B70/B7-2 is identical to CD86 and is the major functional ligand for CD28 expressed on human dendritic cells.
Dendritic cells comprise a system of highly efficient antigen-presenting cells involved in the initiation of T cell responses. Herein, we investigated the role of the CD28 pathway during alloreactive T cell proliferation induced by dendritic-Langerhans cells (D-Lc) generated by culturing human cord blood CD34+ progenitor cells with granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor and tumor necrosis factor alpha. In addition to expressing CD80 (B7/BB1), a subset of D-Lc expressed B70/B7-2. Binding of the CTLA4-Ig fusion protein was completely inhibited by a combination of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against CD80 and B70/B7-2, indicating the absence of expression of a third ligand for CD28/CTLA-4. It is interesting to note that mAbs against CD86 completely prevented the binding of CTLA4-Ig in the presence of mAbs against CD80 and bound to a B70/B7-2-transfected fibroblast cell line, demonstrating that the B70/B7-2 antigen is identical to CD86. CD28 triggering was essential during D-Lc-induced alloreaction as it was inhibited by mAbs against CD28 (9 out of 11 tested). However, none of six anti-CD80 mAbs demonstrated any activity on the D-Lc-induced alloreaction, though some were previously described as inhibitory in assays using CD80-transfected cell lines. In contrast, a mAb against CD86 (IT-2) was found to suppress the D-Lc-dependent alloreaction by 70%. This inhibitory effect was enhanced to > or = 90% when a combination of anti-CD80 and anti-CD86 mAbs was used. The present results demonstrate that D-Lc express, in addition to CD80, the other ligand for CTLA-4, CD86 (B70/B7-2), which plays a primordial role during D-Lc-induced alloreaction
An easy to control all-metal in-line-series ohmic RF MEMS switch

The proposed switch, due to its unique shape and size, assures high isolation and great linearity fulfilling the necessary requirements as concerns loss, power handling and power consumption. Simplicity has been set as the key success factor implying robustness and high fabrication yield. On the other hand, the specially designed cantilever-shape (hammerhead) allows distributed actuation force ensuring high controllability as well as reliability making the presented RF MEMS switch one of its kind
Unified Framework for Correlations in Terms of Local Quantum Observables
We provide a unified framework for nonsignalling quantum and classical
multipartite correlations, allowing all to be written as the trace of some
local (quantum) measurements multiplied by an operator. The properties of this
operator define the corresponding set of correlations.We then show that if the
theory is such that all local quantum measurements are possible, one obtains
the correlations corresponding to the extension of Gleason's Theorem to
multipartite systems. Such correlations coincide with the quantum ones for one

Rotating Hele-Shaw cells with ferrofluids
We investigate the flow of two immiscible, viscous fluids in a rotating
Hele-Shaw cell, when one of the fluids is a ferrofluid and an external magnetic
field is applied. The interplay between centrifugal and magnetic forces in
determining the instability of the fluid-fluid interface is analyzed. The
linear stability analysis of the problem shows that a non-uniform, azimuthal
magnetic field, applied tangential to the cell, tends to stabilize the
interface. We verify that maximum growth rate selection of initial patterns is
influenced by the applied field, which tends to decrease the number of
interface ripples. We contrast these results with the situation in which a
uniform magnetic field is applied normally to the plane defined by the rotating

Calf Strength Loss During Mechanical Unloading: Does It Matter?
During the mechanical unloading of spaceflight and its ground-based analogs, muscle mass and muscle strength of the calf are difficult to preserve despite exercise countermeasures that effectively protect these parameters in the thigh. It is unclear what effects these local losses have on balance and whole body function which will be essential for successful performance of demanding tasks during future exploration missions
Dusty star forming galaxies at high redshift
The global star formation rate in high redshift galaxies, based on optical
surveys, shows a strong peak at a redshift of z=1.5, which implies that we have
already seen most of the formation. High redshift galaxies may, however, emit
most of their energy at submillimeter wavelengths if they contain substantial
amounts of dust. The dust would absorb the starlight and reradiate it as
far-infrared light, which would be redshifted to the submillimeter range. Here
we report a deep survey of two blank regions of sky performed at submillimeter
wavelengths (450 and 850-micron). If the sources we detect in the 850-micron
band are powered by star formation, then each must be converting more than 100
solar masses of gas per year into stars, which is larger than the maximum star
formation rates inferred for most optically-selected galaxies. The total amount
of high redshift star formation is essentially fixed by the level of background
light, but where the peak occurs in redshift for the submillimeter is not yet
established. However, the background light contribution from only the sources
detected at 850-micron is already comparable to that from the
optically-selected sources. Establishing the main epoch of star formation will

Inference of population splits and mixtures from genome-wide allele frequency data
Many aspects of the historical relationships between populations in a species
are reflected in genetic data. Inferring these relationships from genetic data,
however, remains a challenging task. In this paper, we present a statistical
model for inferring the patterns of population splits and mixtures in multiple
populations. In this model, the sampled populations in a species are related to
their common ancestor through a graph of ancestral populations. Using
genome-wide allele frequency data and a Gaussian approximation to genetic
drift, we infer the structure of this graph. We applied this method to a set of
55 human populations and a set of 82 dog breeds and wild canids. In both
species, we show that a simple bifurcating tree does not fully describe the
data; in contrast, we infer many migration events. While some of the migration
events that we find have been detected previously, many have not. For example,
in the human data we infer that Cambodians trace approximately 16% of their
ancestry to a population ancestral to other extant East Asian populations. In
the dog data, we infer that both the boxer and basenji trace a considerable
fraction of their ancestry (9% and 25%, respectively) to wolves subsequent to
domestication, and that East Asian toy breeds (the Shih Tzu and the Pekingese)
result from admixture between modern toy breeds and "ancient" Asian breeds.

Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression may predict distant metastasis in human melanoma
Expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and its cellular localization was investigated in subcutaneous or lymph node metastases of human melanoma. Immunohistochemistry revealed that iNOS expression was limited to melanoma cells. In samples of patients without distant metastases, the number of iNOS+ tumour cells/total tumour cells was 55% ± 17% (n = 12) compared with 9% ± 8% when distant metastases of lung, liver or brain occurred within an observation period of 3 years (n = 10) (P < 0.001). Western blotting confirmed the expression of iNOS protein in select cases. Notably, iNOS is expressed in regional melanoma metastases and its expression is inversely related to the tumour's metastatic potential. Thus, iNOS expression may have predictive value for the development of distant metastases of human melanoma. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig
