On the thermodynamics of first-order phase transition smeared by frozen disorder
The simplified model of first-order transition in a media with frozen
long-range transition-temperature disorder is considered. It exhibits the
smearing of the transition due to appearance of the intermediate inhomogeneous
phase with thermodynamics described by the ground state of the short-range
random-field Ising model. Thus the model correctly reproduce the persistence of
first-order transition only in dimensions d > 2, which is found in more
realistic models. It also allows to estimate the behavior of thermodynamic
parameters near the boundaries of the inhomogeneous phase.Comment: 4 page
Magnetic nanocomposites at microwave frequencies
Most conventional magnetic materials used in the electronic devices are
ferrites, which are composed of micrometer-size grains. But ferrites have small
saturation magnetization, therefore the performance at GHz frequencies is
rather poor. That is why functionalized nanocomposites comprising magnetic
nanoparticles (e.g. Fe, Co) with dimensions ranging from a few nm to 100 nm,
and embedded in dielectric matrices (e.g. silicon oxide, aluminium oxide) have
a significant potential for the electronics industry. When the size of the
nanoparticles is smaller than the critical size for multidomain formation,
these nanocomposites can be regarded as an ensemble of particles in
single-domain states and the losses (due for example to eddy currents) are
expected to be relatively small. Here we review the theory of magnetism in such
materials, and we present a novel measurement method used for the
characterization of the electromagnetic properties of composites with
nanomagnetic insertions. We also present a few experimental results obtained on
composites consisting of iron nanoparticles in a dielectric matrix.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 5 table
Quasi-static cracks and minimal energy surfaces
We compare the roughness of minimal energy(ME) surfaces and scalar
``quasi-static'' fracture surfaces(SQF). Two dimensional ME and SQF surfaces
have the same roughness scaling, w sim L^zeta (L is system size) with zeta =
2/3. The 3-d ME and SQF results at strong disorder are consistent with the
random-bond Ising exponent zeta (d >= 3) approx 0.21(5-d) (d is bulk
dimension). However 3-d SQF surfaces are rougher than ME ones due to a larger
prefactor. ME surfaces undergo a ``weakly rough'' to ``algebraically rough''
transition in 3-d, suggesting a similar behavior in fracture.Comment: 7 pages, aps.sty-latex, 7 figure
Peptic Fluorescent "Signal-On" and "Signal-Off" Sensors Utilized for the Detection Protein Post-Translational Modifications
Protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) are typically enzyme-catalyzed events generating functional diversification of proteome; thus, multiple PTM enzymes have been validated as potential drug targets. We have previously introduced energy-transfer-based signal-modulation method called quenching resonance energy transfer (QRET), and utilize it to monitor PTM addition or removal using the developed peptide-break technology. Now we have reinvented the QRET technology, and as a model, we introduced the tunable fluorescent "signal-on" and "signal-off" detection scheme in the peptide-break PTM detection. Taking the advantage of time-resolved fluorescence-based single-label detection technology, we were able to select the signal direction upon PTM addition or removal by simply introducing different soluble Eu3+-signal-modulating molecule. This enables the selection of positive signal change upon measurable event, without any additional labeling steps, changes in assay condition or Eu3+-reporter. The concept functionality was demonstrated with four Eu3+-signal modulators in a high-throughput compatible kinase and phosphatase assays using signal-on and signal-off readout at 615 nm or time-resolved Forster resonance energy transfer at 665 nm. Our data suggest that the introduced signal modulation methodology provides a transitional fluorescence-based single-label detection concept not limited only to PTM detection
International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force consensus report on epilepsy definition, classification and terminology in companion animals
Dogs with epilepsy are among the commonest neurological patients in veterinary practice and therefore have historically attracted much attention with regard to definitions, clinical approach and management. A number of classification proposals for canine epilepsy have been published during the years reflecting always in parts the current proposals coming from the human epilepsy organisation the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE). It has however not been possible to gain agreed consensus, “a common language”, for the classification and terminology used between veterinary and human neurologists and neuroscientists, practitioners, neuropharmacologists and neuropathologists. This has led to an unfortunate situation where different veterinary publications and textbook chapters on epilepsy merely reflect individual author preferences with respect to terminology, which can be confusing to the readers and influence the definition and diagnosis of epilepsy in first line practice and research studies.
