Phosphoribosylamine (PRA) is the first intermediate in the common pathway to purines and thiamine and is generated in bacteria by glutamine phosphoribosylpyrophosphate (PRPP) amidotransferase (EC 2.4.2.14) from PRPP and glutamine. Genetic data have indicated that multiple, non-PRPP amidotransferase mechanisms exist to generate PRA sufficient for thiamine but not purine synthesis. Here we describe the purification and identification of an activity (present in both Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica) that synthesizes PRA from ribose 5-phosphate and glutamine/asparagine. A purification resulting in greater than a 625-fold increase in specific activity identified 8 candidate proteins. Of the candidates, overexpression of AphA (EC 3.1.3.2), a periplasmic class B nonspecific acid phosphatase, significantly increased activity in partially purified extracts. Native purification of AphA to >95% homogeneity determined that the periplasmic L-asparaginase II, AnsB (EC 3.5.1.1), co-purified with AphA and was also necessary for PRA formation. The potential physiological relevance of AphA and AnsB in contributing to thiamine biosynthesis in vivo is discussed

This chapter describes the application of lasers, specifically diode lasers, in the area of quantum key distribution (QKD). First, we motivate the distribution of cryptographic keys based on quantum physical properties of light, give a brief introduction to QKD assuming the reader has no or very little knowledge about cryptography, and briefly present the state-of-the-art of QKD. In the second half of the chapter we describe, as an example of a real-world QKD system, the system deployed between the University of Calgary and SAIT Polytechnic. We conclude the chapter with a brief discussion of quantum networks and future steps.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figure

The Saint of the Sick and the Poor One man’s mission to celebrate his Mexican village saint here in NYC, for those who can’t go back home By Itzel Castro New York City, United States  — Amid an altar covered with offerings of marigold flowers, stands a porcelain statue of San Lucas. Known also as “Luke the Evangelist,” the three feet tall figurine is dressed in intricately-designed vestments, made of real red silk and covered with crucifix patterns woven in gold thread. A crown on its head glimmers under the lights. “He is the saint of the village,” said Alejandro Morales, 43, a native from Puebla, Mexico and the founding organizer of the San Lucas celebration that takes place every year in Bath Beach, Brooklyn. As he moves the statue to the middle of the altar, he looks back at San Lucas and adds, “We do this in part for those who can’t go back home.” The celebration honors San Lucas, a saint beloved in San Lucas Atzala, a village in Puebla located in Central Mexico. According to the U.S. Census, in New York City, there are around 319,000 Mexican immigrants. The majority of them come from Morales’s home state of Puebla and they make up the third largest Latinx diaspora. The celebration that Morales founded gathers poblanos, people from Puebla, many of whom are undocumented and can’t go back home. In past years, thousands have attended. The celebration is community funded and it creates a sense of unity. Link to capstone project: https://www.castro2018capstone.co

    Shaping Chilean Feminism

    Get PDF
The early 1990s are marked by worldwide feminist movements and women’s suffrage. Women mobilized through feminist groups that demanded political rights, marital rights and labor rights. In the case of Chile, advocating for women’s suffrage was an extensive process that required mass unity and mobilization through agitative media. By 1935, one of the most prominent feminist leaders, Elena Cafferena, co-founded The Movement for the Emancipation of Chilean Women (MEMCH) which became a critical actor in the Chilean women\u27s rights battle. This case demonstrates how working women and “elite women” worked in collaboration for diverse demands within the movement. This paper aims to trace the Chilean feminist movement and point out which actors and political tools kept the movement alive, thus allowing for female liberation and a direct challenge to the patriarchal structure of Chilean society

From “Cowardice” to “Shellshock”: The Definition and Treatment of Mental Health in the United States Marine Corps During the Age of the Great War

The aim of my master’s thesis is to study how the United States’ Marine Corps recognized, defined, and treated mental health issues during the Great War and how this translated into the treatment of Marines by their peers and commanding officers. Similar to other countries that fought in the Great War, also referred to as World War I, the United States witnessed intense discussions about the psychological effects of war. The question of whether and how modern warfare affected troops’ mental health was addressed by all branches of the United States’ military. Yet, the issue of mental health in the Marine Corps has received little scholarly attention. To fill this gap, my thesis will analyze official Marine Corps’ documents such as protocols, orders, communiques, as well as medical reports, bulletins, and journals. In addition, it will gauge soldiers’ personal narratives such as diaries, letters, and memoirs. The analysis of these primary sources mirrors the approach taken by Joanna Bourke and is classified as a New Military History. I found a gradual shift within the Marine Corps towards acceptance of mental illness as an injury to be treated as opposed to cowardice. This was seemingly a gradual increase in recognition of mental illness as seen through various editions and publications of officer’s manuals, legislative actions, and medical journals and bulletins

How Does Bullying Affect Females in School?

    Get PDF
Bullying is a major issue that schools are still having issues with. Students today are being bullied the most during their middle school years. In order to understand how we can address these issues and prevent it from continuing in this community, this report answers the following research questions: Is bullying a problem and why? What are the solutions or interventions to prevent bullying? What changes from elementary schools to middle schools that increase bullying for females? And how can we prevent females from bullying or becoming victimized? In a review of the literature on bullying from a female\u27s perspective, the research shows that females are usually victimized by other females through social and verbal threats. This issue ranges from spreading rumors to exclusion of others. Another reason females are bullied is because of puberty. Another important finding is that female perpetrators use relational aggression to bully others. This report presents an interview of a local middle school to see what measures they have against bullying. The findings after conducting the interview showed that a major component to bullying in middle school is social media. The bullying continues to follow victims’ homes because of social media opportunities. The recommendation to prevent bullying is an informational blog or flyer, in both English and Spanish, for parents that addresses the impact that social media has on bullying and several tips for parents to reduce bullying in this community

    My First Year Research Experience

Hello, my name is Itzel Guillen. I am a graduate of Rio Grande High School, and a freshman at UNM. I am a participant in the FYRE (First Year Research Experience) program. FYRE gave me the opportunity to work more on a project that I participated in while I was in high school: RAPS. My research interest is the response of adults who were part of the project. As a freshman, finding a mentor can be hard. Many students need more experience, but there may not be many open opportunities. For my mentor, I contacted Courtney FitzGerald at the UNM PRC. I met Courtney through the RAPS project while I was in high school. For FYRE, I wanted to work with RAPS project data. I was able to do this with Courtney as my mentor.https://digitalrepository.unm.edu/prc-posters-presentations/1000/thumbnail.jp
