of metacognitive control over memory processes. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that FOK-Js are related to participants’ choices of which unrecallable items should be restudied. In three experiments, we showed that participants tend to choose for restudy items with high FOK-Js, both when they are explicitly asked to choose for restudy items that can be mastered in the restudy session (Exps. 1a and 2) and when such specific instructions are omitted (Exp. 1b). The study further demonstrated that increasing FOK-Js via priming cues affects restudy choices, even though it does not affect recall directly. Finally, Experiment 2 showed the strategy of restudying unrecalled items with high FOK-Js to be adaptive, because the efficacy of restudy is greater for these items than for items with low FOK-Js. Altogether, the present findings underscore an important role of FOK-Js for the metacognitive control of study operations

    Antihypertensive drug class and dyslipidemia: risk association among Chinese patients with uncomplicated hypertension

    Factors associated with dyslipidemia in Chinese patients with uncomplicated hypertension were investigated in 1,139 patients newly prescribed a single antihypertensive drug in the public primary healthcare setting in Hong Kong, where their fasting lipid profiles were measured 4 to 16 weeks after the first prescription. Multivariate logistic regression showed that thiazide users were more likely (OR 3.67, 95% C.I. 1.13, 11.88, p=0.030) to have adverse (> 6.2mmol/l) total cholesterol (TC) compared with drugs acting on the renin angiotensin system (RAS), but the absolute difference in mean TC between thiazide users and all patients was small ( 0.14 mmol/l), while advanced age and male gender were also associated with some aspects of dyslipidemia. Clinicians should be aware of the increased risk of dyslipidemia in these groups, but the mild dyslipidemic profile associated with thiazides should not in itself deter its use as a possible first-line antihypertensive agent among Chinese patients

    Adaptive Optics for Astronomy

    Adaptive Optics is a prime example of how progress in observational astronomy can be driven by technological developments. At many observatories it is now considered to be part of a standard instrumentation suite, enabling ground-based telescopes to reach the diffraction limit and thus providing spatial resolution superior to that achievable from space with current or planned satellites. In this review we consider adaptive optics from the astrophysical perspective. We show that adaptive optics has led to important advances in our understanding of a multitude of astrophysical processes, and describe how the requirements from science applications are now driving the development of the next generation of novel adaptive optics techniques.Comment: to appear in ARA&A vol 50, 201
