    End-Users Housing Requirements in Tumfure Housing Estate in Gombe Metropolis, Nigeria

    One of the critical success indicators of projects is to meet the requirements of end-users on which their satisfaction depend upon. This study aimed to examine end-users housing requirements in a Tumfure housing estate in Gombe metropolis, Nigeria, to improve end-user satisfaction. The study objectives were: To identify end-users housing requirements in Tumfure housing estate in Gombe metropolis. The survey design was used to collect responses from occupants of the estate using a structured questionnaire that produced a 65 % response rate. The collected data was analysed using descriptive statistical tools of tables and means. The research found that end-users basic housing requirements in the Tumfure housing estate were the flow of natural ventilation and illumination, rooms suitable for a family unit, modern convenience, circulation spaces, and adequate security. The research recommended that end-users requirements and their peculiarities be the primary consideration in designing and developing public housing estate to ensure higher end-user residential satisfaction

    Position of the Teaching Profession in Nigeria and Its Effects on Potential Business Teachers in the Country

    The study investigated the stance of teaching profession and its effect on potential business teachers in Nigeria.  The study has six objectives and six null hypotheses.    Descriptive survey design was adopted in the study.  Data were collected from 224 business education student-teachers who did their teaching practice in 2012/2013 academic year in Zaria and Sabon Gari local government in Kaduna state.  Structured questionnaire titled Status of Teaching Profession and Future Teachers in Nigeria (STPFTN) was used to elicit data from the respondents.  Data collected were coded and analyzed through SPSS XII.  Chi-square was used to test all the six null hypotheses at significant level of 0.05.  The result revealed among others that the status f teaching profession has significant effect on the attitudes of potential teachers in Nigeria.  it was recommended among others that government should encourage the atmosphere of positive support for education, providing improved training and professional development, increasing teacher salaries, and installing outstanding facilities, this will help to encourage retained existing teachers and attract future teachers into the profession.     ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AS AN INSTRUMENT FOR IMPROVING THE MONTHLY SANITATION EXERCISE IN KANO METROPOLIS

    The Paper discusses some observable environmental problems resulting from man’s continuous interaction with the environment in kano metropolis. It was found necessary to use environmental education as an instrument to educate the people for better improvement of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the state. The monthly environmental sanitation exercise is carried out in the state at the end of every month in the last Saturday of the month. The exercise usually last for 3 hours starting from 7:00a.m to 10:00am with the hope of cleaning and keeping the environment tidy. Field observation and questionnaire were used to generate data for the study. The simple random sampling technique was used to select samples needed for the study. Tables and percentages were used to analyze the date. The study found that many people in the city usually seat at their homes within the said hours without cleaning or doing anything during the exercise. It was also found that the exercise is not properly monitored or supervised in the metropolis, except in some major roads and high ways leading to the city. The study recommends that environmental education is an important instrument that can be used to improve the monthly sanitation exercise in the metropolis. Social media and GSM text messages can equally be used to disseminate information to the general public on the exercise for effective participation in the city. Civildefense, Kano Road Traffic Agency (karota) and Kano state Hisbah Board (Hisba) personals should be involved in the exercise for more proper participation and effectiveness

    Assessment of Disposal and Management of Solid Waste in Damaturu, Yobe State, Nigeria (A Case Study of YOSEPA)

    This research assesses the solid waste management problems and implication in Damaturu, Yobe State, Nigeria; the data was generated through primary and secondary sources. 50 questionnaires were administered to households, civil servants, and YOSEPA staff. Direct survey and public interview were conducted. The finding of the study revealed the following: 41 (82%) of the respondents were male while only 9(18%) were female, of which 31 (62%) have been living in Damaturu for more than 2 years. The type of soil wastes generated mostly were organic 30(60%) which are biodegradable, and 35(70%) of the solid waste is dispose of in open land by the inhabitants. Most houses contained 1-5 people 33(66%) 34(68%) respondents revealed that YOSEPA is managing their waste to some extent, 11 (22%), 5(10%) by confer and other organizations respectively. With only 2(4%) of respondents sorted their waste before disposal (which is the first step in proper waste management). Most of the respondents dispose their waste on daily basis 37(74%). Based on the interview, wastes in the environment have some implications to human health and aesthetic nature of the environment. Inadequate financing, low workforce and lack of adequate machinery are the major factors hindering the performance of the agency. The results have provided baseline information on one of the major environmental problems of Yobe State, recommendations were forwarded for addressing the solid waste management problems in the study area and the state.     Incidence of Thrips tabaci on Onion (Allium cepa L.) and their Control in Sokoto and Kebbi States, Nigeria

