Wave-guided optical waveguides
This work primarily aims to fabricate and use two photon polymerization (2PP) microstructures capable of being optically manipulated into any arbitrary orientation. We have integrated optical waveguides into the structures and therefore have freestanding waveguides, which can be positioned anywhere in the sample at any orientation using optical traps. One of the key aspects to the work is the change in direction of the incident plane wave, and the marked increase in the numerical aperture demonstrated. Hence, the optically steered waveguide can tap from a relatively broader beam and then generate a more tightly confined light at its tip. The paper contains both simulation, related to the propagation of light through the waveguide, and experimental demonstrations using our BioPhotonics Workstation. In a broader context, this work shows that optically trapped microfabricated structures can potentially help bridge the diffraction barrier. This structure-mediated paradigm may be carried forward to open new possibilities for exploiting beams from far-field optics down to the subwavelength domain. (C)2012 Optical Society of Americ
Book review: Gerald D. Feldman, Austrian banks in the period of National Socialism
Even though Germany, Austria, and Hungary experienced a major financial crisis simultaneously in 1931, of the three, only Germany's and Austria's episodes have been investigated in depth. This article offers a thorough assessment of the missing piece. It finds that, just like Germany, Hungary also experienced a twin crisis. The primary reason for the weakness of the financial sector was banks’ excessive exposure to agricultural loans. The fragility of the currency was the result of an early balance-of-payments crisis in 1928/9. The vulnerability of the banking and monetary systems culminated in a twin crisis in 1931

Integrated optical devices using bacteriorhodopsin as active nonlinear optical material
Coupling of optical data-processing devices with microelectronics,
telecocommunication and sensory functions, is among the biggest challenges in
molecular electronics. Intensive research is going on to find suitable nonlinear
optical materials that could meet the demanding requirements of optoelectronic
applications, especially regarding high sensitivity and stability. In addition
to inorganic and organic crystals, biological molecules have also been
considered for use in integrated optics, among which the bacterial
chromoprotein, bacteriorhodopsin (bR) generated the most interest. bR undergoes
enormous absorption and concomitant refractive index changes upon initiation of
a cyclic series of photoreactions by a burst of actinic light. This effect can
be exploited to create highly versatile all-optical logical elements. We
demonstrate the potential of this approach by investigating the static and
dynamic response of several basic elements of integrated optical devices. Our
results show that, due to its relatively high refractive index changes, bR can
be used as an active nonlinear optical material to produce a variety of
integrated optical switching and modulation effects
lmmunofluorescent examination of the kidney post mortem
106 selected kidneys removed at autopsy were
studied by direct immunofluorescence using polyvalent
antisera against human immunoglobulins, light chains,
complement fractions and fibrinogen. The
immunofluorescence was a suitable me'thod to solve
differential diagnostic problems that arose at autopsy. The
diagnostic value was the most obvious in cases of
immunologically mediated renal diseases and in
immunologically mediated systemic diseases involving the
kidneys. Negative immunofluorescence findings were also
useful to determine the pathogenesis of renal lesions,
especially in vasculopathies. The immunofluorescence of
postmortem material showed similar disturbances to that
obtained with biopsy material. At various sites, especially
in the tubulo-interstitium, additional electron microscopical
study was sometimes needed to localise the immune deposits
exactly. The fluorescent microscopical examination of
frozen sections of kidney taken at necropsy turned out to
be more adequate than the immunoperoxidase examination
of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections
