The cyclization of a diazoketone with boron trifluoride etherate

    Get PDF
Normally, a diazoketone reacts with an acid to form a substituted methyl ketone. When a nucleophilic center is present at an α or β position of R, this reaction may lead to the formation of a cyclic ketone (11). It was the purpose of this research to investigate the cyclization of the aliphatic methoxydiazoketone, 1-diazo-4-methoxy-4-phenyl-2-butanone (I), when treated with BF3 in ether, to give the five-membered ring 5-phenyltetrahydrofuranone-3 (II)

Beyond the Dark Ages : modern Jewish historians and medieval Judaism

    Get PDF
It has been more than 30 years since the publication of Professor Y.H. Yerushalmi's Zakhor: Jewish History and Jewish Memory. Yerushalmi's work has impacted a new generation of Jewish historians, despite its pessimism regarding the role of history as a substitute for tradition, as well as its doubt that the historian's craft will resonate within Jewish memory. My focus in this essay is on the four greatest modern historians of Judaism: Heinrich Graetz, Simon Dubnow, Yitzhak "Fritz" Baer, and Salo Baron. I investigate each historian's analysis of medieval Jewish rationalism—as represented by the towering figure of Moses Maimonides—and each historian's assessment of Kabbalah, Jewish mysticism. My goal in this effort is to challenge Professor Yerushalmi's pessimism and to highlight how historians of Jewish faith and life can enrich our understanding of tradition, memory and the past. I do not make the claim that Zakhor is wrong—in fact, Yerushalmi's analysis of History and Memory is brilliant. No doubt, History will likely never replace Memory and tradition. Yet, there is more room for hope. I believe that Yerushalmi is too pessimistic in his assessment of the abiding power of the historian of Judaism and Jewish life to instill faith and hope for the future. Perhaps one day, the yeshiva seminary will be able to engage the historian's classroom in a constructive and inspiring manner. That is my hope in writing this essay.Articleapplication/pdfresearch repor

Neuropsychological evaluation of children with intracranial tumors: impact of treatment modalities

    Get PDF
Antineoplastic treatment has a deleterious effect on intellectual functions, which is mainly attributable to radiotherapy. With the object of determining the neuropsychological disturbances associated with brain irradiation in the child, and to try to differentiate them from the effects caused by the other types of treatment (surgical and chemotherapy) as well as from the effects of the tumor itself, a cross-sectional study was carried out in 25 survivors of medial edge intracranial tumors. In order to monitor the effect of systemic chemotherapy on the cognitive functions, and the effect of prolonged absence from school, two control groups were formed, one made up of subjects treated with chemotherapy for extracranial tumors, and the other of patients with non-malignant chronic disease. Neuropsychological functions were measured using the Spanish version of the Wechsler scale, as well as the following tests: Spreen-Benton, ITPA and TALE scales, Yuste Memory Test, Thurstone Attention Test, and the Rey Complex Figure. In addition to a progressive decline found in the full scale intelligence quotient in children irradiated for intracranial tumors, variance analysis showed that these patients deteriorate mainly in visual attention and memory, but also significantly in verbal fluency and in the Performance Intelligence Quotient and all its subtests, when compared to the control groups. Visual attention and the Wechsler Picture Arrangement and Block Designs, were the tests whose decline correlated with the total radiation administered. The article relates this specific neuropsychological injury with the total brain irradiation dose but also with the structures located in the cone-down fields of irradiation to boost regions in the middle edge intracranial content

