Out-of-plane dielectric constant and insulator-superconductor transition in Bi_2Sr_2Dy_{1-x}Er_xCu_2O_8 single crystals
The out-of-plane dielectric constant of the parent insulator of the
high-temperature superconductor Bi_2Sr_2(Dy,Er)Cu_2O_8 was measured and
analysed from 80 to 300 K in the frequency range of 10^6-10^9 Hz. All the
samples were found to show a fairly large value of 10-60, implying some kind of
charge inhomogeneity in the CuO_2 plane. Considering that the superconducting
sample Bi_2Sr_2(Ca,Pr)Cu_2O_8 also shows a similar dielectric constant, the
charge inhomogeneity plays an important role in the insulator-superconductor

Comparative morpho-anatomical studies of the lesions caused by citrus leprosis virus on sweet orange
The leprosis disease shows a viral etiology and the citrus leprosis virus is considered its etiologic agent. The disease may show two types of cytopatologic symptom caused by two virus: nuclear (CiLV-N) and cytoplasmic (CiLV-C) types. The aim of this study was to compare the morpho-anatomical differences in the lesions caused by leprosis virus-cytoplasmic and nuclear types in Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck ?Pêra?. Leaf and fruit lesions were collected in Piracicaba/São Paulo (cytoplasmic type) and Monte Alegre do Sul/São Paulo and Amparo/São Paulo (nuclear type). The lesions were photographed and then fixed in Karnovsky solution, dehydrated in a graded ethylic series, embedded in hydroxy-ethyl methacrylate resin (Leica Historesin), sectioned (5?m thick), stained and mounted in synthetic resin. The digital images were acquired in a microscope with digital video camera. Leaf and fruit lesions caused by the two viruses were morphologically distinct. Only the lesion caused by CiLV-N virus presented three well-defined regions. In both lesions there was the accumulation of lipidic substances in necrotic areas that were surrounded by cells with amorphous or droplets protein. Only leaf and fruit lesions caused by CiLV-N virus exhibited traumatic gum ducts in the vascular bundles.Disponivel em: .Acesso em: 18 out. 2010

Divergent drivers of leaf trait variation within species, among species, and among functional groups.
Understanding variation in leaf functional traits-including rates of photosynthesis and respiration and concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus-is a fundamental challenge in plant ecophysiology. When expressed per unit leaf area, these traits typically increase with leaf mass per area (LMA) within species but are roughly independent of LMA across the global flora. LMA is determined by mass components with different biological functions, including photosynthetic mass that largely determines metabolic rates and contains most nitrogen and phosphorus, and structural mass that affects toughness and leaf lifespan (LL). A possible explanation for the contrasting trait relationships is that most LMA variation within species is associated with variation in photosynthetic mass, whereas most LMA variation across the global flora is associated with variation in structural mass. This hypothesis leads to the predictions that (i) gas exchange rates and nutrient concentrations per unit leaf area should increase strongly with LMA across species assemblages with low LL variance but should increase weakly with LMA across species assemblages with high LL variance and that (ii) controlling for LL variation should increase the strength of the above LMA relationships. We present analyses of intra- and interspecific trait variation from three tropical forest sites and interspecific analyses within functional groups in a global dataset that are consistent with the above predictions. Our analysis suggests that the qualitatively different trait relationships exhibited by different leaf assemblages can be understood by considering the degree to which photosynthetic and structural mass components contribute to LMA variation in a given assemblage
Dissociative photoionization of the NO molecule studied by photoelectron-photon coincidence technique
Low-energy photoelectron–vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photon coincidences have been measured using synchrotron radiation excitation in the inner-valence region of the nitric oxide molecule. The capabilities of the coincidence set-up were demonstrated by detecting the 2s−1 → 2p−1 radiative transitions in coincidence with the 2s photoelectron emission in Ne. In NO, the observed coincidence events are attributed to dissociative photoionization with excitation, whereby photoelectron emission is followed by fragmentation of excited NO+ ions into O+ + N* or N+ + O* and VUV emission from an excited neutral fragment. The highest coincidence rate occurs with the opening of ionization channels which are due to correlation satellites of the 3σ photoionization. The decay time of VUV photon emission was also measured, implying that specific excited states of N atoms contribute significantly to observed VUV emission