In this document the International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force (IVETF) discusses current understanding of canine epilepsy and presents our 2015 proposal for terminology and classification of epilepsy and epileptic seizures. We propose a classification system which reflects new thoughts from the human ILAE but also roots in former well accepted terminology. We think that this classification system can be used by all stakeholders
Genetic variants and blood pressure in a population-based cohort: the cardiovascular risk in young Finns study
Clinical relevance of a genetic predisposition to elevated blood pressure was quantified during the transition from childhood to adulthood in a population-based Finnish cohort (N=2,357). Blood pressure was measured at baseline in 1980 (age 3–18 years) and in follow-ups in 1983, 1986, 2001 and 2007. Thirteen single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with blood pressure were genotyped and three genetic risk scores associated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure and their combination were derived for all participants. Effects of the genetic risk score were 0.47 mmHg for systolic and 0.53 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure (both p<0.01). The combination genetic risk score was associated with diastolic blood pressure from age 9 onwards (β=0.68 mmHg, p=0.015). Replications in 1194 participants of the Bogalusa Heart Study showed essentially similar results. The participants in the highest quintile of the combination genetic risk score had a 1.82-fold risk of hypertension in adulthood (p<0.0001) compared with the lowest quintile, independent of a family history of premature hypertension. These findings show that genetic variants are associated with preclinical blood pressure traits in childhood, individuals with several susceptibility alleles have on average a 0.5 mmHg higher blood pressure and this trajectory continues from childhood to adulthood

Third-harmonic performance of the Beamlet prototype laser
The Beamlet laser is a nearly full-scale, single-aperture prototype of the driver design for the National Ignition Facility (NIF). As part of a test and validation plan for the NIF design, Beamlet was recently equipped with final focusing optics and diagnostics for the purpose of evaluating integrated component performance and equivalent target-plane irradiance conditions at the 0.351-{mu}m output wavelength specified for NIF targets. A 37-cm aperture two-crystal converter scheme generates the third harmonic of the Nd:glass 1.053-{mu}m wavelength with high efficiency. The efficiency of the converter has been characterized and is reported, along with detailed measurements of the near-field and far-field UV irradiance distributions at operating conditions up to and exceeding red-line levels for the NIF. Dependences of observed beam quality on critical laser parameters including output power, B-integral, and spatial filtering are discussed and compared with numerical simulations
Prolonged sleep restriction induces changes in pathways involved in cholesterol metabolism and inflammatory responses
Sleep loss and insufficient sleep are risk factors for cardiometabolic diseases, but data on how insufficient sleep contributes to these diseases are scarce. These questions were addressed using two approaches: an experimental, partial sleep restriction study (14 cases and 7 control subjects) with objective verification of sleep amount, and two independent epidemiological cohorts (altogether 2739 individuals) with questions of sleep insufficiency. In both approaches, blood transcriptome and serum metabolome were analysed. Sleep loss decreased the expression of genes encoding cholesterol transporters and increased expression in pathways involved in inflammatory responses in both paradigms. Metabolomic analyses revealed lower circulating large HDL in the population cohorts among subjects reporting insufficient sleep, while circulating LDL decreased in the experimental sleep restriction study. These findings suggest that prolonged sleep deprivation modifies inflammatory and cholesterol pathways at the level of gene expression and serum lipoproteins, inducing changes toward potentially higher risk for cardiometabolic diseases
The pains of desistance
Desistance is generally presented in a positive light, with themes of ‘making good’ and generativity recurring in the literature. This article reports on two qualitative studies exploring the desistance journeys of two different groups of ex-offenders, drawing attention to the pains of this process. It examines the possible consequences of these ‘pains of desistance’ and how they are linked to three spheres of desistance: act-desistance; identity desistance; and relational desistance. The attempt to achieve act-desistance often led to the pain of isolation for our interviewees, while the clash between the need to achieve identity desistance and a lack of relational desistance (especially on the meso- and macro-levels) meant that they suffered the pain of goal failure. The pains of isolation and goal failure combined to lead to the further pain of hopelessness. Those interviewed were indeed ‘going straight’, but taking this path led many to a limited and often diminished life
