From Cultural Studies to Cultural Research: Engaged Scholarship in the Twenty-first Century

    Get PDF
Is, or should cultural studies be, a discipline or not? What exactly is its object? Should cultural studies be focused on influencing policy or be an agent of critique? What is the role of theory? What kind of theory? Should textual analysis or ethnography predominate? The regular reiteration of such questions reveals an ongoing sense of crisis, a general apprehensiveness over the question whether cultural studies is able to live up to its own self-declared aspirations, both intellectually and politically

Measuring service life and evaluating the quality of solid tires

    Get PDF
The objective of this research is to propose procedures for measuring service life and evaluating the quality of locallymade and used solid tires in Thailand. The solid tires were stressed and rotated until blowout on a drum-like test apparatuswhich is designed, constructed by the authors and equipped with laboratory instrumentation. Solid tires from five differentmanufacturers were selected for testing. We measured service life, length of time to tire failure, at three different loadingamplitudes and three different speeds on the testing drum. The service life of all specimens was studied and compared todetermine the possibility of using service life to evaluate the quality of a solid tire

Social climate on alcohol in Rotterdam, The Netherlands: public opinion on drinking behaviour and alcohol control measures

    Get PDF
Research was undertaken regarding the Dutch climate on alcohol in 1994 and results were compared with earlier findings. It was found that the social climate on alcohol in The Netherlands can be characterized by 'moderation'. Over the years, drinking without problems has become more acceptable (and is even encouraged at times) whereas excessive drinking and consequent problems still meet strong disapproval. Opinions concerning alcohol control measures mirror this attitude. Measures such as the restriction of drinking in public places and raising the age limits are endorsed by the public. However, more people are now against restrictions on the general availability of alcohol. Although drink-driving has decreased over the years, its prevalence is still high, especially among those who are most at risk

    Asian Australian Writing

This special issue of the Journal of Postcolonial Writing, the result of a collaboration with the South Asian Diaspora International Research Network (SADIRN) at Monash University, Australia, engages with Asian Australian writing, a phenomenon that has been staking out a place in the Australian literary landscape since the 1950s and 1960s. It has now burgeoned into an influential area of cultural production, known for its ethnic diversity and stylistic innovativeness and demanding new forms of critical engagement involving transnational and transcultural frameworks. As Wenche Ommundsen and Huang Zhong point out in their article in this issue, the very term “Asian Australian” signals a heterogeneity that rivals that of the dominant Anglo Australian culture; just as white Australian writing displays the lineaments of its complex European heritage, so hybridised works by multicultural writers from mainland China, Vietnam, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Singapore and Malaysia can be read in terms of their specific national, ethnic, linguistic and cultural traditions. Nevertheless, this category’s primary location within the space of the host or Australian nation has determined its reception and interpretation. Marked by controversial representations of historical and present-day encounters with white Australian culture, debates on alterity, representational inequality, and consciousness of its minority status, Asian Australian writing has become a force field of critical enquiry in its own right (Ommundsen 2012, 2)

Analysis of comet rotation through modeling of features in the coma

    Get PDF
An integral field unit fiber array spectrograph was used to observe the emission spectra of radical species (C2, C3, CH, CN, and NH2) in multiple comets. The resultant azimuthal and radial division maps produced from the reduced data provide a unique method of analyzing features with these radicals in the comae, as well as how they behave over time. A Monte Carlo model was developed in order to simulate the behavior of particles from the outer nucleus and coma of each comet depending on various parameters including rotational period, outflow velocity, and active area location. The results from the model were used to constrain the physical parameters of three comets: 10P/Tempel 2, C/2009 P1 (Garradd), and 168P/Hergenrother

Spatial distribution of PAH concentrations and stable isotope signatures (δ13C, δ15N) in mosses from three European areas – Characterization by multivariate analysis

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations and N, C stable isotope signatures were determined in mosses Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. from 61 sites of 3 European regions: Île-de-France (France); Navarra (Spain); the Swiss Plateau and Basel area (Switzerland). Total PAH concentrations of 100-700 ng g-1, as well as δ13C values of -32 to -29‰ and δ15N values of -11 to -3‰ were measured. Pearson correlation tests revealed opposite trends between high molecular weight PAH (4-6 aromatic rings) content and δ13C values. Partial Least Square regressions explained the very significant correlations (r > 0.91, p < 0.001) between high molecular weight PAH concentrations by local urban land use (<10 km) and environmental factors such as elevation and pluviometry. Finally, specific correlations between heavy metal and PAH concentrations were attributed to industrial emissions in Switzerland and road traffic emissions in Spain

The concept of humanistic theory emphasizes an optimistic perspective on human nature rather than viewing humans as humans who have no abilities or are like a blank slate to be filled. This theory focuses on the human ability to think consciously and rationally in controlling his biological desires, as well as developing his various potentials. In a humanistic view, humans are responsible for their lives and actions and have the freedom and ability to change their attitudes and behavior. For this reason, it is necessary to develop a fun, innovative and creative learning process. Including efforts to develop learning processes based on learning theories in this case humanistic theories by building learning processes that are in accordance with the wishes of students and lifelong developing learning skills. This study aims to analyze the application of humanistic education as an icon of curriculum management at junior high school Al Amiriyyah. Data analysis in this study used interactive analysis of 3 models and This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive type in which data is obtained from interviews, observation and analysis of data. The results of the analysis of the humanistic approach as an icon of curriculum management at junior high school Al Amiriyyah are that strategies, methods, and teacher behavior are very important in implementing the concept of humanistic learning for students