Identificação e purificação de um vírus da poliedrose nuclear da lagarta Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera Noctuidae).
A lagarta-do-cartucho e considerado uma das principais pragas da cultura do milho e seu controle tem sido feito basicamente pelo uso de inseticidas quimicos. O CNPMS/EMBRAPA considerando as possibilidades de um controle biologico desta praga, tem procurado um virus de granulose. Recentemente isolou-se , a partir de uma lagarta do campo, um virus de poliedrose nuclear (VPN), que tem sido mantido em larvas em condicoes de laboratorio, causando nestas sintomas identicos ao observado no campo. Poliedrose puderam ser purificados a partir de extratos de lagarta infectada atraves de centrifugacao diferencial em um gradiente de densidade de sacarose. Teste de infectividade mostraram que larvas de S. frugiperda, criadas artificialmente, de 3, 6 e 7 dias de idade,alimentadas com suspensoes poliedros, em concentracoes de 2 x 106 ml, tiveram alta taxa de mortalidade (praticamente 100%), exceto as de 7 dias, na menor dose cuja mortandade foi da ordem de 70%. Exames de extratos das lagartas infectadas mostraram a presenca de grande numero de poliedros, mas a identificacao adequada de que se tratava de um virus de poliedrose nuclear, do tipo "multi-enveloped", (MECPN) so pode ser feita atraves de exames de seccoes ultra finas ao microscopio eletronico: nucleos de ectoderma, tecido adiposo e traqueocitos continham grande numero de poliedros e, ocluidas nestes, particulas baciliformes, em geral varias delas envolvidas por um envoltorio comum.Suplemento
Microbial abundance and community composition in biofilms on in-pipe sensors in a drinking water distribution system
Collecting biofilm samples from drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) is challenging due to limited access to the pipes during regular operations. We report here the analysis of microbial communities in biofilm and water samples collected from sensors installed in a DWDS where monochloramine is used as a residual disinfectant. A total of 52 biofilm samples and 14 bulk water samples were collected from 17 pipe sections representing different water ages. Prokaryotic genome copies (bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA genes, Mycobacterium spp., ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and cyanobacteria) were quantified with droplet digital PCR, which revealed the abundance of these genes in both biofilm and water samples. Prokaryotic 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis was carried out for a subset of the samples (12 samples from four sites). Mycobacterium and AOB species were dominant in the DWDS sections with low water age and sufficient residual monochloramine, whereas Nitrospira species (nitrite-oxidizing bacteria) dominated in the sections with higher water age and depleted monochloramine level, suggesting the occurrence of nitrification in the studied DWDS. Ultrafast dynamics of coherent optical phonons and nonequilibrium electrons in transition metals
The femtosecond optical pump-probe technique was used to study dynamics of
photoexcited electrons and coherent optical phonons in transition metals Zn and
Cd as a function of temperature and excitation level. The optical response in
time domain is well fitted by linear combination of a damped harmonic
oscillation because of excitation of coherent phonon and a
subpicosecond transient response due to electron-phonon thermalization. The
electron-phonon thermalization time monotonically increases with temperature,
consistent with the thermomodulation scenario, where at high temperatures the
system can be well explained by the two-temperature model, while below
50 K the nonthermal electron model needs to be applied. As the
lattice temperature increases, the damping of the coherent phonon
increases, while the amplitudes of both fast electronic response and the
coherent phonon decrease. The temperature dependence of the damping of
the phonon indicates that population decay of the coherent optical
phonon due to anharmonic phonon-phonon coupling dominates the decay process. We
present a model that accounts for the observed temperature dependence of the
amplitude assuming the photoinduced absorption mechanism, where the signal
amplitude is proportional to the photoinduced change in the quasiparticle
density. The result that the amplitude of the phonon follows the
temperature dependence of the amplitude of the fast electronic transient
indicates that under the resonant condition both electronic and phononic

Primordial black hole formation from an axion-like curvaton model
We argue that the existence of the cold dark matter is explained by
primordial black holes.We show that a significant number of primordial black
holes can be formed in an axion-like curvaton model, in which the highly
blue-tilted power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations is achieved.It
is found that the produced black holes with masses account for the present cold dark matter.We also argue the
possibility of forming the primordial black holes with mass as seeds of the supermassive black holes.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
