    Dream and Variations: A Case Study of Transformational Leadership and Organizational Change at a Resilient Community Music School

    This qualitative case study investigates Paulus Center for Music, a large non-profit community music school, during a unique period of transition in its history. Located in Midwest, USA, Paulus began as a small violin school in the 19-aughts, and quickly grew into the largest community music school in the country. It established a college division and awarded bachelor’s and master’s degrees for over 25 years. After the death of its founder, the school was gifted to Big 10 University, where it operated for two decades. Big 10 divested from Paulus, soft launching it as an independent music school in the mid-1990s, issuing in a period of renewal and regrowth at Paulus. This dissertation is an investigation of that period, analyzed through the lens of DiMaggio & Powell’s institutional isomorphisms and Stevens’ organizational lifecycles. Paulus has four clear isomorphic periods in its history, with two distinct organizational lifecycles. Bourdieusian theory is also used to understand the field, habitus, and the different forms of capital at Paulus. This organization generates cultural capital, sustaining the school in good days and bad. Goffmanian theory analyzes key dramaturgical players and factors in the school’s transition into an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Findings suggest that due to its entrepreneurial spirit, Paulus is most successful when it self-governs. The school suffers when it is unable to live up to its mission due to external restrictions and constraints placed on it. Creativity thrives at Paulus, and when creativity thrives, Paulus thrives

    In Vivo Delivery of Nitric Oxide-Sensing, Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

    Detection of nitric oxide (NO) in vivo by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) is based on the fluorescent properties of SWNT and the ability of NO to quench the fluorescence signal. Alterations of the signal can be utilized to detect a small molecule in vivo that has not previously been possible by other assay techniques. The protocols described here explain the techniques used to prepare NO-detecting SWNTs and to administer them to mice by both intravenous and subcutaneous routes.     A Manned Mars Mission (M3) design study is proposed. The purpose of M3 is to transport 10 personnel and a habitat with all required support systems and supplies from low Earth orbit (LEO) to the surface of Mars and, after an eight-man surface expedition of 3 months, to return the personnel safely to LEO. The proposed hardware design is based on systems and components of demonstrated high capability and reliability. The mission design builds on past mission experience, but incorporates innovative design approaches to achieve mission priorities. Those priorities, in decreasing order of importance, are safety, reliability, minimum personnel transfer time, minimum weight, and minimum cost. The design demonstrates the feasibility and flexibility of a Waverider transfer module

    Wiki or Word? Evaluating Tools for Collaborative Writing and Editing

    Businesses and other organizations are relying increasingly on virtual teams to perform a range of business activities. A key challenge in utilizing virtual teams is to support collaboration among team members who are separated by distance and/or time. In this paper we use a research model based on a combination of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Task Technology Fit (TTF) model to examine two approaches to supporting students in collaboratively creating and editing a report for an introductory course in information systems. In our study, one group of students used MS Word with Track Changes turned on combined with emailing the document among students. A second group was provided access to a wiki where they created the report. Results show that students found the Word and email combination more useful and easier to use than the wiki environment in completing the project. Further, there was no perceived difference in the effort of collaboration between the two methods. This study raises questions about the widely held belief that web-based collaboration platforms are superior to emailing documents among collaborators

    The mission of this project is to design and fabricate a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) fixed-wing drone for use by firefighters and other emergency services. This vehicle will be designed for uses that include surveying wildfires, as well as spotting vehicular accidents, urban fires, and floods. Current drones available on the market are expensive or not designed specifically for emergency response. Our goal is to develop a working prototype of a vehicle that will be able to collect and relay important data such as live video and thermal images in addition to other measurements such as air velocity and humidity

    Field and laboratory studies were conducted during 1989-1994 to investigate the overwintering strategies of hatching turtles representing four families native to western Nebraska. Whereas hatchling snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) and spiny soft-shelled turtles (Apalone spinifera) overwinter in aquatic habitats, yellow mud turtles (Kinosternon flavescens) and ornate box turtles (Terrapene ornata) burrow below the natal nest and hibernate in sandy soil. Painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) overwinter within their shallow natal nests, but this species, and T. ornata, tolerate extensive tissue freezing. Overwintering behaviors of these species are consistent with indices of physiological cold hardiness and patterns of geographic distribution. Frost commonly penetrated and persisted below 10 cm, the soil depth as which hatchling C. picta routinely hibernate. Field and laboratory data suggested that hatchling C. picta survive either by remaining super-cooled (unfrozen) or by tolerating tissue freezing, the strategy employed depending on prevailing physiological and microenvironmental conditions. Whereas relatively lower temperatures can be survived in the supercooled state, supercooling capacity may be limited via the inoculation of body fluids by environmental ice. Alternatively, wheras freeze tolerence fortuitously is promoted by ice inoculation, this strategy may be viable only at relatively high subzero temperatures. A cold-hardiness stragefy based on both survival mechanisms may promote winter survival in hatchling C. picta by conferring protection under dynamic physiological and microenvironmental conditions.     Possible Lingering Effects of Multiple Past Concussions

    Background. The literature on lingering or “cumulative” effects of multiple concussions is mixed. The purpose of this study was to examine whether athletes with a history of three or more concussions perform more poorly on neuropsychological testing or report more subjective symptoms during a baseline, preseason evaluation. Hypothesis. Athletes reporting three or more past concussions would perform more poorly on preseason neurocognitive testing. Study Design. Case-control study. Methods. An archival database including 786 male athletes who underwent preseason testing with a computerized battery (ImPACT) was used to select the participants. Twenty-six athletes, between the ages of 17 and 22 with a history of three or more concussions, were identified. Athletes with no history of concussion were matched, in a case-control fashion, on age, education, self-reported ADHD, school, sport, and, when possible, playing position and self-reported academic problems. Results. The two groups were compared on the four neuropsychological composite scores from ImPACT using multivariate analysis of variance followed by univariate ANOVAs. MANOVA revealed no overall significant effect. Exploratory ANOVAs were conducted using Verbal Memory, Visual Memory, Reaction Time, Processing Speed, and Postconcussion Scale composite scores as dependent variables. There was a significant effect for only the Verbal Memory composite. Conclusions. Although inconclusive, the results suggest that some athletes with multiple concussions could have lingering memory deficits
