    Haemoglobin status of adult non-pregnant Kazakh women living in Kzyl-Orda region, Kazakhstan.

    OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of anaemia among adult non-pregnant women in the Kzyl-Orda region of Kazakhstan, and to determine the association between haemoglobin concentration and anthropometric, socioeconomic, reproductive and dietary factors. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study using a randomly selected sample. Subjects were interviewed, and finger-prick blood samples and anthropometric measurements were collected. Associations between haemoglobin concentration and anthropometric and questionnaire data were evaluated by sequential linear regression analysis. SETTING: Health centres in Kazalinsk, Djalagash and Zhanakorgan districts of Kzyl-Orda region, Kazakhstan. SUBJECTS: Three-thousand six-hundred and twenty-five non-pregnant women aged 18-45 y randomly selected from health centre records. RESULTS: Iron deficiency anaemia, as reflected by low haemoglobin levels (Hb<12 g/dl), was detected in 40.2% of the total sample. There was a significant curvilinear relationship between haemoglobin concentration and age, with the nadir of the curve in the 30-40 y age-group. Haemoglobin concentration was found to be positively associated with body mass index (BMI) and socioeconomic factors. Significant negative associations were found between haemoglobin concentration and duration of menses, use of the intra-uterine contraceptive device and the consumption of tea. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that iron deficiency anaemia is present at considerable levels among adult women living in Kzyl-Orda region, Kazakhstan, and provides important baseline information for future research and public health interventions.     Known densely substituted 3-amino-5,7,8-trichloro-6-hydroxycinnoline-4-carbonitrile was synthesized using a new synthetic protocol involving chloranil and malonitrile via quinone methide formation. This one-pot synthesis occurs under base mediated conditions in a polar medium. The method involves condensation of excess malononitrile with chloranil in ethanol at reflux to 2-(2,4,5-trichloro-3-hydroxy-6-oxocyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-ylidene) malononitrile. This is an atom efficient, simple and effective procedure for the preparation of a highly substituted cinnoline that can serve as a relay to antimalarial prototypes

    Artikel ini mendeskripsikan untuk memberikan pelayanan kepada Santri Taman Pendidikan Al-Qur’an (TPA) At-Taqwa Muhammadiyah Enrekang dalam menumbuhkan karakter sejak dini dengan tujuan agar mampu memahami dan mengamalkan Al-Qur’an serta memiliki akhlakul karimah. Metode pelayanan yang digunakan dalam penulisan artikel ini dengan metode Behavior. Peneliti melakukan kajian dengan bersentuhan langsung dengan santriwan/santriwati yang ada di TPA At-Taqwa Muhammadiyah Enrekang. Hasil dari pelatihan ini menunjukkan bahwa dari 6 peran TPA sudah bisa dikatakan berperan baik dalam pendidikan karakter yang dicanangkan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan Nasional yaitu (1) Peran TPA dalam membantu santri mengagumi dan mncintai Al-Qur’an sebagai bacaan yang istimewa (religius), (2) Peran TPA dalam membimbing santri membaca al- qur’an dengan baik dan benar (gemar membaca), (3) Peran TPA dalam mengajarkan sholat 5 waktu dengan tata cara yang benar (disiplin), (4) Peran TPA dalam membina santri menguasai hafalan sejumlah surat pendek atau ayat pilihan dan do’a sehari-hari (mandiri), (5) Peran TPA dalam mengarahkan berakhlak sosial yang baik sesuai dengan tuntunan Islam (peduli sosial), (6) Peran TPA dalam membantu santri menulis huruf Arab dengan baik dan benar (kreatif)

    A Comparison of Machine Learning Methods for Cross-Domain Few-Shot Learning

    We present an empirical evaluation of machine learning algorithms in cross-domain few-shot learning based on a fixed pre-trained feature extractor. Experiments were performed in five target domains (CropDisease, EuroSAT, Food101, ISIC and ChestX) and using two feature extractors: a ResNet10 model trained on a subset of ImageNet known as miniImageNet and a ResNet152 model trained on the ILSVRC 2012 subset of ImageNet. Commonly used machine learning algorithms including logistic regression, support vector machines, random forests, nearest neighbour classification, naïve Bayes, and linear and quadratic discriminant analysis were evaluated on the extracted feature vectors. We also evaluated classification accuracy when subjecting the feature vectors to normalisation using p-norms. Algorithms originally developed for the classification of gene expression data—the nearest shrunken centroid algorithm and LDA ensembles obtained with random projections—were also included in the experiments, in addition to a cosine similarity classifier that has recently proved popular in few-shot learning. The results enable us to identify algorithms, normalisation methods and pre-trained feature extractors that perform well in cross-domain few-shot learning. We show that the cosine similarity classifier and ℓ² -regularised 1-vs-rest logistic regression are generally the best-performing algorithms. We also show that algorithms such as LDA yield consistently higher accuracy when applied to ℓ² -normalised feature vectors. In addition, all classifiers generally perform better when extracting feature vectors using the ResNet152 model instead of the ResNet10 model

