microorganismos y lombrices rojas californianas.

Using Sensorized Gloves and Dimensional Reduction for Hand Function Assessment of Patients with Osteoarthritis
Sensorized gloves allow the measurement of all hand kinematics that are essential for
daily functionality. However, they are scarcely used by clinicians, mainly because of the difficulty of
analyzing all joint angles simultaneously. This study aims to render this analysis easier in order to
enable the applicability of the early detection of hand osteoarthritis (HOA) and the identification
of indicators of dysfunction. Dimensional reduction was used to compare kinematics (16 angles)
of HOA patients and healthy subjects while performing the tasks of the Sollerman hand function
test (SHFT). Five synergies were identified by using principal component (PC) analyses, patients
using less fingers arch, higher palm arching, and a more independent thumb abduction. The healthy
PCs, explaining 70% of patients’ data variance, were used to transform the set of angles of both
samples into five reduced variables (RVs): fingers arch, hand closure, thumb-index pinch, forced
thumb opposition, and palmar arching. Significant differences between samples were identified in
the ranges of movement of most of the RVs and in the median values of hand closure and thumb
opposition. A discriminant function for the detection of HOA, based in RVs, is provided, with a
success rate of detection higher than that of the SHFT. The temporal profiles of the RVs in two tasks
were also compared, showing their potentiality as dysfunction indicators. Finally, reducing the
number of sensors to only one sensor per synergy was explored through a linear regression, resulting
in a mean error of 7.0◦
Extrinsic effects that influence the evaluations of the judges in morpho-functional horse-shows of Spanish Purebred horses
The Spanish Purebred (PRE) horse is the most important breed in Spain due to its census, and its historical
and socio-economical importance. PRE horses are evaluated according to their sportive performance,
conformation and temperament within the Breeding Scheme of this breed.
Individuals (grouped by sex and age) are subjectively evaluated by judges in horse-shows. The aim of
this study is to ascertain the influence of environmental factors (related to the animal and the show)
influencing the scores and rankings.
Up to 8 morphological, 2 movement and 3 functional (only in 3 years-old males) traits are scored by
show-judges using a numerical scale from 1 (the worst) to 10 (the best). Here, 3 composite traits cha-racterising morphology, movement and functional performance of the individuals have been constructed
using partial scores.
The effects of the coat colour, age, sex, stud, show-horse, year of celebration, state, total number of
animals, number of judged animals and the order within age-sex group on judgements have been
tested besides some interactions between these effects.
The statistical significance of the analysed effects on the scores given by the show-judges is discussed
Complex brain circuits studied via simultaneous and permanent detection of three transported neuroanatomical tracers in the same histological section.
Experimental neuroanatomical tracing methods lie at the basis of the study of the nervous system. When the scientific question is relatively straightforward, it may be sufficient to derive satisfactory answers from experiments in which a single neuroanatomical tracing method is applied. In various scientific paradigms however, for instance when the degree of convergence of two different projections on a particular cortical area or subcortical nucleus is the subject of study, the application of single tracing methods can be either insufficient or uneconomical to solve the questions asked. In cases where chains of projections are the subjects of study, the simultaneous application of two tracing methods or even more may be compulsory. The present contribution focuses on combinations of several neuroanatomical tract-tracing strategies, enabling in the end the simultaneous, unambiguous and permanent detection of three transported markers according to a three-color paradigm. A number of combinations of three tracers or of two tracers plus the immunocytochemical detection of a neuroactive substance can be conceived; we describe several of these combinations implemented by us using the present multitracer protocol
Better adherence to the mediterranean diet could mitigate the adverse consequences of obesity on cardiovascular disease: The SUN prospective cohort
Strong observational evidence supports the association between obesity and
cardiovascular events. In elderly high-risk subjects, the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) was reported
to counteract the adverse cardiovascular effects of adiposity. Whether this same attenuation
is also present in younger subjects is not known. We prospectively examined the association
between obesity and cardiovascular clinical events (myocardial infarction, stroke or cardiovascular
death) after 10.9 years follow-up in 19,065 middle-aged men and women (average age 38 year)
according to their adherence to the MedDiet (<6 points or ¥6 points in the Trichopoulou’s
Mediterranean Diet Score). We observed 152 incident cases of cardiovascular disease (CVD). An
increased risk of CVD across categories of body mass index (BMI) was apparent if adherence to the
MedDiet was low, with multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs): 1.44 (95% confidence interval:
0.93–2.25) for ¥25 – <30 kg/m2 of BMI and 2.00 (1.04–3.83) for ¥30 kg/m2 of BMI, compared to
a BMI < 25 kg/m2. In contrast, these estimates were 0.77 (0.35–1.67) and 1.15 (0.39–3.43) with
good adherence to MedDiet. Better adherence to the MedDiet was associated with reduced CVD
events (p for trend = 0.029). Our results suggest that the MedDiet could mitigate the harmful
cardiovascular effect of overweight/obesity
