    Free-algebra functors from a coalgebraic perspective

    Given a set Σ\Sigma of equations, the free-algebra functor FΣF_{\Sigma} associates to each set XX of variables the free algebra FΣ(X)F_{\Sigma}(X) over XX. Extending the notion of \emph{derivative} Σ\Sigma' for an arbitrary set Σ\Sigma of equations, originally defined by Dent, Kearnes, and Szendrei, we show that FΣF_\Sigma preserves preimages if and only if ΣΣ\Sigma \vdash \Sigma', i.e. Σ\Sigma derives its derivative Σ\Sigma'. If FΣF_\Sigma weakly preserves kernel pairs, then every equation p(x,x,y)=q(x,y,y)p(x,x,y)=q(x,y,y) gives rise to a term s(x,y,z,u)s(x,y,z,u) such that p(x,y,z)=s(x,y,z,z)p(x,y,z)=s(x,y,z,z) and q(x,y,z)=s(x,x,y,z)q(x,y,z)=s(x,x,y,z). In this case n-permutable varieties must already be permutable, i.e. Mal'cev. Conversely, if Σ\Sigma defines a Mal'cev variety, then FΣF_\Sigma weakly preserves kernel pairs.     The Restriction of Zoonotic PERV Transmission by Human APOBEC3G

    The human APOBEC3G protein is an innate anti-viral factor that can dominantly inhibit the replication of some endogenous and exogenous retroviruses. The prospects of purposefully harnessing such an anti-viral defense are under investigation. Here, long-term co-culture experiments were used to show that porcine endogenous retrovirus (PERV) transmission from pig to human cells is reduced to nearly undetectable levels by expressing human APOBEC3G in virus-producing pig kidney cells. Inhibition occurred by a deamination-independent mechanism, likely after particle production but before the virus could immortalize by integration into human genomic DNA. PERV inhibition did not require the DNA cytosine deaminase activity of APOBEC3G and, correspondingly, APOBEC3G-attributable hypermutations were not detected. In contrast, over-expression of the sole endogenous APOBEC3 protein of pigs failed to interfere significantly with PERV transmission. Together, these data constitute the first proof-of-principle demonstration that APOBEC3 proteins can be used to fortify the innate anti-viral defenses of cells to prevent the zoonotic transmission of an endogenous retrovirus. These studies suggest that human APOBEC3G-transgenic pigs will provide safer, PERV-less xenotransplantation resources and that analogous cross-species APOBEC3-dependent restriction strategies may be useful for thwarting other endogenous as well as exogenous retrovirus infections

    An early Holocene age for the Vatn landslide (Skagafjörður, central northern Iceland): Insights into the role of postglacial landsliding on slope development

    International audienceRecent research in northern Iceland has highlighted a significant period of rock slope instability during the early Holocene due to the combined effects of postglacial rebound, relative sea-level fall, and glacially oversteepened mountain slopes. Using the Vatn landslide (Skagafjörður, central northern Iceland) as an example, this paper focuses on this period and describes the sequence of events that led to landsliding. Geomorphic mapping, stratigraphical evidence, and both radiocarbon and tephra dating were applied. Collectively, the data acquired indicate that the landslide occurred between 11,400 and 10,790 cal. yr BP. However, while rock slope failure represents a significant disintegration of mountain slopes, this study suggests that large postglacial landslides might also play a role in arresting sediment transport from other hillslope processes rather than contributing large volumes of sediment
