Short-Lived Circumstellar Interaction in the Low-Luminosity Type IIP SN 2016bkv
While interaction with circumstellar material is known to play an important
role in Type IIn supernovae (SNe), analyses of the more common SNe IIP and IIL
have not traditionally included interaction as a significant power source.
However, recent campaigns to observe SNe within days of explosion have revealed
narrow emission lines of high-ionization species in the earliest spectra of
luminous SNe II of all subclasses. These "flash ionization" features indicate
the presence of a confined shell of material around the progenitor star. Here
we present the first low-luminosity (LL) SN to show flash ionization features,
SN 2016bkv. This SN peaked at mag and has H{\alpha} expansion
velocities under 1350 km/s around maximum light, placing it at the faint/slow
end of the distribution of SNe IIP (similar to SN 2005cs). The light-curve
shape of SN 2016bkv is also extreme among SNe IIP. A very strong initial peak
could indicate additional luminosity from circumstellar interaction. A very
small fall from the plateau to the nickel tail indicates unusually large
production of radioactive nickel compared to other LL SNe IIP. A comparison
between nebular spectra of SN 2016bkv and models raises the possibility that SN
2016bkv is an electron-capture supernova.Comment: Updated to match published version in ApJ. Photometry table and SYN++

From Discovery to the First Month of the Type II Supernova 2023ixf: High and Variable Mass Loss in the Final Year Before Explosion
We present the discovery of Type II supernova (SN) 2023ixf in M101, among the
closest core-collapse SNe in the last several decades, and follow-up
photometric and spectroscopic observations in the first month of its evolution.
The light curve is characterized by a rapid rise ( days) to a
luminous peak ( mag) and plateau ( mag)
extending to days with a smooth decline rate of mag
day. During the rising phase, color shows blueward evolution,
followed by redward evolution in the plateau phase. Prominent flash features of
hydrogen, helium, carbon, and nitrogen dominate the spectra up to
days after first light, with a transition to a higher ionization state in the
first days. Both the color and flash ionization states suggest
a rise in the temperature, indicative of a delayed shock-breakout inside dense
circumstellar material (CSM). From the timescales of CSM interaction, we
estimate its compact radial extent of cm. We then
construct numerical light-curve models based on both continuous and eruptive
mass-loss scenarios shortly before explosion. For the continuous mass-loss
scenario, we infer a range of mass-loss history with in the final years before explosion, with a potentially
decreasing mass loss of in
years towards the explosion. For the eruptive mass-loss scenario, we favor
eruptions releasing of the envelope at about a year before
explosion, which result in CSM with mass and extent similar to the continuous
scenario. We discuss the implications of the available multi-wavelength
constraints obtained thus far on the progenitor candidate and SN 2023ixf to our
variable CSM models.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJ
The electron-capture origin of supernova 2018zd
In the transitional mass range ( 8-10 solar masses) between white dwarf
formation and iron core-collapse supernovae, stars are expected to produce an
electron-capture supernova. Theoretically, these progenitors are thought to be
super-asymptotic giant branch stars with a degenerate O+Ne+Mg core, and
electron capture onto Ne and Mg nuclei should initiate core collapse. However,
no supernovae have unequivocally been identified from an electron-capture
origin, partly because of uncertainty in theoretical predictions. Here we
present six indicators of electron-capture supernovae and show that supernova
2018zd is the only known supernova having strong evidence for or consistent
with all six: progenitor identification, circumstellar material, chemical
composition, explosion energy, light curve, and nucleosynthesis. For supernova
2018zd, we infer a super-asymptotic giant branch progenitor based on the faint
candidate in the pre-explosion images and the chemically-enriched circumstellar
material revealed by the early ultraviolet colours and flash spectroscopy. The
light-curve morphology and nebular emission lines can be explained with the low
explosion energy and neutron-rich nucleosynthesis produced in an
electron-capture supernova. This identification provides insights into the
complex stellar evolution, supernova physics, cosmic nucleosynthesis, and
remnant populations in the transitional mass range.Comment: Author version of the published letter in Nature Astronomy, 28 June

Induction of Neuronal Death by Microglial AGE-Albumin: Implications for Alzheimer’s Disease
Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have long been considered as potent molecules promoting neuronal cell death and contributing to neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In this study, we demonstrate that AGE-albumin, the most abundant AGE product in human AD brains, is synthesized in activated microglial cells and secreted into the extracellular space. The rate of AGE-albumin synthesis in human microglial cells is markedly increased by amyloid-β exposure and oxidative stress. Exogenous AGE-albumin upregulates the receptor protein for AGE (RAGE) and augments calcium influx, leading to apoptosis of human primary neurons. In animal experiments, soluble RAGE (sRAGE), pyridoxamine or ALT-711 prevented Aβ-induced neuronal death in rat brains. Collectively, these results provide evidence for a new mechanism by which microglial cells promote death of neuronal cells through synthesis and secretion of AGE-albumin, thereby likely contributing to neurodegenerative diseases such as AD
