    Ageing perception in seniors’ formal caregivers

    This paper explores the ageing perception of a group of seniors’ caregiver workers, particularly those who have direct contact with the elderly while performing their tasks. Therefore, we analyze the variables that influence this perception and the ones that can be good predictors. One hundred and forty-eight individuals took part in this study (a hundred and thirty- five females and twelve males) with ages between twentyone and sixty-five years old. It was applied the Portuguese versions of the tests Ageing Perception Questionnaire, the Self-Concept Scale (TSCS:2) and a sociodemographic questionnaire. The results showed that the ageing perception is more negative as age advances. On the other hand, individuals with higher education, training in the health field or with a stronger self-concept have a more positive ageing perception. The studied variables that best predict the emotional representation for ageing are the academic qualifications and the academic self-concept.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Mirandesa breed calves: growth performance and carcass characterization affected by sex and livestock production system

A total of 2,263 and 60 animals for growth performance and carcass characteristics, respectively were used. Initially, the suitability of several equations to describe the growth of cattle from the Mirandesa variety was studied. In all situations, mathematical models were formulated with parameters of clear biological meaning. Bertalanffy and Gompertz equations were the most satisfactory equations to model the growth of males and females, respectively. Calves from traditional system were 68.61 kg heavier than animals from extensive system. On the other hand, calves from traditional systems showed (P<0.01) higher dressing percentage compared to animals from extensive system. There were significant differences for all morphometric parameters by LPS effect with the exception of internal depth pf chest, whereas sex effect had less importance. The LPS had statistically significant effect in all individual joints in the front quarter and hind quarter with the exception of sirloin and eye of round for front quarter and shoulder and the sum of chuck plus neck in the hind quarter. Finally, the LPS had statistically significant effect in all components of fifth quarter, with the exception of intestines, liver, tail and spleen, whereas sex effect only affected heart proportionPeer reviewe

    Características de la canal de terneros de la Denominación de Origen Protegida Mirandesa

    El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar las características de la canal de la raza Mirandesa. Para llevar a cabo este estudio, un total de 20 animales de la raza Mirandesa fueron sacrificados a los 315 días. 24 horas tras el sacrificio, se determinó el peso canal y rendimiento canal, se realizaron las medidas morfométricas (longitud de la canal, longitud de la pierna, espesor de la pierna, profundidad interna del pecho y perímetro máximo de la pierna), se calcularon los siguientes índices: índice de compacidad de la canal e índice longitudinal transversal de la pierna y se realizó el despiece de los principales cortes comerciales. Los animales de la raza Mirandesa presentaron un peso vivo de 293,7 kg, un peso canal de 152 kg y un rendimiento canal de 60,5 %. En relación a las medidas morfométricas, la raza Mirandesa mostró una longitud de canal de 110 cm, una longitud de pierna de 69 cm y un perímetro de pierna de 89,8 cm. Los valores para el índice de compacidad de la canal y el índice longitudinal transversal de la pierna fueron de 1,4 y 3,7, respectivamente. Con respecto al quinto cuarto, la piel presentó los mayores porcentajes seguida de la cabeza y pies. Finalmente, la composición de las canales de la raza Mirandesa fue: 74,9 % de carne, 18,1 % de hueso y 7,0 % de grasa.The aim of this study was to evaluate the carcass characteristics of Mirandesa breed. To carry out this study, a total of 20 animals of Mirandesa breed were slaughter at 315 days. After 24 hours of slaughter, carcass weight and dressing percentage were determined, and morphometric measurements (carcass length, leg length, leg width, leg perimeter, chest external depth, chest internal depth and leg maximum perimeter) were performed and the following indexes were calculated: carcass compactness index and hindlimb compactness index and the main commercial cuts were obtained. Animals from Mirandesa breed presented a 293.7 kg live weight, a 152 kg carcass weight and a dressing percentage of 60.5 %. Regarding morphometric measurements, animals from Mirandesa breed showed a carcass length of 110 cm, leg length of 69 cm and leg perimeter of 89.8 cm. The values for the carcass compactness index and hindlimb compactness index were 1.4 and 3.7, respectively. Respecting fifth quarter, skin showed the highest percentages following by head and feet.     Influencia de la relación proteína de altramuz/tensioactivo en las propiedades de flujo y texturales de emulsiones aceite en agua

    The influence of different surfactant/lupin protein ratio on the shear-flow and texture properties of oil-in-water emulsions was investigated in this work in order to find a synergistic effect between both types of emulsifiers. With this aim, texture, steady-shear flow and droplet size measurements were carried out. Different surfactants (Tween 20 and three sucrose esters) showing different phase behaviour in water solution were studied. From the experimental results it can be concluded that emulsions stabilised by mixtures of both, low- and high-molecular-weight emulsifiers, show lower values of steady-state viscosity and textural parameters than those found when lupin protein was the only emulsifier used, in spite of a higher average droplet size. The evolution of emulsion textural and flow parameters with the composition of the mixture used as emulsifier can be explained on the basis of the phase behaviour of the low-molecular-weight emulsifier, modifications on the composition at the interface and hydrophobic interactions between both type of emulsifiers.En el presente trabajo se ha estudiado la influencia que ejerce la proporción proteína de altramuz/emulsionante de bajo peso molecular en el comportamiento viscoso y en las propiedades texturales de emulsiones alimentarias aceite en agua con el fin de investigar un posible efecto sinérgico entre ambos tipos de emulsionantes. Con este propósito, se efectuaron medidas de tamaño de gota, flujo viscoso y propiedades texturales en emulsiones estabilizadas por proteína de altramuz y tensioactivos de diferente HLB (Tween 20 y tres estearatos de sacarosa). De los resultados experimentales, se concluye que las emulsiones estabilizadas por ambos tipos de emulsionantes muestran valores de la viscosidad en estado estacionario y de las propiedades texturales estudiadas inferiores a los encontrados en la emulsión estabilizada únicamente con proteína de altramuz, a pesar de poseer esta última un mayor tamaño medio de gota. La dependencia de los parámetros de flujo y texturales con la composición de la mezcla de emulsionantes empleada puede explicarse atendiendo al comportamiento de fases que presentan los emulsionantes de bajo peso molecular, así como a la estructura de la película interfacial y las interacciones entre ambos tipos de emulsionantes

    A clonal Plasmodium falciparum population in an isolated outbreak of malaria in the Republic of Cabo Verde

    We present the first parasitological, molecular and longitudinal analysis of an isolated outbreak of malaria. This outbreak occurred on Santiago Island (Republic of Cabo Verde), a region where malaria is hypoendemic and controlled, and thus the population is considered non-immune. Blood samples were collected from the inhabitants over 1 month and during cross-sectional surveys in the following year. The presence and nature of the parasites was determined by PCR. Plasmodium falciparum was the only species detected. Genetic analysis revealed that the circulating parasites were genetically homogeneous, and probably clonal. Gametocytes were found throughout this period. Our data suggest that this represented a focal outbreak, resulting in the infection of at least 40% of the villagers with a clonal parasite line. Thus, P. falciparum infections can persist for at least 1 year in a substantial proportion (10%) of the hosts. Implications for malaria control and the interpretation of epidemiological data are discussed
