    Psychological impact of identifying character strengths in people with psychosis

    A one group pre-post test design investigated the impact of identifying character strengths using the Values In Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS) with individuals with early psychosis (N = 29). Post-test improvements in positive affect and cognitive performance were observed. Neither self-esteem nor self-efficacy improved. The technique appears feasible for use within early intervention services. Adverse consequences should be monitored and additional components considered to enhance benefits

    Elucidation of the Average Molecular Structure of Argentinian Asphaltenes

    Petroleum asphaltenes were separated from three different Argentinian crude oils. The asphaltene fractions were extracted by precipitation employing n-pentane and n-heptane solvents, and the coprecipitated resins were removed via Soxhlet extraction. The asphaltenes were characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, powder X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. It was found that the asphaltene fractions present both a higher content of heteroatoms and a major degree of aromaticity, when n-heptane is employed. Average structural parameters were obtained by a comprehensive analysis of the experimental data, including those describing the central polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) cores and lateral chains. Thus, a hypothetical average molecular structure is proposed for the Argentinian asphaltenes. The average model molecules have a nucleus of PAHs arranged as pericondensed systems of 4-6 fused aromatic rings, with naphthenic groups and/or alkyl chains of 5-10 carbon long attached.Fil: Bava, Yanina Belén.     Development and Validation of the Japanese version of the Savoring Beliefs Inventory (SBI-J)

    Savoring is defined as people’s capacity to attend to positive experiences and to regulate positive feelings in response to positive events. The purpose of this study was to develop a Japanese adaptation of the Savoring Beliefs Inventory (SBI-J). The SBI is a self-report measure designed to assess individuals’ beliefs about their ability to savor positive experience within three temporal orientations involving future-focused anticipation of upcoming positive events, present-focused savoring of ongoing positive moments, and past-focused reminiscence about positive memories. After back-translating the SBI, we used an Internet survey to administer the instrument, along with a set of validational criterion measures, to a sample of 520 Japanese adults. Supporting hypotheses and replicating results with Western samples, confirmatory factor analyses revealed that responses to the SBI-J were best conceptualized in terms of five factors reflecting the three, intercorrelated temporal orientations (anticipating, savoring the moment, and reminiscing), as well as two “method” factors involving positive and negative item-valence. Strong, significant correlations among the three temporal SBI-J subscales also support the use of a total score that provides an overall summary of global savoring ability. Each of the three temporal subscales and total score showed acceptable internal consistency reliability and strong one-month test-retest reliability. Correlations of the SBI-J subscales and total score with criterion measures, and gender differences in mean SBI-J scores, support the convergent and discriminant validity of the instrument. These results indicate that the SBI-J is a valid and reliable tool for assessing savoring ability among Japanese adults

    Breaking down the delta wing vortex: The role of vorticity in the breakdown process

    Experimental x-wire measurements of the flowfield above a 70 and 75 deg flat plate delta wing were performed at a Reynolds number of 250,000. Grids were taken normal to the wing at various chordwise locations for angles of attack of 20 and 30 deg. Axial and azimuthal vorticity distributions were derived from the velocity fields. The dependence of circulation on distance from the vortex core and on chordwise location was also examined. The effects of nondimensionalization in comparison with other experimental data is made. The results indicate that the circulation distribution scales with the local semispan and grows in a nearly linear fashion in the chordwise direction. The spanwise distribution of axial vorticity is severely altered through the breakdown. The axial vorticity components with a negative sense, such as that found in the secondary vortex, seem to remain unaffected by changes in wind sweep or angle of attack, in direct contrast to the positive components. In addition, the inclusion of the local wing geometry into a previously derived correlation parameter allows the circulation of growing leading edge vortex flows to be reduced into a single curve

    How are rescaled range analyses affected by different memory and distributional properties? A Monte Carlo study

    In this paper, we present the results of Monte Carlo simulations for two popular techniques of long-range correlations detection - classical and modified rescaled range analyses. A focus is put on an effect of different distributional properties on an ability of the methods to efficiently distinguish between short and long-term memory. To do so, we analyze the behavior of the estimators for independent, short-range dependent, and long-range dependent processes with innovations from 8 different distributions. We find that apart from a combination of very high levels of kurtosis and skewness, both estimators are quite robust to distributional properties. Importantly, we show that R/S is biased upwards (yet not strongly) for short-range dependent processes, while M-R/S is strongly biased downwards for long-range dependent processes regardless of the distribution of innovations.Comment: 15 pages, 6 table
