Characterization of Selected Nineteenth-Century Southern Ontario Domestic Earthenwares by Chemical Analysis
The elemental analysis of the glaze from domestic earthenwares at four kilns, including that of the David Burns Pottery, has been carried out in an attempt to establish an identification scheme for each pottery. No clear-cut identification for each of the four groups was found, although it seems possible to distinguish between glazed pottery from the David Burns and the Streetsville kilns and between pottery from the New Hamburg and the Egmondville kilns, on the basis of specific elemental concentrations.

L'article présente les résultats d'une analyse des composants de la glaçure de faïences provenant de quatre fours différents, dont celui de la David Burns Pottery. Cette analyse avait pour but d'établir une méthode d'identification pour chaque sorte de poterie. Les auteurs rapportent que les résultats ne permettent pas de délimiter avec précision chacun des quatre groupes, même s'il semble possible défaire des distinctions entre la poterie à glaçure provenant des fours de David Burns et de Streetsville et entre la poterie des fours de New Hamburg et d'Egmondville d'après la concentration particulière des composants
Knots, Braids and Hedgehogs from the Eikonal Equation
The complex eikonal equation in the three space dimensions is considered. We
show that apart from the recently found torus knots this equation can also
generate other topological configurations with a non-trivial value of the
index: braided open strings as well as hedgehogs. In particular,
cylindric strings i.e. string solutions located on a cylinder with a constant
radius are found. Moreover, solutions describing strings lying on an arbitrary
surface topologically equivalent to cylinder are presented. We discus them in
the context of the eikonal knots. The physical importance of the results
originates in the fact that the eikonal knots have been recently used to
approximate the Faddeev-Niemi hopfions.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Chandra X-Ray Spectroscopy Of The Very Early O Supergiant HD 93129A: Constraints On Wind Shocks And The Mass-Loss Rate
We present an analysis of both the resolved X-ray emission-line profiles and the broad-band X-ray spectrum of the O-2 If* star HD 93129A, measured with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer ( HETGS). This star is among the earliest and most massive stars in the Galaxy, and provides a test of the embedded wind-shock scenario in a very dense and powerful wind. A major new result is that continuum absorption by the dense wind is the primary cause of the hardness of the observed X-ray spectrum, while intrinsically hard emission from colliding wind shocks contributes less than 10 per cent of the X-ray flux. We find results consistent with the predictions of numerical simulations of the line-driving instability, including line broadening indicating an onset radius of X-ray emission of several tenths of R-*. Helium-like forbidden-to-intercombination line ratios are consistent with this onset radius, and inconsistent with being formed in a wind-collision interface with the star\u27s closest visual companion at a distance of 100 au. The broad-band X-ray spectrum is fitted with a dominant emission temperature of just kT = 0.6 keV along with significant wind absorption. The broad-band wind absorption and the line profiles provide two independent measurements of the wind mass-loss rate:. M = 5.2(-1.5)(+1.8) x 10(-6) and 6.8(-2.2)(+2.8) x 10(-6) M-circle dot yr(-1), respectively. This is the first consistent modelling of the X-ray line-profile shapes and broad-band X-ray spectral energy distribution in a massive star, and represents a reduction of a factor of 3-4 compared to the standard H alpha mass-loss rate that assumes a smooth wind
Developmental Defects Mediated by the P1/HC-Pro Potyviral Silencing Suppressor Are Not Due to Misregulation of AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR 8
Plant viral suppressors of RNA silencing induce developmental defects similar to those caused by mutations in genes involved in the microRNA pathway. A recent report has attributed viral suppressor-mediated developmental defects to up-regulation of AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR 8 (ARF8), a target of miR167. The key piece of evidence was that the developmental defects in transgenic Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) expressing viral suppressors were greatly alleviated in the F1 progeny of a cross with plants carrying the arf8-6 mutation. Arf8-6 is a SALK line T-DNA insertion mutant, a class of mutations prone to inducing transcriptional silencing of transgenes expressed from the 35S promoter. We have reinvestigated the role of ARF8 in viral suppressor-mediated developmental defects, using two independent arf8 mutations and the P1/HC-Pro potyviral suppressor of silencing. Progeny of a cross between P1/HC-Pro transgenic Arabidopsis and