Precise measurements of CKM matrix parameters to probe the Standard Model of particle physics are a main focus of current flavour-physics experiments. Analyses of B → DD decays allow to assess higher-order Standard Model corrections in these measurements. Two decay-time-dependent measurements of CP violation in different B0 → DD decay modes are presented using data collected by the LHCb experiment. The analysis of B0 → D∗±D∓ decays utilises data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1 collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The results of the CP parameters correspond to the most precise measurement in this channel. They are consistent with the previous world average. The analysis of B0 → D+D− decays uses data corresponding to 6 fb−1 collected at 13 TeV. The analysis is ongoing and currently still blind. The evaluated sensitivities show that this will be the most precise measurement of CP violation in this channel.

Perspectives On American History: An Integrated Social Studies and English Language Arts Curriculum For Fifth Grade

    Get PDF
Social studies instruction leads to higher civic participation, like voting and volunteerism. Though the research supports high-quality social studies instruction for students of all ages, elementary social studies has taken a significant drop in instructional time over the last 20 years. This capstone uses the research of leading thinkers on social studies instruction, curriculum best practices and culturally relevant teaching to answer the question: How can I develop an integrated social studies and English language arts curriculum for fifth grade? Research shows that curriculum integration can be an effective way to deliver social studies content to elementary students. To encourage elementary teachers to do more social studies instruction in their own classrooms, the capstone project is a curriculum designed to teach early American history while also using key English language arts skills

The Role of Cadherins and Ryk on Metastasis and Invasion in Triple Negative Breast Cancer Cell Model: Hs578T/Hs578Ts(i)8

Breast cancer is a major cause of death among women in European and North American countries, even with improved methods for diagnosis and therapy. The mortality of breast cancer is mainly due to the migration of the primary tumor to distinct sites in the body and is very common in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). This type of breast cancer affects younger woman and has a high recurrence rate. Unfortunately, TNBC is extremely difficult to control because of the absence of specific targets for treatment. Therefore, our research aim is to discover new therapeutic targets and identify novel approaches for treatment of TNBC. In this study the isogenic Hs578T/Hs578Ts(i)8 cell model is used. This model consists of two cell lines: the Hs578T cells represent a primary tumor whereas the Hs578Ts(i)8 cells have undergone biochemical changes that makes it more migratory and invasive. This cell model allows studying breast cancer progression since it resembles breast cancer patients that show metastatic disease. The focus of this project is on cell-cell adhesion molecules (cadherins), and the novel receptor tyrosine kinase, Ryk, their interactions and spatiotemporal rearrangements. These molecules are studied using various techniques and methods such as behavioral assays, western blots, coimmunoprecipitation, and immunofluorescence microscopy. The results of our experiments have allowed for determining a role for N-cadherin and cadherin-11, their location, and potential connection with Ryk in invasive TNBC. In summary, this study provides novel valuable insights on the role of cadherins and Ryk in the progression of TNBC

The American Hero Redeemed in Frances Khirallah Noble's The New Belly Dancer of the Galaxy

The American hero made his literary debut as a rugged individual who exhibited courage, decency, common courtesy to others, but the antihero who lacked most basic values soon stole the stage. Although some consider Kahlil Gibran Hourani, the main character in Nobel's novel, an antihero, I argue that Kahlil, a Syrian American man who is abused by men who consider him a terrorist, suffers through the abuse perpetrated against him and emerges from his ordeal with his values intact. After escaping his captors, he embarks on a journey home to his wife, resigned to face her ire; however, during this journey, he finds the courage to stand up for the rights of others, as he does when he helps the illegal aliens being abused by their handler, and he is also still capable of treating other people with courtesy, as he does when he encounters the homeless woman in the Laundromat. Kahlil exhibits courage, empathy, simple human decency, the qualities that define a hero. He is the American hero, redeemed, no longer an antihero

New Technology for Old Models: Can Dioramas Resonate with a Modern Audience?

    Get PDF
This thesis uses visitor studies from the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) to investigate whether dioramas are still a useful, resonant tool for visitor engagement and if they do fulfill this purpose, how do they do so. The case study is the newly revamped diorama Rochester in 1838: Young Lion of the West at the RMSC. This diorama, a 70-year-old model, has been mixed with modern Virtual Reality (VR) technology to create an experience that will provide the visitor with a new perspective on an old model. As context, this thesis uses the history of the diorama to show the evolution of exhibition in museums. It also discusses the literature about how VR technology engages contemporary audiences. In addition to visitor observation and surveys, this thesis also includes insights from an interview of an artist and the restorer of the RMSC’s diorama. By comparing the artist’s intentions to visitors’ responses and lastly the museums expectations, this thesis will develop conclusions about the potential for the ongoing relevance of dioramas in museums. The visitor studies conducted for this thesis will also yield useful information to the RMSC for the development of a new VR vignette for the Rochester in 1838: Young Lion of the West diorama

It is known that polyhalogeno-nitro-1,3-butadienes are important starting materials for the synthesis of polyfunctionalized bioactive heterocycles. Novel N,S-substituted nitrobutadienes (4a-j) were synthesized from the reaction of the monothio-substituted nitrodiene derivatives (2a) and (2b) with some piperazine derivatives. These new compounds are stable and the structures of these products were characterized by spectroscopic data. The structure of the novel N,S-substituted nitrodiene compound (4g) synthesized in this study was also elucidated by single crystal x-ray analysis

Formative e-feedback in collaborative writing assignments: the effect of the process and time

    Get PDF
Writing is one of the most common activities in higher education, and is essential if we are situated in virtual learning environments based on written communication. However, the fact that it is a customary activity does not mean that it is specifically taught or that guidance is given to help students in the academic writing process (Lonka, 2003). In fact, the opposite often happens; students are already expected to know how to write in different contexts. Nevertheless, students require specific support from teachers and their peers to enable them to deal with the processes and products of academic communication. Feedback could be one type of support, seen as a joint activity which entails active interaction between students and the teacher, including how students receive and utilise the feedback (Dysthe, 2007), but not all kinds of feedback are effective. This study thus explores the impact of formative e-feedback on students' texts written collaboratively in an online learning environment and also it explores when the e-feedback takes place in a way which contributes to the inclusion of more complex arguments in academic texts. A proactive reaction by the students was caused in response to feedback. This happened when they received messages questioning their work but also suggesting changes, in addition to correction. The pattern that seems to generate quality changes in collaborative text revision processes is initiated by teacher elaboration feedback, which generates discussion among the students and, as a result, leads to contextualised changes to the text.Proposing regular feedback that requires discussion among the students turns out to be an essential strategy to encourage high quality revision of texts written collaboratively in an online learning environment