    Primary data were generated on insect pests of onion using structuredquestionnaire on one hundred farmers from Kebbi and Sokoto States. Results obtained indicated that all farmers identify the major insect pest affecting onion as tiny, whitish or brownish insect, present mostly in hot season. Majority of the farmers use insecticides in controlling it whenever the crop shows sign of insect feeding, such as stunting, in addition to silvery sheen. 41.5% of the respondents use Karate, 33.49% Cotalm P168, 18.87% Gammalin, 4.72 % Nuvan and 1.42% Cymbush. However, some combine ash with chemicals, probably to minimize production cost.Key words: Onion, thrips, chemical, control

    The Effect of Board Attributes on Real Earnings Management in Nigerian Financial Institutions

    The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between board attributes and real earnings management of listed Nigerian financial institutions. The residuals from Roychowdhury model (2006) is used to proxy real earnings management. Data were collected from 45 financial institutions quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) from 2011 to 2016. For analysis purpose, the Panel Corrected Standard Errors (PCSEs) regression was utilized. The regression result shows that board meeting and board expertise have a significant positive impact on real earnings management. Whereas, female directors has a significant negative influence on real earnings management. The study recommends that the authorities concerned in Nigeria should concentrate on the recent technique of real earnings management (cash flow from operation, discretionary expenses and cost of goods sold) known to board members in developed economies in order to play a pivotal role in constraining corporate managers to act opportunistically in the ordinary course of business activities and preparing financial reports

    Influence of Entry Grades in Mathematics and Principles of Accounting on Students Performance in Financial Accounting in Nasarawa State Colleges of Education Akwanga, Nigeria

    This study examines the influence of entry grades in mathematics and principles of accounting on students’ performance in financial accounting in Nasarawa state Colleges of Education Akwanga.  The study had eight objectives and eight null hypotheses.  Developmental research design was adopted for the study. In the test of null hypotheses, documentary records (students’ performance in financial accounting and O’L grades in accounting and mathematics) of all the 115 NCE II Business Education students in the 2011/2012 academic session were used.  Logistic regression was employed to test null hypotheses one to three, while t-test was used to test null hypotheses four to eight. All the hypotheses were tested at significance level of 0.05.  The results of the test revealed among others that entry grades in mathematics and principles of accounting have significant impact on students’ performance in financial accounting. Hence the researcher recommended that credit grades in mathematics and accounting should be emphasized as one of the entry requirements for students opting for business education in tertiary institutions in Nigeria.  This will assist to enhance students’ performance in financial accounting at tertiary institutions.     Impact Appraisal of Classroom Management (Attendance and Participation) on Performance of Business Education Students in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria

    The study investigated the impact of class attendance and participation on their academic achievement of business education students in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria. The study has five objectives and five null hypotheses were raised. Descriptive design method was adopted for the study. Two hundred and ninety (290) undergraduate students that registered and sat for Business mathematics, Principles of Business Education and Economics Analysis examinations in 2011/2012 calendar year were used for the study. Self design registers were use for marking students attendance and participations in the classroom activities while performance in the three examinations for the academic year  were used to determined students’ academic achievement. To ensure validity of the instruments, the researchers personally record and handled the two registers while board of examiners in department of vocational and technical education in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria vetted the final copy of the examination questions and the marking schemes. Staff from in the department assisted the researchers in administering the examinations, supervision and collections of the scripts. Collected scripts were marked by the researchers using the drawn marking schemes. Scores obtained in attendance, classroom participation and examinations were recorded and subjected to statistical analysis using regression for test of null hypotheses one and two while independent samples t-tests were used to test null hypotheses three, four and five. All the hypotheses were tested at significant level of 0.05. The study showed a positive significant relationship between attendance and classroom participation on academic achievement of business education students. It was recommended among others that, teachers should try to reduce boredom among students by motivating them to attend and participate in classroom activities.
