    Modeling of Free Surface Flows with Elastic Bodies Interactions

    In this paper, a series of new fluid and structure interactions test cases with strong free surface effects are presented and computations of such flows with the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) (Idelsohn, Oiiate, Del Pin and Calvo, 2006) are documented. The structures object of study are elastic cantilever bars clamped inside sloshing tanks subjected ro roll motion. The possibilities of PFEM for the coupled simulation of moderately violent free surface flows interacting with elastic bodies are investigated. The problem can be described as the coupling of a sloshing flow with an easily deformable elastic body. A series of experiments designed and executed specifically for these tests are also described. The experiments comprise cases with different liquid height and liquids of different viscosity. The aim is to identify canonical benchmark problems in FSI (Fluid and Structure Interactions), including free surfaces, for future comparisons between different numerical approaches

    Innovative concepts of Integrated Solar Combined Cycles (ISCC) using a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC)

    Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) is one of the most promising ways for electricity production of the upcoming years with high penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar-photovoltaics. This is due to the fact that CSP when coupled to Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system enables large, inexpensive and flexible energy dispatch, which contributes to energy grid stabilization. At the same time, TES allows for steady operation of the power block by reducing undesirable fluctuations due to weather transient conditions and increasing the number of hours that the power block operates at design conditions 1. Despite the abovementioned advantages of CSP systems, a step further is needed for increase overall system efficiency and decrease CO2 emissions. Several studies have been performed considering high efficiency plant layouts such as combined cycle. For the latter, several works have been investigated about solar integration of combined cycle using parabolic trough and solar tower technologies. In both cases, solar energy was used for water/steam preheating and evaporation steps of the Rankine cycle in combination with the exhaust gases of fossil-fuel gas turbine engine. However, no research has been performed considering ISCC coupled with a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC). In this research, two innovative layouts of ISCC power plants will be analyzed. First considers a ISCC based on solar tower and second a ISCC with a parabolic trough collector field coupled to the Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG). The objective of this research is analyze the energy behavior of both layouts, selecting the best ISCC scheme to be coupled with a SOFC. The simulations will be performed using Thermoflex software. In both layouts, a SOFC is introduced before the combustion chamber at the topping cycle, and a Rankine cycle (bottoming cycle) with 2 pressures is considered.Universidad de Málaga.     Role of early experience in the development of preference for low-quality food in sheep

    Domestic ruminant selectivity induces floristic changes in pasturelands, risking sustainability and limiting the subsequent availability of susceptible plant species. Development of preferences for species of lower nutritional quality may help to overcome those problems. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that early experience of sheep with a low-quality food (LQF) in a nutritional enriched context increases preference for LQF in adulthood. We predicted a higher proportional consumption of LQF in experienced lambs (EL) than in inexperienced lambs (IL) in choice situations involving LQF and alternative foods. Additionally, we determined intake of LQF by EL and IL at different levels of high-quality food (HQF) availability. From 60 to 210 days of age, EL were fed in separated feed bunks mature oat hay (LQF) simultaneously with sunflower meal (SM) and corn grain (CG), whereas IL were fed alfalfa hay (HQF) simultaneously with SM and CG. After exposure, EL and IL were offered LQF in free choice situations involving alternative foods, and also at five levels of HQF availability (100%, 75%, 50%, 25% and 0% of ad libitum intake). Proportional consumption of LQF was lower or similar in EL than IL. Intake of LQF was also lower or similar in EL than IL at all levels of HQF availability, except when the LQF was the only food available. Our results did not support the hypothesis that early experience with a LQF in a nutritional enriched context increases preference for LQF in adulthood. On the contrary, experience with LQF diminished subsequent preference for LQF in adulthood. It is proposed that, in the conditions of our study, continuous comparison between the LQF and the high-quality supplements (CG and SM) during the early exposure period lead to devaluation of LQF by EL through a simultaneous negative contrast effect.Fil: Catanese, Francisco Hernan.     Electrochemical Oxidation of Small Organic Molecules on Au Nanoparticles with Preferential Surface Orientation

