    Selecting Insulating Materials for Building Envelope: A Life Cycle Approach

    This paper aims at assessing the embodied energy and greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) of two building envelopes, designed for a two floors semi-detached house located in the Central Italy. The analysis is performed by applying the Life Cycle Assessment methodology, following a from cradle-to-gate approach. Fixtures (windows and doors), external and internal opaque walls, roof and floors (including interstorey floors) make the building envelopes. Their stratigraphy allows for achieving the thermal transmittance values established in the Italian Decree on energy performance of buildings. The two examined envelopes differ only for the insulation material: extruded expanded polystyrene (XPS) or cellulose fibers. The results shows that the envelope using cellulose fibers has better performance than that using XPS: it allows for reducing the embodied energy and the GHGs of about 13% and 9.3%, respectively. A dominance analysis allows to identify the envelope components responsible of the higher impacts and the contribution of the insulating material to the impacts.     Synthesis of sericin-based conjugates by click chemistry: enhancement of sunitinib bioavailability and cell membrane permeation

    Sericin is a natural protein that has been used in biomedical and pharmaceutical fields as raw material for polypeptide-based drug delivery systems (DDSs). In this paper, it has been employed as pharmaceutical biopolymer for the production of sunitinib–polypeptide conjugate. The synthesis has been carried out by simple click reaction in water, using the redox couple l-ascorbic acid/hydrogen peroxide as a free radical grafting initiator. The bioconjugate molecular weight (50 kDa < Mw < 75 kDa) was obtained by SDS-PAGE, while the spectroscopic characteristics have been studied in order to reveal the presence of grafted sunitinib. In both FT-IR and UV/Vis spectra, signals corresponding to sunitinib functional groups have been identified. Since sunitinib is an anticancer drug characterized by low bioavailability and low permeability, the bioconjugation aimed at their enhancement. In vitro studies demonstrated that bioavailability has been increased to almost 74%, compared with commercial formulation. Also cell membrane permeability has been augmented in in vitro tests, in which membrane models have been used to determine the lipid membrane/physiological fluid partition coefficient (Kp). The log(Kp) value of the bioconjugate was increased to over 4. This effect resulted in a three-fold decrease of IC50 value against MCF-7 cells

    Single-step Au-catalysed synthesis and microstructural characterization of core-shell Ge/In-Te nanowires by MOCVD

    We report on the self-assembly of core-shell Ge/In-Te nanowires (NWs) on single crystal Si substrates by Metalorganic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD), coupled to the Vapour-Liquid-Solid (VLS) mechanism, catalysed by Au nanoparticles (NPs). The NWs are formed by a crystalline Ge core and an InTe (II) shell, have diameters down to 15&thinsp;nm and show &lt;110&gt; oriented growth direction. The role of the MOCVD process parameters and of the NPs size in determining the NWs core-shell microstructure and their alignment was investigated by high-resolution TEM, EDX, XRD and Raman spectroscopy

    Performance Evaluation of an Immersive Virtual Reality Application for Rehabilitation after Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair

    Few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of shoulder rehabilitation in virtual environments. The objective of this study was to investigate the performance of a custom virtual reality application (VR app) with a stereophotogrammetric system considered the gold standard. A custom VR app was designed considering the recommended rehabilitation exercises following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Following the setting of the play space, the user’s arm length, and height, five healthy volunteers performed four levels of rehabilitative exercises. Results for the first and second rounds of flexion and abduction displayed low total mean absolute error values and low numbers of unmet conditions. In internal and external rotation, the number of times conditions were not met was slightly higher; this was attributed to a lack of isolated shoulder movement. Data is promising, and volunteers were able to reach goal conditions more often than not. Despite positive results, more literature comparing VR applications with gold-standard clinical parameters is necessary. Nevertheless, results contribute to a body of literature that continues to encourage the application of VR to shoulder rehabilitation programs

    Perhexiline maleate enhances antitumor efficacy of cisplatin in neuroblastoma by inducing over-expression of NDM29 ncRNA

    High Risk Neuroblastoma (HR-NB) is a pediatric cancer characterized by high malignancy and remarkable cell heterogeneity within the tumour nodules. In a recent study, we demonstrated that in vitro and in vivo over-expression of the non-coding RNA NDM29 (neuroblastoma differentiation marker 29) induces NB cell differentiation, dramatically reducing their malignancy. Among gene expression changes, differentiated phenotype induced by NDM29 is characterized by decrease of the expression of ABC transporters responsible for anticancer drug resistance. Thus, the pharmacological induction of NDM29, in principle, might represent a possible novel strategy to increase cytotoxic drug responses. In this work, we identify a small molecule able to induce the expression of NDM29 in NB cells, conferring to malignant cells increased susceptibility to cisplatin cytotoxic effects. We demonstrate that the pharmacological induction of NDM29 expression in vivo enhances the antitumoral effects of chemotherapy specifically on tumour initiating/cancer stem cells sub-population, usually refractory to therapies and responsible for tumour relapse. In summary, we suggest a novel therapeutical approach possibly useful to treat very aggressive NB cases with poor prognosis. This novel pharmacological strategy aims to promote differentiation of "stem-like" cells to render them more susceptible to the killing action of cytotoxic anticancer drugs

    Territorial survey on the interest in sport in the local territory of "Gian Camillo Glorioso" school

    The latest survey by the Central Statistical Institute (ISTAT) in 2015 reports in Italy an increase in the number of sports practitioners compared to 2011. They are greater in girls and more distributed on the 4 age groups chosen as a representative sample. The chosen disciplines vary according to age classes and the previous survey, indicating a significant increase in dance for females and fitness for males. This study doesn’t focus on any reasons for the choices, on the related to the study or work activities and the data don’t emerge locally. The aim of the study is to investigate a limited area, an homogeneous sample based on high school students and to investigate possible motivations including the relationship with the study. Data show that more females (63%) than males (37%) replied to the questionnaire and that a third of the students study 3 hours a day. 60% of students practices sport and the most practiced ones are fitness (38%), dance (19%) and football (16%). The lack of time due to the study prevents physical activity for a third of the students, followed by a lack of motivation (30%) and facilities in the area (13%). In conclusion, results suggest that the study circumscribed locally, with a representative sample of the reference population is more reliable and can be used as a basis for any actions to be taken
