Testing an Optimised Expansion on Z_2 Lattice Models

We test an optimised hopping parameter expansion on various Z_2 lattice scalar field models: the Ising model, a spin-one model and lambda (phi)^4. We do this by studying the critical indices for a variety of optimisation criteria, in a range of dimensions and with various trial actions. We work up to seventh order, thus going well beyond previous studies. We demonstrate how to use numerical methods to generate the high order diagrams and their corresponding expressions. These are then used to calculate results numerically and, in the case of the Ising model, we obtain some analytic results. We highlight problems with several optimisation schemes and show for the best scheme that the critical exponents are consistent with mean field results to at least 8 significant figures. We conclude that in its present form, such optimised lattice expansions do not seem to be capturing the non-perturbative infra-red physics near the critical points of scalar models.Comment: 47 pages, some figures in colour but will display fine in B

This report aims to describe the process and effects of a Community Music Therapy intervention in a residential setting in Lisbon, Portugal for unaccompanied refugee children and adolescents. During the process of relocation refugees pass through a diverse range of traumatic experiences which can have a detrimental effect on their well-being and negatively affect their mental health. The overall purpose of the intervention was to create a sense of community and belonging and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Music represents our cultural identity and provides an alternative channel for expressing emotions and communication in a multilingual environment. A sample of 35 residents (ages 11-20) and 8 members of staff from 17 different countries participated in the intervention. Sessions were open group or individual consisting mostly of active music techniques; improvisation, learning repertoire, song writing and recording as well as receptive techniques; music listening and discussion and art activities such as painting. An initial evaluation was carried out with each participant (resident) and a questionnaire at the end of the internship. Negative behaviours were reduced, and results of the questionnaire revealed that participating in music therapy reduced negative feelings (sadness, anger, depression, frustration, stress) by 25%. Community music therapy is a suitable intervention in this setting. Future interventions would benefit from a development of monthly projects, working with residents further along their acculturation process and more detailed research on the music and views of mental health of the cultures present in CACR

The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of e-content based coaching on selected fundamental skills in Field Hockey. To achieve the purpose of this study 30 male under graduate students from Meenatchi Ramasamy group of institutions, Thathanur, Tamilnadu, India were selected as subjects and their age ranged between 17 and 20 years. The study was formulated as a true random group design, consisting of a pre-test and post-test. The subjects were randomly assigned to two equal groups of fifteen each and named as Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’. Group ‘A’ underwent teaching & coaching with e-content package and Group ‘B’ undergone teaching & coaching without e-content package. The teaching & coaching with e-content group were shown the content developed electronically by the investigators and the other group was given teaching & coaching only in the field. Both the groups undergone respective schedule for six weeks on alternate days. Teaching & coaching session in the field lasted for 60 minutes and e-content schedule was meted out for 20 minutes. The fundamental skills namely straight hit, wrong foot hit, straight push, wrong foot push, straight flick, wrong foot flick and scoop in Hockey were selected as variables. The subjective rating was done by three qualified coaches on each skill selected in this study. The rating was done on 10 points scale by each coach and average on each skill was taken as individual score. Analysis of covariance was used, where the final means were adjusted for differences in the initial means, and the adjusted means were tested for significance. From the analysis of data it was found that the teaching & coaching combined with e-content package group showed significant improvement on all selected fundamental skills in Field Hockey

In this thesis the effect of gamma radiation on mould was studied. Mould is an ubiquitous microorganism and one of the most common coloniser and cause of deterioration of objects of cultural heritage and arts. Highly successful and safe prevention of further degradation of aforementioned objects can be done using gamma radiation. Painting canvas samples used in this research were divided in two groups and irradiated in the Radiation chemistry and dosimetry laboratory at Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb. Radiation doses of 2, 7, 20 and 50 kGy we used at 2 different speeds (0,1 i 9,8 Gy s-1 ) followed by monitoring of mould recovery at days 0., 7., 14. and 28. The most frequently found mould on canvases were those of genus Penicillium spp., Cladosporium spp., Aspergillus spp. and white mould and yeast. Higher radiation speed (9,8 Gy s-1) was shown to be more effective in reducing mould concentration in both groups and at all radiation doses. Absorption dose of 7 kGy at the speed of 9,8 Gy s-1 was found to be the best choice, based on literature sources on safety of gamma radiation on cellulose materials and better antifungal effect, observed especially in samples incubated at a higher humidity. Cladosporium spp., white mould and yeast exhibited the highest resistance to radiation. Cladosporium spp. resistance can be attributed to pigment melanin found in its mycelium. Further research using molecular biology methods is needed to elucidate the mechanisms of white mould and yeast resistance

An open source LoRa based vehicle tracking system

    Get PDF
This work describes an open source tracking system that determines the location and speed of a vehicle in real-time. The system was inspired by the need to track tourist boats in UNESCO Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, Malaysia. Boats that travel too fast generate wakes that are suspected to cause ecological damage. In this work, geolocation information is provided by Arduino based transponders with Global Positioning System (GPS). Transponders periodically transmit location and speed data using LoRa through a gateway to a cloud server. On the server, open source software components implement a Geographical Information System (GIS) to manage the location and speed data for display and further analysis. The resulting prototype performed the required functions as expected