    The surface orientation effect on the oxidation of small organic molecules such as methanol, formaldehyde, ethanol, and glycerol has been studied on Au nanoparticles in alkaline medium. Two sets of Au nanoparticles enriched in (100) and (111) facets were synthetized by using colloidal methods in presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The nanoparticles were physically characterized by using TEM and XRD and electrochemically characterized by using Pb underpotential deposition as a surface-structure probe. It is reported that, although methanol oxidation was similar in both types of nanoparticles, the oxidation of formaldehyde presented a clear surface orientation effect. For this reaction, nanoparticles with (111) preferential orientation presented higher current densities at low potentials, whereas Au(100) nanoparticles exhibited higher activity at potentials more positive than 1.0 V versus RHE. On the other hand, for glycerol and ethanol oxidations, the onset of the reaction was similar in both types of particles, although Au(111) nanoparticles showed higher current densities than the Au(100) ones.P.R. acknowledges financial support from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) through a VENI grant and the University of Birmingham through a Birmingham Fellowship

    Chirping compact stars: gravitational radiation and detection degeneracy with binary systems A conceptual pathfinder for space-based gravitational-wave observatories

    Compressible, Riemann S-type ellipsoids can emit gravitational waves (GWs) with a chirp-like behavior (hereafter chirping ellipsoids, CELs). We show that the GW frequency-amplitude evolution of CELs (mass 1\sim 1~M_\odot, radius 103\sim10^3~km, polytropic equation of state with index n3n\approx 3) is indistinguishable from that emitted by double white dwarfs (DWDs) and by extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) composed of an intermediate-mass (e.g.~103 M10^3~M_\odot) black hole and a planet-like (e.g.~104 M10^{-4}~M_\odot) companion, in a specific frequency interval within the detector sensitivity band in which the GWs of all these systems are quasi-monochromatic. We estimate that for reasonable astrophysical assumptions, the rates in the local Universe of CELs, DWDs and EMRIs in the mass range considered here, are very similar, posing a detection-degeneracy challenge for space-based GW detectors. The astrophysical implications of this CEL-binary detection degeneracy by space-based GW-detection facilities, are outlined.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Nitrate-induced early transcriptional changes during imbibition in non-after-ripened Sisymbrium officinale seeds.

    We have here demonstrated for the first time that nitrate not only accelerates testa rupture of non- AR seeds but also modifies expression pattern of the cell-wall remodeling proteins (mannanases; SoMAN6 and SoMAN7) and key genes belonging to metabolism and signaling of ABA (SoNCED6, SoNCED9, SoCYP707A2 and SoABI5) and GAs (SoGA3ox, SoGA20ox, SoGA2ox and SoRGL2). These results were obtained during Sisymbrium officinale seed imbibition in the absence of endosperm rupture. Exogenous ABA induced a notable inhibition of testa rupture in both absence and presence of nitrate being this effect sharply reversed by GA4+7. However, nitrate was capable to provoke testa rupture in absence of ABA synthesis. The expression of SoMAN6 and SoMAN7 were positively altered by nitrate. Although ABA synthesis seems apparent at the start of non-AR seed imbibition, taken together the results of SoNCED6, SoNCED9 and SoCYP707A2 expression seem to suggest that nitrate leads to a strong net ABA decrease. Likewise, nitrate positively affected the SoABI5 expression when the SoNCED9 expression was also stimulated. By contrast, at the early and final of imbibition, nitrate clearly inhibited the SoABI5 expression. The expression of SoGA2ox6 and SoGA3ox2 are strongly inhibited by nitrate whereas of SoGA20ox6 was stimulated. On the other hand, SoRGL2 transcript level decreased in the presence of nitrate. Taken together, the results presented here suggest that the nitrate signaling is already operative during the non-AR S. officinale seeds imbibition. The nitrate, in cross-talk with the AR network likely increases the favorable molecular conditions that trigger germination

    Características de la canal de terneros de la Denominación de Origen Protegida Mirandesa

