    Tradition through Modernity: Postmodernism and the Nation-State in Folklore Scholarship

    "In their study of social practices deemed traditional, scholars tend to use the concept and idea of tradition as an element of meaning in the practices under investigation. But just whose meaning is it? Is it a meaning generated by those who study tradition or those whose traditions are being studied? In both cases, particular criteria for traditionality are employed, whether these are explicated or not. Individuals and groups will no doubt continue to uphold their traditional practices or refer to their practices as traditional. While they are in no way obliged to explicate in analytical terms their criteria for traditionality, the same cannot be said for those who make the study of traditions their profession. In scholarly analysis, traditions need to be explained instead of used as explanations for apparent repetitions and replications or symbolic linking in social practice, values, history, and heritage politics. This book takes a closer look at ‘tradition’ and ‘folklore’ in order to conceptualize them within discourses on modernity and modernism. The first section discusses ‘modern’ and ‘traditional’ as modern concepts and the study of folklore as a modern trajectory. The underlying tenet here is that non-modernity cannot be represented without modern mediation, which therefore makes the representations of non-modernity epistemologically modern. The second section focuses on the nation-state of Finland and the nationalistic use of folk traditions in the discursive production of Finnish modernity and its Others. The insights are applicable worldwide in discussions on cultural representation.

    Ruokakasvatus varhaiskasvatuksessa

    Tiivistelmä. Kandidaatintutkielman tavoitteena on tuoda esille varhaiskasvatuksessa tapahtuvan ruokakasvatuksen merkitystä lapsen tulevaisuuden ruokavalintojen tekemistä sekä terveellisten elämäntapojen muodostamista ja tukemista ajatellen. Esittelen tutkielmassani erilaisia keinoja, joilla ruokakasvatusta voidaan varhaiskasvatuksessa toteuttaa. Kandidaatintutkielmani on kvalitatiivinen tutkimus, jonka toteutin kuvailevana kirjallisuuskatsauksena. Asetin tutkielmalleni kaksi tutkimuskysymystä: Miksi ruokakasvatuksen toteuttaminen varhaiskasvatuksessa on tärkeää? Millaisia välineitä varhaiskasvatuksen henkilöstöllä on toteuttaa ruokakasvatusta varhaiskasvatuksessa? Ruokakasvatus on kasvatusta, jonka tavoitteena on opettaa lasta syömään monipuolisesti ja terveellisesti. Ruokakasvatuksessa voidaan hyödyntää monia eri keinoja, kuten sapere -menetelmää, lastenkirjallisuutta, leikkiä sekä eri oppimisen osa-alueita ja myös ruokailutilanteita. Esittelen nämä edellä mainitut keinot tutkielmassani. Ruokakasvatuksen suunnitelmallisella toteutuksella voidaan parantaa kansanterveyttä sekä ehkäistä uusien kansansairauksien syntymistä. Ruokakasvatuksen avulla lapsi oppii ruoasta, ruokailutilanteista, ruokakulttuureista sekä ruoan tuottajista. Kandidaatintutkielmassani pohdin sitä, kuinka helppoa ruokakasvatusta on yhdistää osaksi varhaiskasvatusarjen jokapäiväisiä toimintoja ja kuinka ruokakasvatusta voidaan toteuttaa valtakunnallisen varhaiskasvatussuunnitelman perusteiden (2018) oppimisen osa-alueiden näkökulmista. Tutkielma on suunnattu varhaiskasvatuksen henkilöstön tueksi. Henkilöstön on tärkeä ymmärtää ruokakasvatuksen merkitys niin lapselle kuin yhteiskunnallekin. Erilaisten keinojen esittelyn kautta varhaiskasvatuksen henkilöstö saa tukea ja ideoita ruokakasvatuksen toteutukseen omassa arjessaan

    Macromolecular and electrical coupling between inner hair cells in the rodent cochlea

    Inner hair cells (IHCs) are the primary receptors for hearing. They are housed in the cochlea and convey sound information to the brain via synapses with the auditory nerve. IHCs have been thought to be electrically and metabolically independent from each other. We report that, upon developmental maturation, in mice 30% of the IHCs are electrochemically coupled in ‘mini-syncytia’. This coupling permits transfer of fluorescently-labeled metabolites and macromolecular tracers. The membrane capacitance, Ca2+-current, and resting current increase with the number of dye-coupled IHCs. Dual voltage-clamp experiments substantiate low resistance electrical coupling. Pharmacology and tracer permeability rule out coupling by gap junctions and purinoceptors. 3D electron microscopy indicates instead that IHCs are coupled by membrane fusion sites. Consequently, depolarization of one IHC triggers presynaptic Ca2+-influx at active zones in the entire mini-syncytium. Based on our findings and modeling, we propose that IHC-mini-syncytia enhance sensitivity and reliability of cochlear sound encoding