the arf8-6 T-DNA insertion mutant showed little effect on the P1/HC-Pro phenotype in the F1 generation, but almost all arf8-6/P1/HC-Pro progeny had lost the phenotype in the F2 generation. However, the loss of phenotype in the F2 generation was not correlated with the number of functional copies of the ARF8 gene. Instead, it reflected transcriptional silencing of the P1/HC-Pro transgene, as evidenced by a pronounced decrease in P1/HC-Pro mRNA and the appearance of 35S promoter small interfering RNAs. Furthermore, an independent loss-of-function point mutation, Arf8-8, had no detectable effects on P1/HC-Pro phenotype in either the F1 or F2 generations. Drone Measurements of Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Acquired with a Low-Weight DFOV Spectrometer System
Solar induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) emitted from plant canopies is now retrievable from space. In addition, SIF is now also routinely measured from fixed tower platforms. However there is a scale gap between temporally continuous tower measurements and spatially coarse satellite retrievals that is now being bridged by drone technology. Drone retrievals of SIF can be used to help unravel the structural and species component dependencies that occur across space on the scale of meters in heterogeneous vegetation types. Also when flown at sufficient altitude, drones can be used to simulate, and potentially validate satellite retrievals of SIF. We flew a dual field of view spectrometer system, the Piccolo doppio, above a boreal forest with the aim of retrieving SIF. Our flights were designed to assess both spatial heterogeneity of SIF driven by changes in vegetation cover type and to simulate satellite pixels by flying at a relatively high altitude.Peer reviewe
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey. IX. Estimating the Efficiency of Galaxy Formation on the Lowest-Mass Scales
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey has recently determined the
luminosity function of galaxies in the core of the Virgo cluster down to
unprecedented magnitude and surface brightness limits. Comparing simulations of
cluster formation to the derived central stellar mass function, we attempt to
estimate the stellar-to-halo-mass ratio (SHMR) for dwarf galaxies, as it would
have been before they fell into the cluster. This approach ignores several
details and complications, e.g., the contribution of ongoing star formation to
the present-day stellar mass of cluster members, and the effects of adiabatic
contraction and/or violent feedback on the subhalo and cluster potentials. The
final results are startlingly simple, however; we find that the trends in the
SHMR determined previously for bright galaxies appear to extend down in a
scale-invariant way to the faintest objects detected in the survey. These
results extend measurements of the formation efficiency of field galaxies by
two decades in halo mass, or five decades in stellar mass, down to some of the

The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey. VII. The intrinsic shapes of low-luminosity galaxies in the core of the Virgo cluster, and a comparison with the Local Group
(Abridged) We investigate the intrinsic shapes of low-luminosity galaxies in
the central 300 kpc of the Virgo cluster using deep imaging obtained as part of
the NGVS. We build a sample of nearly 300 red-sequence cluster members in the
yet unexplored magnitude range. The observed distribution of
apparent axis ratios is then fit by families of triaxial models with
normally-distributed intrinsic ellipticities and triaxialities. We develop a
Bayesian framework to explore the posterior distribution of the model
parameters, which allows us to work directly on discrete data, and to account
for individual, surface brightness-dependent axis ratio uncertainties. For this
population we infer a mean intrinsic ellipticity E=0.43, and a mean triaxiality
T=0.16. This implies that faint Virgo galaxies are best described as a family
of thick, nearly oblate spheroids with mean intrinsic axis ratios 1:0.94:0.57.
We additionally attempt a study of the intrinsic shapes of Local Group
satellites of similar luminosities. For the LG population we infer a slightly
larger mean intrinsic ellipticity E=0.51, and the paucity of objects with round
apparent shapes translates into more triaxial mean shapes, 1:0.76:0.49. We
finally compare the intrinsic shapes of NGVS low-mass galaxies with samples of
more massive quiescent systems, and with field, star-forming galaxies of
similar luminosities. We find that the intrinsic flattening in this
low-luminosity regime is almost independent of the environment in which the
galaxy resides--but there is a hint that objects may be slightly rounder in
denser environments. The comparable flattening distributions of low-luminosity
galaxies that have experienced very different degrees of environmental effects
suggests that internal processes are the main drivers of galaxy structure at