    Purpurogallin-A heme binding component of oak galls

    Recently, it has been shown that Purpurogallin (PPG), an orange benztropolone constituent of oak galls and its derivative, CU-CPT22, can compete with the binding of the specific lipoprotein ligand to toll-like receptors (TLRs), which are type I transmembrane proteins. These recognize pathogen-derived macromolecules that play a key role in the innate immune system. This system provides an attractive target for the treatment of various immune disorders. Notably, PPG also interacts with various metals and its mode of action against HIV in vitro may involve inhibition of metal containing integrases. In the current study, an optimised synthesis of PPG is presented together with its gas phase behaviour (probed by mass spectrometry) as well as its redox behaviour with porphyrins such as heme. This interaction may also explain its effects at metal containing integrases within HIV in vitro as well as its action during processing of iron complexes within Plasmodia. This compound could serve as a novel prototype for the synthesis of novel redox active antimalarials

    Antioxidant Activity of the Phenolic Leaf Extracts from Monechma ciliatum in Stabilization of Corn Oil

    The total phenolic content and the antioxidan potential of methanolic extract (ME), ethyl acetate extract (EAE), and hexane extract (HE) from Monechma ciliatum leaves (MCL) were evaluated. The Folin-Ciocalteu, b-carotene bleaching, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and the accelerated oxidation methods were used for evaluation. Both the extraction yield and the antioxidant activity (AOA) were strongly dependent on the solvent. Among the extracts, ME exhibited highest total phenolic compounds (TPC) and IC50 values for DPPH, followed by EAE and HE, respectively. Peroxide value (PV), anisidine value (AV) conjugated dienes (CD), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were taken as the parameters for evaluation of stabilization efficacy of MCL extracts and results revealed MCL to be a potent antioxidant for the stabilization of corn oil. As a general trend, increased AOA was observed for increased extract concentration. The predominant phenolic compounds identified by HPLC-DAD in MCL extracts were p-coumaric acid, vanillin and ferulic acid

    Global stability of enzymatic chain of full reversible Michaelis-Menten reactions

    International audienceWe consider a chain of metabolic reactions catalyzed by enzymes, of reversible Michaelis-Menten type with full dynamics, i.e. not reduced with any quasi- steady state approximations. We study the corresponding dynamical system and show its global stability if the equilibrium exists. If the system is open, the equilibrium may not exist. The main tool is monotone systems theory. Finally we study the implications of these results for the study of coupled genetic-metabolic systems

    Diagnostic comparison of malaria infection in peripheral blood, placental blood and placental biopsies in Cameroonian parturient women

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In sub-Saharan Africa, <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>malaria in pregnancy presents an enormous diagnostic challenge. The epidemiological and clinical relevance of the different types of malaria diagnosis as well as risk factors associated with malaria infection at delivery were investigated.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>In a cross-sectional survey, 306 women reporting for delivery in the Mutenegene maternity clinic, Fako division, South West province, Cameroon were screened for <it>P. falciparum </it>in peripheral blood, placental blood and placental tissue sections by microscopy. Information relating to the use of intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy with sulphadoxine/pyrimethamine, history of fever attack, infant birth weights and maternal anaemia were recorded.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among these women, <it>P. falciparum </it>infection was detected in 5.6%, 25.5% and 60.5% of the cases in peripheral blood, placental blood and placental histological sections respectively. Placental histology was more sensitive (97.4%) than placental blood film (41.5%) and peripheral blood (8.0%) microscopy. In multivariate analysis, age (≤ 20 years old) (OR = 4.61, 95% CI = 1.47 – 14.70), history of fever attack (OR = 2.98, 95% CI = 1.58 – 5.73) were significant risk factors associated with microscopically detected parasitaemia. The use of ≥ 2 SP doses (OR = 0.18, 95% CI = 0.06 – 0.52) was associated with a significant reduction in the prevalence of microscopic parasitaemia at delivery. Age (>20 years) (OR = 0.34, 95% CI = 0.15 – 0.75) was the only significant risk factor associated with parasitaemia diagnosed by histology only in univariate analysis. Microscopic parasitaemia (OR = 2.74, 95% CI = 1.33–5.62) was a significant risk factor for maternal anaemia at delivery, but neither infection detected by histology only, nor past infection were associated with increased risk of anaemia.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Placenta histological examination was the most sensitive indicator of malaria infection at delivery. Microscopically detected parasitaemia was associated with increased risk of maternal anaemia at delivery, but not low-grade parasitaemia detected by placental histology only.</p
