    Occurrence and length weight relationship of Indo-Pacific mugilid Chelon carinatus (Valenciennes 1836) in four river estuaries of Turkey

    236-240Occurence and length-weight (LWR) relationships of four populations of Chelon carinatus in brackishwater systems of Mediterranean coast of Turkey were reported. A non-indigenous fish species, C. carinatus were captured between November 2014 and June 2017 in Ceyhan, Seyhan, Göksu and Manavgat river estuaries. A total of 127 individuals, ranging in size between 11.8 and 20.8 cm total length, 19.0 and 113.6 g weight, were examined. The length–weight relationship for all individuals was described by the following parameters: a = 0.0076; b = 3.1708 and r2 = 0.93. The results of the current length-weight relationship study show that there is significant difference from the isometric b (3.0) value for all these populations. The length-weight relationships from all localities were reported here for the first time

    553-558Aphanius fasciatus (Valenciennes, 1821), is a cyprinodontid euryhaline fish occur in many brackish water habitats along the Mediterranean coasts. The current study aims to update the range of A. fasciatus (Mediterranean Killifish, South European Toothcarp) along river estuaries and lagoon systems of Mediterranean coast of Turkey, and to determine its length–weight relationship.     Parasite infection in Serranus cabrilla (Perciformes, Serranidae): histopathological aspects and new host record for nematode genus Philometra from Aegean Sea, Turkey

    ΔΕΝ ΔΙΑΤΙΘΕΤΑΙ ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗThis study was conducted to determine infection with nematode parasite Philometra sp. in gonads of Serranus cabrilla recorded in Izmir Gulf between October 2016 and July 2017. The overall prevalence was 14.46% and the mean intensity of infection 1.2 parasites per fish. The occurrence of philometrid infection on comber hosts was assessed according to several risk factors (fish length class, sex and season). Our findings suggest that the highest rates of parasite infection occur in larger sized fish, hermaphrodite individuals and during April month. The present report also revealed that marked hyperemia was the major findings of infected gonads of S. cabrilla, where parasitic nematodes caused a marked inflammatory reaction at the histopathological examination. As far as we know, this paper represents the first mention of genus Philometra in S. cabrilla from Turkey and the first presence of philometrid parasites in Aegean coast of Turkey. Furthermore, the present work is the first record of the effects of Philometra sp. parasitism on a serranid species in Izmir Gulf

    Length-weight relationships of Atherina boyeri Risso, 1810 and A. hepsetus Linnaeus, 1758 (Teleostei: Atherinidae) from some inland, brackish water and marine systems of Turkey

    1099-1104Members of Genus Atherina inhabit inshore marine environments as well as brackish and freshwater habitats. Growth properties of Atherina species remain poorly understood, despite their wide distribution. This study aims to present the length–weight relationships of Mediterranean sand smelt, Atherina hepsetus Linnaeus, 1758 and Big-scale sand smelt, Atherina boyeri from some inland, brackish water and marine systems of Turkey. During the study conducted from November 2014 to June 2017, a total number of 1183 fish specimens ranging from 2.5-15.4 cm in total length and 0.06-23.9 g in weight were analyzed. The slope value (b) of the length weight relationships obtained for A. boyeri and A. hepsetus were between 2.563-3.412 with an average value of 3.26 and between 2.523-3.118 with an average value of 2.81, respectively. While eight populations of A. boyeri showed negative allometric growth pattern, seven of them exhibited positive allometric growth pattern. The only one population of A. hepsetus showed positive allometric growth pattern, whereas its three populations had negative allometric growth pattern. This study also provides new maximum length recorded for A. hepsetus

    Occurrence of black spot disease induced by Posthodiplostomum cuticola (Nordmann, 1832) (Digenea: Diplostomatidae) in endemic and native fish of Turkey: seven new host records

    ΔΕΝ ΔΙΑΤΙΘΕΤΑΙ ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗThis study was conducted to determine parasite infection with Posthodiplostomum cuticola in eight fish species collected from five Rivers Basins of Turkey (Aras, Çoruh, Sakarya, Marmara and Susurluk River Basins). Five of eight fish species are endemic to Turkey. The highest values of prevalence and mean intensity (60.87%; 4.86) of cysts with metacercaria of P. cuticola were recorded in Alburnus filippii, a native fish species in Ağıl Creek. At the gross examination numerous black lesions were observed at the skin of the fishes. Microscopically black-spot disease was revealed by melanin pigmentation and atrophy of fish muscles in lesioned areas. Parasites were covered by thing connective tissue capsule. Alburnus escherichii, Alburnus filippii, Capoeta tinca, Chondrostoma angorense, Chondrostoma colchicum, Squalius pursakensis and Squalius turcicus were found as new host records for P. cuticola
