    Making More Efficient the Dissemination of the Information in the Field of Anti-Aging through Information Technology

    ICT have become extremely important because they allow everybody to participate at the Information Society, in spite of under-privileged personal or social situation. Health Education Informatics Systems (HEIS), as a method for facilitating the exchange of information between specialists, physicians and patients, or authorized organisations, become a necessary modern tool which offer quality solutions, a correct source of information and pertinent instrument for taking decisions. The members of the aging society must be motivated to have access through ICT at knowledge that can improve and prolong the active life. The dramatic demographic transformations of our century have imposed the reconsideration of the social policies and of the use of HEIS for disseminating the anti-aging information, for empowering the person regarding his own state of health, and also for the real involving of the elderly in using the Internet. AgingNice is a multidisciplinary complex system that belongs to the health informatics systems with particularization in the anti-aging domain and that allows the sharing of the knowledge concerning the specific research and the promotion of the theoretical and practical information, both among the stakeholders from the medical area and at the person level.anti-aging, elderly, ICT, health informatics systems, web services

    System controls challenges of hypersonic combined-cycle engine powered vehicles

    Hypersonic aircraft with air-breathing engines have been described as the most complex and challenging air/space vehicle designs ever attempted. This is particularly true for aircraft designed to accelerate to orbital velocities. The propulsion system for the National Aerospace Plane will be an active factor in maintaining the aircraft on course. Typically addressed are the difficulties with the aerodynamic vehicle design and development, materials limitations and propulsion performance. The propulsion control system requires equal materials limitations and propulsion performance. The propulsion control system requires equal concern. Far more important than merely a subset of propulsion performance, the propulsion control system resides at the crossroads of trajectory optimization, engine static performance, and vehicle-engine configuration optimization. To date, solutions at these crossroads are multidisciplinary and generally lag behind the broader performance issues. Just how daunting these demands will be is suggested. A somewhat simplified treatment of the behavioral characteristics of hypersonic aircraft and the issues associated with their air-breathing propulsion control system design are presented

    BaTiO3 thick fi lms obtained by tape casting from powders prepared by the oxalate route

    BaTiO3 powders were prepared by co-precipitation via oxalate route. The size, morphology and particle size distribution of the oxalate powders have been optimized by the control of different synthesis parameters during the precipitation reaction (nature of salts, concentration of different solutions, aging time). The single phase BaTiO3 oxide particles were obtained after a thermal decomposition of the as-synthesized powders at 850°C for 4 hours under air atmosphere. Oxide powders with a suitable specifi c surface area were selected in order to obtain thick fi lms by the tape casting technique. The microstructure and dielectric properties of the thick films varied obviously depending on the deposition-calcination-sintering cycle used. A double depositioncalcination cycle followed by sintering, as well as a two step deposition-calcination-sintering procedure was used in order to improve the compactness and therefore, the dielectric behaviour. A higher dielectric constant value (~ 750) and lower dielectric losses (~ 2 %) were achieved at room temperature and at 1 kHz frequency for the dense, double-deposited fi lm obtained after two deposition-calcination-sintering cycles. For this film, a superior value of the dielectric constant (~ 1100), almost frequency independent in the frequency range of 100 Hz – 10 kHz was gained also at the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition temperature of 130°C

    Synthesis of a parallel data stream processor from data flow process networks

    In this talk, we address the problem of synthesizing Process Network specifications to FPGA execution platforms. The process networks we consider are special cases of Kahn Process Networks. We call them COMPAAN Data Flow Process Networks (CDFPN) because they are provided by a translator called the COMPAAN compiler that automatically translates affine nested loop programs to input-output equivalent (COMPAAN) process network specifications. The objective is to provide an effective and efficient implementation of CDFPNs in an FPGA execution platform, where our implementation is close to a one-to-one mapping of the originating CDFPN.     As habitat loss poses challenge to conservation, it is becoming increasingly important to address questions about the extent to which connectivity between habitat patches is changing, and how this affects the local population of different species in these patches. The objective of our research was to monitor ponds and the pond-breeding amphibian species in a protected area. Therefore, we conducted day and night surveys, and compare the data collected in 2022 with the results of the latest available survey (2019), to simulate the patch occupancy of amphibian species over a 25-year timeframe. We found that combining the species occupancy data collected from both day and night surveys lead to higher patch occupancy values and higher number of registered individuals, compared to data collected only during daytime. The number of ponds decreased from 2019 to 2022, and further habitat loss could result in the disappearance of the local population if the area continues to dry out. Climate and landscape change could be major contributors to habitat loss in the future, therefore, in order to ensure the persistence of these local populations, we recommend the development of climate and habitat scenarios, and the planning of conservation measures based on these scenarios

    Impact of thoracoabdominal imaging on diagnosis and management in patients with suspected infective endocarditis.