    Duplication/triplication mosaicism of EBF3 and expansion of the EBF3 neurodevelopmental disorder phenotype

    Deleterious variants in the transcription factor early B-cell factor 3 (EBF3) are known to cause a neurodevelopmental disorder (EBF3-NDD). We report eleven individuals with EBF3 variants, including an individual with a duplication/triplication mosaicism of a region encompassing EBF3 and a phenotype consistent with EBF3-NDD, which may reflect the importance of EBF3 gene-dosage for neurodevelopment. The phenotype of individuals in this cohort was quite mild compared to the core phenotype of previously described individuals. Although ataxia tended to wane with age, we show that cognitive difficulties may increase, and we recommend that individuals with EBF3-NDD have systematic neuropsychological follow-up.     Negotiating care in the context of Finnish and Italian elder care policies

    Negotiation is an integral part of all elder care, which by definition involves a relation between at least two people. In this article we analyse negotiations concerning elder care in the context of Finnish and Italian elder care policies. At the macro level negotiations on elder care are shaped by elder care policies and at the micro level by individual skills and resources. Our focus is on the negotiations on eligibility that take place when elders attempt to access care. The data consist of qualitative interviews with Finnish and Italian elders in need of care. The analysis of individual experiences of care negotiations reflects the implementation of elder care policies. The results indicate that the most negotiated eligibility criteria when seeking access to elder care are need, money and social relations. These criteria are negotiated when seeking eligibility to different sources of care: informal care, grey market, market-based, non-profit and public services. In Italy, negotiation is particularly crucial when accessing grey market care. Cash as the main Italian elder care policy tool tends to enhance the role of and need for negotiation. In Finland, a greater part of elder care is provided by the public sector and therefore the process of negotiation is more standardized than in Italy

    The art of governing local education markets : Municipalities and school choice in Finland

    Since the 1980s, numerous education reforms in Europe and beyond have sought to dismantle centralised bureaucracies and replace them with devolved systems of schooling that emphasise parental choice and competition between diversified types of schools. Despite this general trend, Finland continues to emphasise the municipal assignment of school places, albeit with the possibility of locally controlled choice. The aim of this paper is to elaborate on the ways in which Finnish local education authorities – involving both officials and politicians – define themselves in relation to the changing conceptions of the Nordic welfare state model. The paper discusses the social costs and benefits of school choice in addition to the kinds of techniques these authorities use when aiming to control and manage the social costs and benefits of school choice. Based on nine in-depth thematic interviews with local education authorities, the modalities – having to, being-able, wanting and knowing how – will be analysed.Peer reviewe

    Prediction of fatal or near-fatal cardiac arrhythmia events in patients with depressed left ventricular function after an acute myocardial infarction†

    To determine whether risk stratification tests can predict serious arrhythmic events after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF <= 0.40). A total of 5869 consecutive patients were screened in 10 European centres, and 312 patients (age 65 +/- 11 years) with a mean LVEF of 31 +/- 6% were included in the study. Heart rate variability/turbulence, ambient arrhythmias, signal-averaged electrocardiogram (SAECG), T-wave alternans, and programmed electrical stimulation (PES) were performed 6 weeks after AMI. The primary endpoint was ECG-documented ventricular fibrillation or symptomatic sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT). To document these arrhythmic events, the patients received an implantable ECG loop-recorder. There were 25 primary endpoints (8.0%) during the follow-up of 2 years. The strongest predictors of primary endpoint were measures of heart rate variability, e.g. hazard ratio (HR) for reduced very-low frequency component ( <5.7 ln ms(2)) adjusted for clinical variables was 7.0 (95% CI: 2.4-20.3, P <0.001). Induction of sustained monomorphic VT during PES (adjusted HR = 4.8, 95% CI, 1.7-13.4, P = 0.003) also predicted the primary endpoint. Fatal or near-fatal arrhythmias can be predicted by many risk stratification methods, especially by heart rate variability, in patients with reduced LVEF after AM
