Effect of Iron Nanopowder on Flammability of Epoxy Composites
Reducing the flammability of polymeric materials is a serious problem that needs to be solved. The paper presents the results of a study of the effect of iron nanopowders, used as filler, on the flammability of epoxy polymers. Epoxy composites filled with 5 wt. % of iron nanopowder and 10 wt. % of boric acid separately, as well as in combination were prepared. The flammability of the prepared samples was evaluated by determining the ignition temperature and time-to-ignition

Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy to Characterize Different Fractions of Extracellular Vesicles from Control and Prostate Cancer Patients
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane-enclosed structures ranging in size from about 60 to 800 nm that are released by the cells into the extracellular space; they have attracted interest as easily available biomarkers for cancer diagnostics. In this study, EVs from plasma of control and prostate cancer patients were fractionated by differential centrifugation at 5000× g, 12,000× g and 120,000× g. The remaining supernatants were purified by ultrafiltration to produce EV-depleted free-circulating (fc) fractions. Spontaneous Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) at 785 nm excitation using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were employed as label-free techniques to collect fingerprint spectra and identify the fractions that best discriminate between control and cancer patients. SERS spectra from 10 µL droplets showed an enhanced Raman signature of EV-enriched fractions that were much more intense for cancer patients than controls. The Raman spectra of dehydrated pellets of EV-enriched fractions without AgNPs were dominated by spectral contributions of proteins and showed variations in S-S stretch, tryptophan and protein secondary structure bands between control and cancer fractions. We conclude that the AgNPs-mediated SERS effect strongly enhances Raman bands in EV-enriched fractions, and the fractions, EV12 and EV120 provide the best separation of cancer and control patients by Raman and SERS spectra
Approaches the definition and parameters of the model cavitation technology environment. Found that the technological environment, subdued cavitation processing, is a visco-elastic-plastic body and can be described by the model Binhama-Shvedova. Implemented is the idea to review the contact zone of interaction of the system "cavitation device – technological environment" by determining the balance of power system pressure and stress, surrounded by bubbles emerging in consideration of the fluid model as a system with distributed parameters. As the research is subject to various technological environments the cavitation is shown as viscous and plastic properties, considered taking into account the energy dissipation in cavitating environments, including the contact area on the laws change frequency independent and frequency dependent damping. This approach made it possible to reveal the physical nature of the interaction, receive analytical dependences to establish the basic parameters, including contact pressure and impedance in the contact area «cavitation machine systems – technological environment». Research results select the input impedance compensator length λ/4 for maximum transfer conditions under which the impedance compensator system and coordination. When placing the device between the border and the environment auxiliary layer of material with the acoustic impedance ensured equality acoustic impedance device and transmission line equivalent. Then, a reflection of both boundary layer additionally installed waves are equal in amplitude, thus ensuring maximum transfer of energy to the flow of the process.
LiCl induces TNF-α and FasL production, thereby stimulating apoptosis in cancer cells
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The incidence of cancer in patients with neurological diseases, who have been treated with LiCl, is below average. LiCl is a well-established inhibitor of Glycogen synthase kinase-3, a kinase that controls several cellular processes, among which is the degradation of the tumour suppressor protein p53. We therefore wondered whether LiCl induces p53-dependent cell death in cancer cell lines and experimental tumours.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here we show that LiCl induces apoptosis of tumour cells both <it>in vitro </it>and <it>in vivo</it>. Cell death was accompanied by cleavage of PARP and Caspases-3, -8 and -10. LiCl-induced cell death was not dependent on p53, but was augmented by its presence. Treatment of tumour cells with LiCl strongly increased TNF-α and FasL expression. Inhibition of TNF-α induction using siRNA or inhibition of FasL binding to its receptor by the Nok-1 antibody potently reduced LiCl-dependent cleavage of Caspase-3 and increased cell survival. Treatment of xenografted rats with LiCl strongly reduced tumour growth.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Induction of cell death by LiCl supports the notion that GSK-3 may represent a promising target for cancer therapy. LiCl-induced cell death is largely independent of p53 and mediated by the release of TNF-α and FasL.</p> <p>Key words: LiCl, TNF-α, FasL, apoptosis, GSK-3, FasL</p

Neuropsychological Disorders Indicative of Postresuscitation Encephalopaty in Rats
The aim of this research was to study the effect of 12-minute clinical death on innate and acquired behavior, biogenic amine concentration, and the composition and quantity of neural populations in specific brain regions of white rats. The study shows that in animals during the postresuscitation period with formal restoration of neurological status, there are changes in emotional reactivity, orientation-exploration reactions, impairment of learning and memory, decrease in exercise tolerance and pain sensitivity. These processes are accompanied by alterations in serotonin and norepinephrine levels in the frontal cerebral cortex, dopamine and serotonin levels in the striatum, certain biochemical indices in blood plasma and neural loss in the CA1 sector of the hippocampus and lateral portions of the cerebellum
Comparative study of the effect of flame retardants on the ignition temperature of epoxy composites
The disadvantage of polymeric materials, including epoxy resins, is their increased fire hazard. Reducing the flammability of polymeric materials is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. One of the ways to reduce the flammability of polymers is the introduction of special additives into the polymer matrix with flame retarding properties, which leads to a change in the nature of the processes occurring during the combustion of the polymer, or to blocking the combustion process with non-combustible or inhibiting substances. In this work, aluminum trihydroxide, melamine polyphosphate, and melamine poly(magnesium phosphate) were used as flame retardants to enhance the flame-resistant properties of epoxy resin. The filler loading in the epoxy composites was 10 wt. %. The experimental studies have been carried out to determine the ignition temperature of the produced epoxy composites. The data obtained were compared with the ignition temperature of a control sample of epoxy resin without filler. The results indicated that the incorporation of all the flame retardants studied resulted in an increase in the ignition temperature. The ignition temperature of the samples filled with melamine polyphosphate and melamine poly(magnesium phosphate) increased by 28 and 11 °C, respectively. However, the best result was obtained for a sample filled with aluminum trihydroxide: the ignition temperature of this sample was 40 °C higher than that of the unfilled epoxy resin
