BLADE: Filter Learning for General Purpose Computational Photography

The Rapid and Accurate Image Super Resolution (RAISR) method of Romano, Isidoro, and Milanfar is a computationally efficient image upscaling method using a trained set of filters. We describe a generalization of RAISR, which we name Best Linear Adaptive Enhancement (BLADE). This approach is a trainable edge-adaptive filtering framework that is general, simple, computationally efficient, and useful for a wide range of problems in computational photography. We show applications to operations which may appear in a camera pipeline including denoising, demosaicing, and stylization

Six sports chronicles were analyzed, three from general newspapers and three from sports press, related to the FIFA World Cup Final (South Africa). Each sample was analyzed based on the used lexicon (war, law, recreation, magic and society), the word grouping (spare words, phrases and set phrases), and the referential and metaphorical aspects of the speech. The conclusion was that all the lexicons under analysis were evenly blended throughout each chronicle except for the war language, which was used more extensively. Additionally, a relationship was discovered between the size of a chronicle and the usage of the lexicons in the chronicles from the sports newspapers. That same relationship did not exist in the case of the general press. Also, the study concludes that the referential speech prevailed over the metaphorical. Finally, spare words were found more often in the samples than other forms of word grouping. This statement is a realization of the previous one, as phrases were more popular in the methaphorical speech

Molecular Analysis of Activation-Induced Cytidine Deaminase Gene in Immunoglobulin-E Deficient Patients

Understanding how class switch recombination (CSR) is regulated to produce immunoglobulin E (IgE) has become fundamental because of the dramatic increase in the prevalence of IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reactions. CSR requires the induction of the enzyme AICDA in B cells. Mutations in AICDA have been linked to Hyper-IgM syndrome (HIGM2), which shows absence of switching to IgE as well as to IgG and IgA. Although isolated IgE deficiency is a rare entity, here we show some individuals with normal serum IgM, IgG, and IgA levels that had undetectable total serum IgE levels. We have analyzed the AICDA gene in these individuals to determine if there are mutations in AICDA that could lead to selective IgE deficiency. Conformational sensitive gel electrophoresis (CSGE) and sequencing analysis of AICDA coding sequences demonstrated sequence heterogeneity due to 5923A/G and 7888C/T polymorphisms, but did not reveal any novel mutation that might explain the selective IgE deficit

Induction of DNA double-strand breaks and cellular senescence by human respiratory syncytial virus

Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) accounts for the majority of lower respiratory tract infections during infancy and childhood and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. HRSV provokes a proliferation arrest and characteristic syncytia in cellular systems such as immortalized epithelial cells. We show here that HRSV induces the expression of DNA damage markers and proliferation arrest such as P-TP53, P-ATM, CDKN1A and γH2AFX in cultured cells secondary to the production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS). The DNA damage foci contained γH2AFX and TP53BP1, indicative of double-strand breaks (DSBs) and could be reversed by antioxidant treatments such as N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) or reduced glutathione ethyl ester (GSHee). The damage observed is associated with the accumulation of senescent cells, displaying a canonical senescent phenotype in both mononuclear cells and syncytia. In addition, we show signs of DNA damage and aging such as γH2AFX and CDKN2A expression in the respiratory epithelia of infected mice long after viral clearance. Altogether, these results show that HRSV triggers a DNA damage-mediated cellular senescence program probably mediated by oxidative stress. The results also suggest that this program might contribute to the physiopathology of the infection, tissue remodeling and aging, and might be associated to long-term consequences of HRSV infections. This work was supported by Grants MPY-1038/14 to Alberto Zambrano, PI 11/00590 to Isidoro Martínez and RD12/0036/0030 to Ana Aranda from FIS (Instituto de Salud Carlos III) and Grant BFU2011-28958, from Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad to Ana Aranda. AI is one of the biggest megatrends towards the 4th industrial revolution. Although these technologies promise business sustainability as well as product and process quality, it seems that the ever-changing market demands, the complexity of technologies and fair concerns about privacy, impede broad application and reuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) models across the industry. To break the entry barriers for these technologies and unleash its full potential, the knowlEdge project will develop a new generation of AI methods, systems, and data management infrastructure. Subsequently, as part of the knowlEdge project we propose several major innovations in the areas of data management, data analytics and knowledge management including (i) a set of AI services that allows the usage of edge deployments as computational and live data infrastructure as well as a continuous learning execution pipeline on the edge, (ii) a digital twin of the shop-floor able to test AI models, (iii) a data management framework deployed along the edge-to-cloud continuum ensuring data quality, privacy and confidentiality, (iv) Human-AI Collaboration and Domain Knowledge Fusion tools for domain experts to inject their experience into the system, (v) a set of standardisation mechanisms for the exchange of trained AI models from one context to another, and (vi) a knowledge marketplace platform to distribute and interchange trained AI models. In this paper, we present a short overview of the EU Project knowlEdge –Towards Artificial Intelligence powered manufacturing services, processes, and products in an edge-to-cloud-knowledge continuum for humans [in-the-loop], which is funded by the Horizon 2020 (H2020) Framework Programme of the European Commission under Grant Agreement 957331. Our overview includes a description of the project’s main concept and methodology as well as the envisioned innovations. The research leading to these results has received funding from the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission under Grant Agreement No. 957331 for EU Project knowlEdge –Towards Artificial Intelligence powered manufacturing services, processes, and products in an edge-to-cloud-knowledge continuum for humans [in-the-loop].Peer ReviewedTreball signat per 21 autors/autores: Sergio Alvarez-Napagao, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Spain; Boki Ashmore, ICE, United Kingdom; Marta Barroso, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Spain; Cristian Barrué, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Spain; Christian Beecks, University of Münster, Germany; Fabian Berns, University of Münster, Germany; Ilaria Bosi, LINKS Foundation, Italy; Sisay Adugna Chala, Fraunhofer FIT, Germany; Nicola Ciulli, Nextworks, Italy; Marta Garcia-Gasulla, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Spain; Alexander Grass, Fraunhofer FIT, Germany; Dimosthenis Ioannidis, CERTH/ITI, Greece; Natalia Jakubiak, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spain; Karl Köpke, Kautex Textron, Germany; Ville Lämsä, VTT Technical Research Centre, Finland; Pedro Megias, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Spain; Alexandros Nizamis, CERTH/ITI, Greece; Claudio Pastrone, LINKS Foundation, Italy; Rosaria Rossini, LINKS Foundation, Italy; Miquel Sànchez-Marrè, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spain; Luca Ziliotti, Parmalat, ItalyPostprint (author's final draft

Vasoactive intestinal peptide gene polymorphisms, associated with its serum levels, predict treatment requirements in early rheumatoid arthritis

We previously reported that early arthritis (EA) patients with low vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) serum levels demonstrate a worse clinical disease course. In this study, we analysed whether variants in the VIP gene correlated with its serum levels and clinical EA parameters. The VIP gene was sequenced in patients with extremely high/low VIP levels, measured by enzyme immunoassay. Sixteen single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were diferentially distributed between both groups, which were subsequently genotyped in two patients’ sets. We observed that patients with rs688136 CC genotype showed higher VIP levels in both discovery (n=91; p=0.033) and validation populations (n=131; p=0.007). This efect was attenuated by the presence of minor alleles rs35643203 and rs12201140, which showed a clear trend towards low VIP level association (p=0.118 and p=0.049, respectively). Functional studies with miR-205-5p, which has a target site in the 3′ UTR close to rs688136, revealed a miRNA-mediated regulatory mechanism explaining the higher VIP gene expression in homozygous patients. Moreover, patients with an rs688136 CC genotype and no minor alleles of the other polymorphisms required less treatment (p=0.009). We concluded that the identifcation of polymorphisms associated with VIP serum levels would complement the clinical assessment of the disease severity in rheumatoid arthritis patients