Politics and religion in the Warsaw Ghetto : beyond the Labor Zionist narrative

    Get PDF
The Jewish uprising against the Nazis in April 1943 in the Warsaw Ghetto has achieved legendary status in the remembrance of the Holocaust. But how has the revolt been portrayed and interpreted by historians both Jewish and non-Jewish? In Israel—where Labor Zionism under David Ben-Gurion dominated the society and politics of the first thirty years of the Jewish State—the ideology of the founders has been selective in its understanding of the Holocaust, specifically the revolt in the Warsaw Ghetto. Political ideology has distorted the understanding of past events. Both Revisionist Zionism and the Jewish religion played a major role in the life and fiery end of the ghetto, yet the Labor Zionists have ignored both phenomena in their telling of the story of the Holocaust. With the rise of post-Zionists in Israel, the triumph of right-wing Zionists in the political realm, and the religious revival of Judaism in the Jewish State, new narratives that have been ignored are now coming to the fore. The roles of Revisionist Zionism and Orthodox Judaism are finally being explored in an attempt to overcome the skewing of the past by the dominant political ideology in the State of Israel. The Revisionist followers of Jabotinsky were bold fighters against the Nazis in Warsaw—their role in the rebellion deserves to be investigated and revealed. As well, religious Jews rebelled against the Nazis through their commitment to their faith. Menachem Ziemba, the last rabbi in the Warsaw Ghetto, overturned centuries of martyrdom, advocating military resistance as a demand of Jewish law. This essay explores new narratives that deserve to see the light of day, providing a more accurate picture of the events of the Shoah and the role of religion in the modern world.Articleapplication/pdfresearch repor

Joint Time-and Event-Triggered Scheduling in the Linux Kernel

There is increasing interest in using Linux in the real-time domain due to the emergence of cloud and edge computing, the need to decrease costs, and the growing number of complex functional and non-functional requirements of real-time applications. Linux presents a valuable opportunity as it has rich hardware support, an open-source development model, a well-established programming environment, and avoids vendor lock-in. Although Linux was initially developed as a general-purpose operating system, some real-time capabilities have been added to the kernel over many years to increase its predictability and reduce its scheduling latency. Unfortunately, Linux currently has no support for time-triggered (TT) scheduling, which is widely used in the safety-critical domain for its determinism, low run-time scheduling latency, and strong isolation properties. We present an enhancement of the Linux scheduler as a new low-overhead TT scheduling class to support offline table-driven scheduling of tasks on multicore Linux nodes. Inspired by the Slot shifting algorithm, we complement the new scheduling class with a low overhead slot shifting manager running on a non-time-triggered core to provide guaranteed execution time to real-time aperiodic tasks by using the slack of the time-triggered tasks and avoiding high-overhead table regeneration for adding new periodic tasks. Furthermore, we evaluate our implementation on server-grade hardware with Intel Xeon Scalable Processor.Comment: to appear in Operating Systems Platforms for Embedded Real-Time applications (OSPERT) workshop 2023 co-hosted with 35th Euromicro conference on Real-time system

« Il n’y a pas si déplorable puissance dans la Révolution qui n’ait trouvé des panégyristes ; Robespierre, Babeuf, Charette et d’autres ont eu des historiens empressés de faire leur éloge ; il était réservé au Directoire de faire seul exception. Tous l’ont maudit, personne ne l’a loué. Multifactorial Analysis of Differences Between Sporadic Breast Cancers and Cancers Involving BRCA1 and BRCA2 Mutations

    Get PDF
Background: We have previously demonstrated that breast cancers associated with inherited BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations differ from each other in their histopathologic appearances and that each of these types differs from breast cancers in patients unselected for family history (i.e., sporadic cancers). We have now conducted a more detailed examination of cytologic and architectural features of these tumors. Methods: Specimens of tumor tissue (5-µm-thick sections) were examined independently by two pathologists, who were unaware of the case or control subject status, for the presence of cell mitosis, lymphocytic infiltration, continuous pushing margins, and solid sheets of cancer cells; cell nuclei, cell nucleoli, cell necrosis, and cell borders were also evaluated. The resulting data were combined with previously available information on tumor type and tumor grade and further evaluated by multifactorial analysis. All statistical tests are two-sided. Results: Cancers associated with BRCA1 mutations exhibited higher mitotic counts (P = .001), a greater proportion of the tumor with a continuous pushing margin (P<.0001), and more lymphocytic infiltration (P = .002) than sporadic (i.e., control) cancers. Cancers associated with BRCA2 mutations exhibited a higher score for tubule formation (fewer tubules) (P = .0002), a higher proportion of the tumor perimeter with a continuous pushing margin (P<.0001), and a lower mitotic count (P = .003) than control cancers. Conclusions: Our study has identified key features of the histologic phenotypes of breast cancers in carriers of mutant BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. This information may improve the classification of breast cancers in individuals with a family history of the disease and may ultimately aid in the clinical management of patients.
