β-Decay Half-Lives of 110 Neutron-Rich Nuclei across the N = 82 Shell Gap: Implications for the Mechanism and Universality of the Astrophysical r Process

Projectile fragmentation reactions and production of nuclei near the neutron drip-line
The reaction mechanism of projectile fragmentation at intermediate energies
has been investigated observing the target dependence of the production cross
sections of very neutron-rich nuclei. Measurement of longitudinal momentum
distributions of projectile-like fragments within a wide range of fragment mass
and its charge was performed using a hundred-MeV/n Ar beam incident on
Be and Ta targets. By measurement of fragment momentum distribution, a
parabolic mass dependence of momentum peak shift was observed in the results of
both targets, and a phenomenon of light-fragment acceleration was found only in
the Be-target data. The analysis of production cross sections revealed an
obvious enhancement of the target dependence except target size effect when the
neutron excess is increased. This result implies the breakdown of factorization
(BOF) of production cross sections for very neutron-rich nuclei near the drip

Spectroscopy of 32Ne and the Island of Inversion
We report on the first spectroscopic study of the N=22 nucleus 32Ne at the
newly completed RIKEN Radioactive Ion Beam Factory. A single gamma-ray line
with an energy of 722(9) keV was observed in both inelastic scattering of a 226
MeV/u 32Ne beam on a Carbon target and proton removal from 33Na at 245 MeV/u.
This transition is assigned to the de-excitation of the first J^pi = 2+ state
in 32Ne to the 0+ ground state. Interpreted through comparison with
state-of-the-art shell model calculations, the low excitation energy
demonstrates that the Island of Inversion extends to at least N=22 for the Ne

Is the 7/2^<->_<1> isomer state of ^<43>S spherical?
We report on the spectroscopic quadrupole moment measurement of the 7/2−1 isomeric state in S271643 [E∗=320.5(5)  keV, T1/2=415(3)  ns], using the time dependent perturbed angular distribution technique at the RIKEN RIBF facility. Our value, ∣Qs∣=23(3)  efm2, is larger than that expected for a single-particle state. Shell model calculations using the modern SDPF-U interaction for this mass region reproduce remarkably well the measured ∣Qs∣, and show that non-negligible correlations drive the isomeric state away from a purely spherical shape
SHARAQ Project: Progress in 2009
On March 23, 2009, the first beam was successfullytransported to the final focal plane of the SHARAQspectrometer. We investigated detector responses toheavy-ion beams and the ion optical properties ofthe SHARAQ spectrometer1) and the high-resolutionbeam line2) in the subsequent commissioning runs andfound that the system as a whole worked almost as perits design.