    Embolic events (EEs) are a common complication of infective endocarditis (IE) and their presence can impact diagnosis and modify the therapeutic plan. The present study aimed to describe the role of thoracoabdominal imaging, either thoracoabdominal-pelvic Computed Tomography or <sup>18</sup> F-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography, on diagnosis and management of patients with suspected IE. This study was conducted at a university hospital, from January 2014 to June 2022. EEs and IE were defined according to modified Duke criteria. Among 966 episodes with suspected IE and thoracoabdominal imaging, 528 (55%) patients were asymptomatic. At least one EE was found in 205 (21%) episodes. Based on thoracoabdominal imaging findings, the diagnosis was reclassified from rejected to possible or from possible to definite IE in 6 (1%) and 10 (1%) episodes, respectively. Among the 413 patients with IE, at least one EE was found on thoracoabdominal imaging in 143 (35%) episodes. Together with the presence of left-side valvular vegetation >10 mm, the results of thoracoabdominal imaging established a surgical indication (prevention of embolism) in 15 (4%) episodes, 7 of which were asymptomatic. Thoracoabdominal imaging performed in asymptomatic patients with suspected IE improved the diagnosis in only a small proportion of patients. Thoracoabdominal imaging led to a new surgical indication (in association with left-side valvular vegetation >10 mm) in only a small percentage of patients

    Do quantitative and qualitative shear wave elastography have a role in evaluating musculoskeletal soft tissue masses?

    Objectives: To determine if quantitative and qualitative shear wave elastography have roles in evaluating musculoskeletal masses. Methods: 105 consecutive patients, prospectively referred for biopsy within a specialist sarcoma centre, underwent B-mode, quantitative (m/s) and qualitative (colour map) shear wave elastography. Reference was histology from subsequent biopsy or excision where possible. Statistical modelling was performed to test elastography data and/or B-mode imaging in predicting malignancy. Results: Of 105 masses, 39 were malignant and 6 had no histology but benign characteristics at 12 months. Radiologist agreement for B-mode and elastography was moderate to excellent Kw 0.52-0.64; PABAKw 0.85-0.90). B-Mode imaging had 78.8% specificity, 76.9% sensitivity for malignancy. Quantitatively, adjusting for age, B-mode and lesion volume there was no statistically significant association between longitudinal velocity and malignancy (OR [95% CI] 0.40[0.10, 1.60], p=0.193), but some evidence that higher transverse velocity was associated with decreased odds of malignancy (0.28[0.06, 1.28], p=0.101). Qualitatively malignant masses tended to be towards the blue spectrum (lower velocities); 39.5% (17/43) of predominantly blue masses were malignant, compared to 14.3% (1/7) of red lesions. Conclusions: Quantitatively and qualitatively there is no statistically significant association between shear wave velocity and malignancy. There is no clear additional role to B-mode imaging currently.     Reproducibility of shear wave elastography measuresof the Achilles tendon.

    OBJECTIVE To assess the reproducibility of shear wave elastography (SWE) measures in the Achilles tendon (AT) in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS Shear wave velocity (SWV) of 14 healthy volunteers [7 males, 7 females; mean age 26.5 ± 3.8 years, mean height 171.6 ± 10.9 cm, mean Victorian Institute of Sports Assessment Achilles questionnaire (VISA-A) score 99.4 ± 1.2] was measured with the foot relaxed and fixed at 90°. Data were collected over five consecutive measures and 5 consecutive days. RESULTS Mean SWV values ranged from 7.91 m/s-9.56 m/s ± 0.27-0.50 m/s. Coefficient of variation (CV), correlations and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) scores ranged from 2.9%-6.3%, 0.4-0.7 and 0.54-0.85 respectively. No significant differences were noted for longitudinal or transverse data with respect to protocol or time and no significant differences were noted for foot position in transverse data. Significant differences in SWV values were noted between foot positions for longitudinal scanning (p = <0.05), with a relaxed foot position providing SWV values on average 0.47 m/s faster than a fixed position. Increased reproducibility was obtained with the foot relaxed. ICC between operators was 0.70 for transverse and 0.80 for longitudinal scanning. CONCLUSIONS Reproducible SWE measures were obtained over a 1-h period as well as a period of 5 consecutive days with more reliable measures obtained from a longitudinal plane using a relaxed foot position. SWE also has a high level of agreement between operators making SWE a reproducible technique for quantitatively assessing the mechanical properties of the human AT in vivo
