    Links between topography, wind, deflation, lakes and dust: The case of the Bodélé Depression, Chad

    The Bodélé Depression, Chad is the planet's largest single source of dust. Deflation from the Bodélé could be seen as a simple coincidence of two key prerequisites: strong surface winds and a large source of suitable sediment. But here we hypothesise that long term links between topography, winds, deflation and dust ensure the maintenance of the dust source such that these two apparently coincidental key ingredients are connected by land-atmosphere processes with topography acting as the overall controlling agent. We use a variety of observational and numerical techniques, including a regional climate model, to show that: 1) contemporary deflation from the Bodélé is delineated by topography and a surface wind stress maximum; 2) the Tibesti and Ennedi mountains play a key role in the generation of the erosive winds in the form of the Bodélé Low Level Jet (LLJ); 3) enhanced deflation from a stronger Bodélé LLJ during drier phases, for example, the Last Glacial Maximum, was probably sufficient to create the shallow lake in which diatoms lived during wetter phases, such as the Holocene pluvial. Winds may therefore have helped to create the depression in which erodible diatom material accumulated. Instead of a simple coincidence of nature, dust from the world's largest source may result from the operation of long term processes on paleo timescales which have led to ideal conditions for dust generation in the world's largest dust source. Similar processes plausibly operate in other dust hotspots in topographic depressions

    Polycystic ovary syndrome is an endocrine disorder affecting 1 in 10 women. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome can experience co-morbidities, including depressive symptoms. This research explores the experience of living with polycystic ovary syndrome and co-morbidities. Totally, 10 participants with polycystic ovary syndrome took part in Skype™ interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. Four themes emerged from the data: change (to life plans and changing nature of condition); support (healthcare professionals, education and relationships); co-morbidities (living with other conditions and depression, self-harm and suicidal ideation) and identity (feminine identity and us and them). The findings highlight the need for screening of women with polycystic ovary syndrome for depressive disorders

    For non-Archimedean spaces X X and Y, Y, let M(X),M(VW) \mathcal{M}_{\flat } (X), \mathfrak{M}(V \rightarrow W) and D(X,Y) \mathfrak{D}_{\flat }(X, Y) be the ballean of X X (the family of the balls in X X ), the space of mappings from X X to Y, Y, and the space of mappings from the ballen of X X to Y, Y, respectively. By studying explicitly the Hausdorff metric structures related to these spaces, we construct several families of new metric structures (e.g., ρ^u,β^X,Yλ,β^X,Yλ \widehat{\rho } _{u}, \widehat{\beta }_{X, Y}^{\lambda }, \widehat{\beta }_{X, Y}^{\ast \lambda } ) on the corresponding spaces, and study their convergence, structural relation, law of variation in the variable λ, \lambda, including some normed algebra structure. To some extent, the class β^X,Yλ \widehat{\beta }_{X, Y}^{\lambda } is a counterpart of the usual Levy-Prohorov metric in the probability measure spaces, but it behaves very differently, and is interesting in itself. Moreover, when X X is compact and Y=K Y = K is a complete non-Archimedean field, we construct and study a Dudly type metric of the space of K K-valued measures on X. X.     Renormalized Equilibria of a Schloegl Model Lattice Gas

    A lattice gas model for Schloegl's second chemical reaction is described and analyzed. Because the lattice gas does not obey a semi-detailed-balance condition, the equilibria are non-Gibbsian. In spite of this, a self-consistent set of equations for the exact homogeneous equilibria are described, using a generalized cluster-expansion scheme. These equations are solved in the two-particle BBGKY approximation, and the results are compared to numerical experiment. It is found that this approximation describes the equilibria far more accurately than the Boltzmann approximation. It is also found, however, that spurious solutions to the equilibrium equations appear which can only be removed by including effects due to three-particle correlations.Comment: 21 pages, REVTe

    Mutations in DYNC2LI1 disrupt cilia function and cause short rib polydactyly syndrome.

    The short rib polydactyly syndromes (SRPSs) are a heterogeneous group of autosomal recessive, perinatal lethal skeletal disorders characterized primarily by short, horizontal ribs, short limbs and polydactyly. Mutations in several genes affecting intraflagellar transport (IFT) cause SRPS but they do not account for all cases. Here we identify an additional SRPS gene and further unravel the functional basis for IFT. We perform whole-exome sequencing and identify mutations in a new disease-producing gene, cytoplasmic dynein-2 light intermediate chain 1, DYNC2LI1, segregating with disease in three families. Using primary fibroblasts, we show that DYNC2LI1 is essential for dynein-2 complex stability and that mutations in DYNC2LI1 result in variable length, including hyperelongated, cilia, Hedgehog pathway impairment and ciliary IFT accumulations. The findings in this study expand our understanding of SRPS locus heterogeneity and demonstrate the importance of DYNC2LI1 in dynein-2 complex stability, cilium function, Hedgehog regulation and skeletogenesis

    We analyze the Ising model on a random surface with a boundary magnetic field using matrix model techniques. We are able to exactly calculate the disk amplitude, boundary magnetization and bulk magnetization in the presence of a boundary field. The results of these calculations can be interpreted in terms of renormalization group flow induced by the boundary operator. In the continuum limit this RG flow corresponds to the flow from non-conformal to conformal boundary conditions which has recently been studied in flat space theories.Comment: 31 pages, Late

    Intravital multiphoton microscopy can model uptake and excretion of fluorescein in hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury

    The liver is important in the biotransformation of various drugs, where hepatic transporters facilitate uptake and excretion. Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is a common occurrence in liver surgery, and the developing oxidative stress can lead to graft failure. We used intravital multiphoton tomography, with fluorescence lifetime imaging, to characterize metabolic damage associated with hepatic I/R injury and to model the distribution of fluorescein as a measure of liver function. In addition to measuring a significant increase in serum alanine transaminase levels, characteristic of hepatic I/R injury, a decrease in the averaged weighted lifetime of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate was observed, which can be attributed to a changed metabolic redox state of the hepatocytes. I/R injury was associated with delayed uptake and excretion of fluorescein and elevated area-under-the-curve within the hepatocytes compared to sham (i.e., untreated control) as visualized and modeled using images recorded by intravital multiphoton tomography. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis showed no differences in plasma or bile concentrations of fluorescein. Finally, altered fluorescein distribution was associated with acute changes in the expression of liver transport proteins. In summary, multiphoton intravital imaging is an effective approach to measure liver function and is more sensitive in contrasting the impact of I/R injury than measuring plasma and bile concentrations of fluorescein

    We consider type II string theory compactified on a symmetric T^6/Z_2 orientifold. We study a general class of discrete deformations of the resulting four-dimensional supergravity theory, including gaugings arising from geometric and "nongeometric'' fluxes, as well as the usual R-R and NS-NS fluxes. Solving the equations of motion associated with the resulting N = 1 superpotential, we find parametrically controllable infinite families of supersymmetric vacua with all moduli stabilized. We also describe some aspects of the distribution of generic solutions to the SUSY equations of motion for this model, and note in particular the existence of an apparently infinite number of solutions in a finite range of the parameter space of the four-dimensional effective theory.Comment: 30 pages, 4 .eps figures; v2, reference adde