    El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar las características de la canal de la raza Mirandesa. Para llevar a cabo este estudio, un total de 20 animales de la raza Mirandesa fueron sacrificados a los 315 días. 24 horas tras el sacrificio, se determinó el peso canal y rendimiento canal, se realizaron las medidas morfométricas (longitud de la canal, longitud de la pierna, espesor de la pierna, profundidad interna del pecho y perímetro máximo de la pierna), se calcularon los siguientes índices: índice de compacidad de la canal e índice longitudinal transversal de la pierna y se realizó el despiece de los principales cortes comerciales. Los animales de la raza Mirandesa presentaron un peso vivo de 293,7 kg, un peso canal de 152 kg y un rendimiento canal de 60,5 %. En relación a las medidas morfométricas, la raza Mirandesa mostró una longitud de canal de 110 cm, una longitud de pierna de 69 cm y un perímetro de pierna de 89,8 cm. Los valores para el índice de compacidad de la canal y el índice longitudinal transversal de la pierna fueron de 1,4 y 3,7, respectivamente. Con respecto al quinto cuarto, la piel presentó los mayores porcentajes seguida de la cabeza y pies. Finalmente, la composición de las canales de la raza Mirandesa fue: 74,9 % de carne, 18,1 % de hueso y 7,0 % de grasa.The aim of this study was to evaluate the carcass characteristics of Mirandesa breed. To carry out this study, a total of 20 animals of Mirandesa breed were slaughter at 315 days. After 24 hours of slaughter, carcass weight and dressing percentage were determined, and morphometric measurements (carcass length, leg length, leg width, leg perimeter, chest external depth, chest internal depth and leg maximum perimeter) were performed and the following indexes were calculated: carcass compactness index and hindlimb compactness index and the main commercial cuts were obtained. Animals from Mirandesa breed presented a 293.7 kg live weight, a 152 kg carcass weight and a dressing percentage of 60.5 %. Regarding morphometric measurements, animals from Mirandesa breed showed a carcass length of 110 cm, leg length of 69 cm and leg perimeter of 89.8 cm. The values for the carcass compactness index and hindlimb compactness index were 1.4 and 3.7, respectively. Respecting fifth quarter, skin showed the highest percentages following by head and feet.     Fossil group origins V. The dependence of the luminosity function on the magnitude gap

    In nature we observe galaxy aggregations that span a wide range of magnitude gaps between the two first-ranked galaxies of a system (Δm12\Delta m_{12}). There are systems with gaps close to zero (e.g., the Coma cluster), and at the other extreme of the distribution, the largest gaps are found among the so-called fossil systems. Fossil and non-fossil systems could have different galaxy populations that should be reflected in their luminosity functions. In this work we study, for the first time, the dependence of the luminosity function parameters on Δm12\Delta m_{12} using data obtained by the fossil group origins (FOGO) project. We constructed a hybrid luminosity function for 102 groups and clusters at z0.25z \le 0.25. We stacked all the individual luminosity functions, dividing them into bins of Δm12\Delta m_{12}, and studied their best-fit Schechter parameters. We additionally computed a relative luminosity function, expressed as a function of the central galaxy luminosity, which boosts our capacity to detect differences, especially at the bright end. We find trends as a function of Δm12\Delta m_{12} at both the bright and faint ends of the luminosity function. In particular, at the bright end, the larger the magnitude gap, the fainter the characteristic magnitude MM^\ast. We also find differences at the faint end. In this region, the larger the gap, the flatter the faint-end slope α\alpha. The differences found at the bright end support a dissipationless, dynamical friction-driven merging model for the growth of the central galaxy in group- and cluster-sized halos. The differences in the faint end cannot be explained by this mechanism. Other processes, such as enhanced tidal disruption due to early infall and/or prevalence of eccentric orbits, may play a role. However, a larger sample of systems with Δm12>1.5\Delta m_{12} > 1.5 is needed to establish the differences at the faint end.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    The nitrate-afterripening crosstalk is involved in the testa rupture of sisymbryum offinales seed

    The loss of seed dormancy can occur by exposing the seed at low moisture storage conditions (afterripening; AR). Since a positive GA:ABA ratio play a key role in the reactivation of germination of non-dormant seeds, it seems obvious that a remarkable effect of AR is the decreasing of both ABA levels and sensitivity, as well as the increment of GA synthesis and sensitivity. ABA levels are regulated by control both of its biosynthesis thorough the 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED) encoding genes and its catabolism mediated mainly by ABA-8¿-hydroxylases (CYP707A). On the other hand, the last steps of the GA biosynthesis pathway should be involved to control its levels. Namely, GA20ox and GA3ox catalyzing the biosynthesis of active GA and GA2ox which catalyzes the GA inactivation. The presence of nitrate accelerates the sensu stricto germination of non-AR S. officinale seeds. Here, we demonstrate that in AR seeds nitrate also alters the expression pattern of key genes involved in ABA and GA metabolism and signalling (i.e. SoNCED6, SoNCED9, SoCYP707A2, SoABI5, SoGA3ox2, SoGA20ox6, SoGA2ox6 and SoRGL2). These results suggest that the nitrate signalling is also operative during imbibition of AR S. officinale seeds
