    Effect of Cattle-Specific Diseases on Carcass Inspection and Meat Quality

    There are severe cattle-specific viral (foot and mouth, vesicular stomatitis, rinderpest, rift valley fever, malignant catarrhal fever, lumpy skin, rabies, bovine leukosis, bovine viral diarrhea, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy), bacterial (tuberculosis, black quarter, botulism, malignant oedema, leptospirosis, brucellosis, anthrax, hemogenic septicemia, actinomycosis, actinobacillosis, mastitis, and metritis), parasitic (lungworm, fasciolosis, cysticercosis, hydatid disease, and onchocercosis), and protozoal (trypanosomiasis, theileriosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and sarcosporidiosis) diseases that affect the carcass judgment and meat quality. These diseases adversely affect cattle health, welfare, and red meat production. This chapter aims to describe the etiology, mode of transmission, ante-mortem and post-mortem findings, carcass and meat quality judgment, and differential diagnosis of these diseases

    The global burden of cancer attributable to risk factors, 2010-19 : a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

    Background Understanding the magnitude of cancer burden attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors is crucial for development of effective prevention and mitigation strategies. We analysed results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 to inform cancer control planning efforts globally. Methods The GBD 2019 comparative risk assessment framework was used to estimate cancer burden attributable to behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risk factors. A total of 82 risk-outcome pairs were included on the basis of the World Cancer Research Fund criteria. Estimated cancer deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) in 2019 and change in these measures between 2010 and 2019 are presented. Findings Globally, in 2019, the risk factors included in this analysis accounted for 4.45 million (95% uncertainty interval 4.01-4.94) deaths and 105 million (95.0-116) DALYs for both sexes combined, representing 44.4% (41.3-48.4) of all cancer deaths and 42.0% (39.1-45.6) of all DALYs. There were 2.88 million (2.60-3.18) risk-attributable cancer deaths in males (50.6% [47.8-54.1] of all male cancer deaths) and 1.58 million (1.36-1.84) risk-attributable cancer deaths in females (36.3% [32.5-41.3] of all female cancer deaths). The leading risk factors at the most detailed level globally for risk-attributable cancer deaths and DALYs in 2019 for both sexes combined were smoking, followed by alcohol use and high BMI. Risk-attributable cancer burden varied by world region and Socio-demographic Index (SDI), with smoking, unsafe sex, and alcohol use being the three leading risk factors for risk-attributable cancer DALYs in low SDI locations in 2019, whereas DALYs in high SDI locations mirrored the top three global risk factor rankings. From 2010 to 2019, global risk-attributable cancer deaths increased by 20.4% (12.6-28.4) and DALYs by 16.8% (8.8-25.0), with the greatest percentage increase in metabolic risks (34.7% [27.9-42.8] and 33.3% [25.8-42.0]). Interpretation The leading risk factors contributing to global cancer burden in 2019 were behavioural, whereas metabolic risk factors saw the largest increases between 2010 and 2019. Reducing exposure to these modifiable risk factors would decrease cancer mortality and DALY rates worldwide, and policies should be tailored appropriately to local cancer risk factor burden.     In this study, we investigated the antioxidant properties of dry-cured beef crude peptide (BPH) at different storage periods. The combination characteristics of different concentrations of Phe-Asp-Gly-Asp-Phe (FDGDF) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) at different temperatures were analyzed by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and FT-IR spectroscopy, combined with the detection of a SOD activity detection box. It was found that FDGDF could improve the activity of SOD by changing its secondary structure. Bonds were formed at O32/O40/O52 using quantum chemical simulation calculations, and the Fukui index was higher than that of most atoms, indicating that these atoms were more likely to participate in the reaction. SPR biological force analysis showed that FDGDF and SOD were in a fast binding and dissociation mode. This study revealed the theoretical basis for studying the antioxidant mechanism of dry-cured beef and provided ideas for developing new dry-cured beef products

    Comparison of Peribulbar Vs Topical Anaesthesia for Phacoemulsification

    Background: To compare the efficacy of topicalanaesthesia with peribulbar anaesthesia inphacoemulsification.Method: This comparative analytical study wasconducted in the Department of Ophthalmology, FaujiFoundation Hospital, Rawalpindi, from February 2006 toJanuary 2007. A total of 200 patients who underwentphacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL)implantation were included in this study. Patients wererandomly assigned to peribulbar group (group 1, n=100)who received 4-5 ml of local anaesthetic (equal quantitiesof 2% xylocaine and 0.5% bupivacaine) in peribulbarregion and topical group (group 2, n=100) using 0.5%proparacaine in conjunctival sac every 5 minutes for halfan hour before surgery. Patients refusing informedconsent, having communication problem and nystagmuswere excluded from the study. All surgeries wereperformed by the same surgeon.Results: The difference between two groups regardinganalgesia was found to be statistically insignificant.Periocular group provided significant akinesia.Conclusion: Topical anaesthesia is an effectivealternative to peribulbar anaesthesia forphacoemulsification reducing the risks associated withperibulbar injection

    Polystyrene-Sepiolite Clay Nanocomposites with Enhanced Mechanical and Thermal Properties

    Polystyrene (PS)/sepiolite clay nanocomposites were prepared via the melt extrusion technique using vinyl tri-ethoxy silane (VTES) as the compatibilizer and cross-linking agent. Mechanical, thermal, and flame-retardant properties of the newly developed polystyrene-based nanocomposites were determined. Surface morphology was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), examining the distribution of the filler in various compositions of fabricated composites. Structural analysis of the samples was carried out using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Thermal stability was determined by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), showing a maximum 30.2 wt.% increase in residue by adding sepiolite clay. The results obtained from the dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) in terms of the storage modulus, loss modulus and damping factor exhibited better stress transfer rate and effective interfacial adhesion between the filler and the matrix. The higher filler loaded sample showed greater flame retardancy by decreasing the burning rate up to 48%
